    I have a collection of old 2600 consoles and carts, but this is an easy way to get HDMI and 7800 capability. I've been playing with my new 2600+ for a few days now and I'm really pleased with it.

    Recently helped my uncle dump all his roms onto a SD card my gift to him, around 800 plus homebrews. Stuck an emulator on his phone and hook that to a tv. He happy as a clam. I’m glad to make him happy and easy access to his collection.

    I picked up the system, all the new games, all the things! And picked up a dozen of my old favorites. I did not have a box of games, had to go find my favorites. So a box of games in the attic was not required as I found it fun hunting down my old favorites. Nostalgia level set to HIGH!

    I recently dump my rom collection on a SD card too. I volunteer at a hospice and I hooked up a usb dongle to their tv loaded with any game imaginable and we have Friday nite game fun time. Great for physical therapy.

    Pre-ordered just as it went live. Shipping second week of December supposedly. Ordered one from Amazon. Had a bag full of games. Got them
    Before the prices spiked. Not happy with Atari about the shipping screw up. Wish they had the option of buying a 7800 stick too. Enjoyed the video liked and subscribed. Played this at a friends when I was a kid every morning before school. Nostalgia for me. If you don’t get it don’t get it. Let the rest of us oldsters enjoy it.

    There is a new product called the "Mega 7800" that is a controller adapter that lets you use either a Sega Master System controller or a Sega Genesis/Megadrive controller on the 7800. Currently on the initial firmware. 1.0.0, the Mega 7800 does work on the 2600+ but it reverses the button inputs on the SMS and duplicates the buttons on the Megadrive controller. It's all odd stuff that should be worked out in future firmware updates.

    I got my 2600+ on Friday. The big advantage to this system over Stella on a PC is that you can use the original paddle, driving, and Trak Ball controllers for the games that require or support it. Playing Kaboom or Breakout with joysticks STINKS. I probably have a dozen original 2600s, three or four 5200s, and four or five 7800s, but connecting them to a modern TV to play is less than ideal, and this fits the bill - especially for paddle controller games. The first thing we played was Warlords, which is a great game for four players using paddles. I'll be having an inventory reduction sale on eBay soon! (edit) I also own somewhere around 400-500 carts, so this system was VERY INEXPENSIVE in my opinion.

    Thank you for adding the information about the genesis and master system controllers. I have been asking around about that and have not gotten an answer yet. It’s really too bad as the master system controllers would’ve been awesome for 7800 games especially for those of us who don’t own any 7800 hardware.

      One viewer wrote in to say that a Hyperkin Sega compatible controller did work so I wonder if the older controllers draw a little too much power vs. some of the newer compatible ones.

    I have yet to see anybody check to see if a 7800 controller works on it. Atari not offering an option is weird to me since they made it compatible with 7800 games? Some 7800 games require a 2 button controller.

    Hello Lon, I was recently gifted the Atari gamestation pro. Hoping you would do a video on this and perhaps a comparison between the two systems. Thanks. 👍

  • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

    I'm not sure Gen-X people will want the 2600+ because they know a CRT display looks superior for these kind of old games, that there is lag in the paddle controllers, that there is a huge homebrew community of games that won't work with it, that there are some good original games that don't work with it, and that the included joystick is stiff and doesn't work as well as the original CX-40.
    I doubt there are many Boomers playing Atari 2600 games. I think it was more of a Gen-X thing. I'm one of the oldest people still appreciating the old Atari now in my mid 50s, and I'm not a Boomer. Are there many 60+ playing the Atari? I doubt it.

    I'm still on the fence with the Atari 2600+... The better deal is the recently released Atari Game Station Pro. Retail price is $99 and $79 at my local Costco. The Atari GSP comes with two wireless controllers and 200 games built in. The best part is the micro-sd card slot to side-load practically any 2600, 5200, 7800, NES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy (inlcuding GBA), MAME Arcade with bezel artwork, and many more with HDMI. And it even has save-states for arcade high scores and any NES/Genesis games that had battery backup for saving files. And to top it off, one can use a PS4/PS5/Xbox Series X controllers via usb-c cable. Value wise the Atari 2600+ cannot hold a candle to this beast of a machine! Just my two cents worth. Now, have you played Atari today? 🙂

    • @tornadotj2059
      @tornadotj2059 Před 9 měsíci

      But you can't play Kaboom on the GSP with the correct paddle controllers, not even the "paddle" controls built into the ones it comes with. When you load the ROM, it forces you to use joysticks. No thanks.

  • @foxglove9
    @foxglove9 Před 9 měsíci +1

    I practically had to give the last of my Atari 2600 games away a few years ago since they were barely even worth $1 a cart. You can fit the entire collection and more on the smallest MicroSD card on the market right now. It's crazy they are requiring carts to be able to use the console. Though I think it's cool there is a cart slot for anyone who might still have some in a shoe box somewhere.
    The console runs the Stella emulator which is great, so you should see better compatibility with home-brews and 7800 games in the future. It's also too bad the Supercharger does not work with it, but I get why. When someone figures out how to load my rom collection I'll probably pick one up to replace my old Flashback. I really like how close it is to the original and it'll be nice to have a set of working paddles again.

    I'm curious if it actually reads the data off the cart. As in whether it plays the code that is on the cart itself. If I wanted to go via the path of least resistance, I'd just load all of the available Atari game roms onto some board mounted flash and find a way to detect what cartridge is inserted.
