    Being a big Atari fan, i bought one of these with the Paddle pack and the Beserk and Mr jump and go cartridges. Also played games from my original light sixer console. i love this console.

    The original four-switch units had joystick ports that were angled up. Maybe since they went with a four-switch motif they wanted to copy that aspect as well.

    The original woody four switcher had this exact port/joystick layout. So their recreation is spot on and accurate except the size of the unit of course.

    @tonyfishlock7240 Před 7 měsíci +2

    A couple things i though i'd mention, the ports on the back are the same angle and mostly positioning as the original 4 switch 2600 and the other thing is you don't have to turn the 2600 plus off when changing cartridges, hot swapping is encouraged
    Cheers 👍🏻

      Yeah, other people have made the same points. A I said in the video I don't have a 4 switch Woody so couldn't directly compare, but they are bloody annoying! I know you can hot swap, but old habits are hard to lose!

    Great review. You have an amazing 2600/7800 collection. I love everything about the 2600+. The controllers are even nice and have two of them. I have the Berzerk enhanced. I'm tempted to get Mr Run and Jump, but will do further research on it. My WICO trackball even works great with this system.

    The firmware updates are still available in the AtariAge forums. There's now also a newer beta with more fixes. It's pinned right at the top of the 2600+ section.

    Great video, I appreciate the criticisms as well as the praises. I do agree that the pack-in games could be better, but Yars' Revenge is my all-time 2600 favorite, and I'd use this mainly to play old cartridges, anyway. Kudos for the shots of that very large Atari cart collection, very nice!
    For 7800 games, I'd just use a Sega Genesis joypad. I wouldn't touch those 7800 controllers if my life depended on it. My hands are still cramping from the beating they took from those stupid things 35 years ago, hah.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Genesis joypads won't work for 7800 games, they aren't compatible with the 7800's unique 2 button set-up. The 7800 joypads, which I use, are great, the Proline joysticks are terrible though. Atari have made new versions of the joypads now too, which you can buy from their website.

    With the availability of MAME, it would seem pointless to me to include an arcade port limited by the 2600's capabilities, when the original ROMs can be played in full fidelity in a variety of formats (PCs, consoles, handhelds). Surround is a classic -- possibly in the top four (along with Combat, Air-Sea Battle, and Canyon Bomber) of pre-Space Invaders games.

    You asked why Centipede and other Atari games such as Asteroids or Crystal Castles aren't included on the 'free' 10-in-1 cart.
    It's simple; they want to hold some of their most popular games back so they can sell those separately, similar to Berzerk Enhanced.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, but as I said elsewhere they did runs of those games as part of the XP program already, I could understand not including ones they have yet to republish but not ones they already have.

    The one thing that separates it from past mini console replicas is the fact that you can play games from alternative sources as default. Other than that though, this is still little more than a nostalgia cash cow that will likely see itself being stored in a cupboard once the initial excitement has worn off. Soon to be seen at a charity shop near you. I don't see the problem with a sleeve as it reduces cost and it likely kinder to the planet. Treat it well and it will retain it's integrity.

    Disappointing product, poorly designed, that makes no sense because it fills a hole that does not exist. People who want to have the original, will buy an original and refurbish it or whatever. Otherwise, just emulate.
    Made by a company that is in no way related to the original Atari other than it having bought and taken over the name for marketing reasons.
    Cheap landfill-fodder.

    • @Meebzorp5200

      Agreed for this and other reasons - the Retron already exists for half the price. The included cart is ridiculous - 10 games, most of which won't get played more than once and with dipswitches? Really? No soft menu? No way to purchase more games from a store. The last Flashback had 75 games. No reason for this product to exist other than it has the Atari name.

  • @Meebzorp5200
    @Meebzorp5200 Před 7 měsíci

    Don't take this the wrong way as I appreciate your sincerity in not pumping and dumping a video about this and giving it a more thorough review. But there's no reason for this thing to exist. The Retron is out there for half the price, the included cart is a joke - dipswitches with 10 games, most of which will not get played. Dipswitches in this era? Is it 1997? No soft menu? Nowhere to buy more games. The last Flashback had 75 games. Now there is shrinkflation with videogames?
    The average consumer buying this will no doubt feel ripped off. Most are not going to fleas and thrifts to find stacks of cartridges as those finds aren't out there any longer. And if they are, they are overpriced. There's no need for this to cater to the hardcore collectors such as ourselves as there are countless multicarts, goteks, mods, upgrades and so on for each system. And like I said, the Retron exists so that takes away the major selling point of the 2600+: connecting to a modern TV over HDMI.
    I just don't understand this product. I think in today's age, we need to be making less "tat" (as the Brits say) because it is just ewaste.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 7 měsíci +4

      The Retron is not an official product and its really ugly, not to mention the fact it doesn't play 7800 games, just 2600. This is very much aimed at the Atari fan and collector, so if you aren't one of those I can understand why you might not find it appealing.
