I took a class in college called, Africology taught by a Black man. One class he spent the duration going over Black myths and folklore and discussed how many of the Disney adapted fairytales were taken from Black folklore. Suggest giving it a search! There’s the age-old African mermaid legend known as Mami Wata (Mother Water) & a book called The Annotated African American Folktales by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Maria Tatar that talks all about them!

Actually, mermaid stories originated in Assyria, ancient asian country. Lots of different countries throughtout history had mermaid stories and mythology, I don't think Disney adapted any specific myth from specific part of the world, they just based it on Hans Christian Andersens story.

Fun fact. Hans Christian Anderson was gay and the little mermaid was a analogy about his feelings for another man that weren’t reciprocated. (Knowing that make the story even more beautiful and tragic for me)

I think this fact connects to mermaids being used as metaphors for minorities and the oppressed. In The Deep mermaids are the children of female slaves, in other mythologies they are the souls of women wronged at sea, and even in the original Little Mermaid uses these themes.

That's not true though. I talked about Hans Christian Andersen in Queer Studies. The theory is based on a very homophobic text from a literature theorist. He said that Andersen MUST be gay, because he behaved "female", too affectionate to be a real man, and wrote about a creature that is only half human (as are gays according to him)..... So, sorry to burst your bubble here. 😅

@@lisaglaum8912 I haven't studied him in academics or read the text you're referring to, but I randomly read a few articles on HCA a few months ago when they were planning a tribute to him at Pride in Denmark. Seems like most scholars of him at this point agree he was bi-romantic, and possibly asexual... articles I read quoted from his own letters, including a letter he sent to his male friend Collin that read "I long for you, yes, this moment I long for you as if you were a lovely girl…" so I dunno if that's the only source of that theory.

Here I am only 12 minutes in bc fairytale and myths are my JAM and I have to Little Mermaid history for everyone. Disney version spoilers if you mind that.
The myth of the little mermaid didn't really originate with Anderson. There have, obviously, been siren stories for a very long time but one of the oldest "mermaid goes on land" stories is that of Melusina. River spirit (mermaid) falls in love with a knight, comes on land to marry him and hides the fact that she grows a tail in water, in the end she is either driven out or leaves him to return to the water with her daughters.
Andersons The Little Mermaid is.... A bit rough. It's not what a lot of people think it's going to be but I actually love it as a view on how a male author of the time depicts what he believes a woman/girl would go through for love. Disney's version is amazing though. Lots of good conversations about trafficking (Ursula manipulating a literal child), what society does to young girls (ie: making them give up their voices to achieve their dreams). Also it has a happy ending in which Ariel has autonomy over her body and choices after turning her back on the magic that was only hurting her. Love it. Very good.
Lots of people shit all over Little mermaid fairytales because they view a mermaid leaving the ocean "for a man" a a bad thing but if it were a human becoming a mermaid for love and adventure it would be just fine so I call bullshit.

This is what I’ve been told about Han’s Christian Anderson’s story. Hans Christian Anderson fell in love with another man, and when that man told him, ‘No, we can be friends.’ Then when Anderson’s friend was married, he wrote a story about a mermaid, because he couldn’t even mourn the loss of his love, because a mermaid can’t produce tears in the ocean. Also why there’s so many religious motifs, because he was trying to deny who he was, and coming to terms with himself

Sirens originate from Greek mythology, they’re different from mermaids. Originally they’re half woman, half vulture/bird like cannibals that lured sailors in with their voices and song, and their song would tell of the sailor’s deepest wishes to lure them and eat them. In recent years sirens have been merged with mermaids and people think they’re one and the same, but they’re not. Mermaids are just half fish half human creatures, and they also appear in Greek mythology (Poseidon’s son was a merman Triton but he had two fish tails instead of one, and in a lot of folk lore and legends mermaids are depicted with two tails (hence the Starbucks logo having two tails))

    • @idek7438
      @idek7438 Před 3 lety +1

Sirens also make a famous appearance in the Odyssey where basically Odysseus and his crew during their travels must pass through a siren-infested area. So Odysseus plugs his men's ears with wax so they can continue piloting the ship to safety without hearing the sirens' song, while Odysseus himself orders his men to tie him to the ship's mast so he can hear their song (because he is extremely curious and wants to find out what their song is like).

I finished A Song Below Water a few days ago, and I actually really struggled with it. I think the fact that it was so contemporary with this dash of fantasy sprinkled throughout made the fantasy aspect almost seem redundant. I understand that the author uses the fantasy in the book to create a metaphor for real world issues. But when the book already discusses the same real world issues that it also created a metaphor for, for me, it left me kinda scratching my head a little bit. Then there’s the writing style of the book. Which I was I wasn’t crazy about. I know it’s from 2 teenagers perspectives, but the ending of sentences like, “I didn’t know what to do, but.” It drove me a little crazy. Maybe that’s the grammar nerd in me totally coming out, but for me, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hoped. BUT I’m happy that you did like it!! And I enjoyed hearing about the things you liked about it! Crazy to me how we can all experience the same book differently!

To me mermaids and sirens are one in the same because of how they're portrayed. I am sure there's a difference, but I know Sirens are from Greek mythology so if anyone is interested look there or read The Odyssey since they are mentioned in that book. Also, Disney of course did a little reimagining on the original Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson to make a profitable movie which I do love Ariel, but Belle will always be my favorite. I was shocked when reading the original years ago, it was like reading all of Grimm's Fairytales and having my childhood ripped away...lol...now I kind of like the darker side because life isn't always sunshine and rainbows there has to be darkness before there's light.
If anyone likes the Disney version of Little Mermaid there's a book called Part of Your World and it's a twist on this tale. I am partly through it and starting to see some action in it. It's multi perspective, but it tells you that this is Ariel's chapter, Eric's, even Scuttle. It's interesting and am looking forward on how this plays out.
I am going to look into that last book Into the Drowning Deep, you made it sound intriguing and I like sciencey stuff. I totally understand the water baby thing, to me not only do you love the water, you may be a natural at swimming, and it's soothing to be by and to listen to. It doesn't even have to be the waves of a beach it could even be rain or water rushing by in a creek or brook. It's just something that aligns you, if you know what I mean.
By the way I love your hair color, I need my hair that red.

Would be interested to know if you felt like it could've been more of a selection of short stories about the different mermaids in the past before Yetu? I suppose that in the past, there was little room for error, lest your child gets put in serious danger, so fairytales were intended to frighten just as much as educate. I suppose that Hans Christian Andersen wished to stay true to these motifs.

I'm going to FINALLY be picking up Into the Drowning Deep with a book club in September, so it was cool to hear your thoughts on it. I agree with what you said about horror. I'm constantly on the hunt for a GOOD SCARY horror book, but none of them ever hit right like a movie does.

I have a recommendation for you that I think you'll like! (even tho it includes "celebrities") It's The Roommate Arrangement by Jae and it's about a female comedian who is trying to make it big and an ex-officer who is recovering from some trauma (it's wlw) and they have to pretend to be dating to become roommates. It's really cute and funny and even tho I haven't finished it I already love it!

This got me so excited for Into the Drowning Deep! I never really knew what it was that appeals to me in horror most, but you've made me come to realize that it is creature horror (even though you did so through mentioning that you don't like that :p). I recently fell down a hole of deep sea creature youtube videos and marine biology things + myth/sea monsters, so would LOVE to pick up Into the Drowning Deep.

  • @cecilygriffis6508

sirens came from greek myth along with hippocampi or seahorses. mermaids i believe were also from greek myth but i'm a floridian and i was always told that manatees which are native to florida were mistaken by ship's crews for voluptuous women with tails and that's how mermaids came to be a thing in florida. but yeah sirens came from greek mythology so that would be something to look into. a lot of the fantasy creatures today have a base in greek and roman myth

OVER THE WOODWARD WALL!!!!!!! I can’t wait to read that!!! Also, I’m so interested in The Deep and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read A Song Below Water but now I really think I do! I haven’t read Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, but I have read the novella Rolling in the Deep which I guess is the prequel and that was intense and short and could have been a cool mini series on TV or something.

Ooo definitely read Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz for a creepy, kind of horrific version of mermaids but in a real life setting? I love HM’s writing and her books are so raw and beautiful and in YA I don’t think we get that very often. Highly recommend her books!

ok so idk if you‘d enjoy it but there‘s a ocean-y/ environmental thriller called „the swarm“ (its from a german author, frank schätzing) and it has themes of climate change, polluting oceans, and a lot of weird stuff
it‘s for sure an interesting read and might be worth a try (maybe also if you‘re interested in reading more translated works)

It's so wild to me that North Americans most of the time only know the Disney versions of fairytales, cause as a European or at least as part of the German speaking countries you grow up with fairytales, especially with the original, more gruesome versions of the Brothers Grimm fairytales but also with the stories from Hans Christian Andersen. It makes sense since these stories primarily come from Germany and Denmark, so it's natural to tell your children the local children stories, and I have no idea about American childrens classics such as the secret garden, Anne of Green Gables (I hope that's what it's called) etc. But still, the fact that these stories were popularised by Disney and so the rest of the world knows these versions and therefore are shocked at how different and gory the original stories are is always so funny to me cause I have grown up on them.

I haven’t read any of these but they are on my TBR. I have read Coral by Sara Ella which is like A Song Below Water, if I go of from the way you described it. It is a contemporary mixed with mermaids and deals with heavy topic. But I would give a trigger warning for self harm, (attempted) suïcide and parental abandonment.

i had a song below water on my tbr already but now hearing your thoughts i’m even more excited for it. i thought it was just a fantasy too and maybe that’s what people were expecting and why they gave it a lower rating. the fact that it isn’t pure fantasy makes me think i’ll like it more than i would if it was. plus you mentioned renaissance festival and now i want to pick it up right this second lmao.
