I was legitimately scared. Then I realized it was satire.
He had us in the first quarter, not gonna lie.
same 😂
I thought something was off when I noticed his hairstyle was unchanged for 20+ years....
Bro same
this is 100% legit, what are you talking about
2019 - Wizards of the Coast are so bad they can't even kill off Magic: The Gathering, and that just killed off Magic: The Gathering!
It's five colors, so doesn't die to Doom Blade.
So true. Is this satire on Mtg purple, unsleeved media and alpha investments. They are always wrong hahhaa
There's a paradox somewhere in there...
@@tavitalvensaari6355 No, it was banned...which is what actually killed magic the gathering.
You sound like desolatormagic.
2005: "Kamigawa killed Magic!"
6 year old me thinking my snake tribal deck is the bee's knees: "He's got FOUR SWORDS!!!"
Sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple, sneeple!
me at 32 looking at my kamigawa snake deck: he DOES have 4 swords. sweet!
I did quit magic then, but I was going to college and there were no stores and no one played. I didn’t like kamigawa either. And I had no disposable income. Haha.
I quit the game at the time kamigawa was in print, basically like the dude above my comment, just to start playing at theros beyond death release again.
They still have a lot of swords, and there's mechs!
"Yeah, these new planeswalker cards are going to ruin the game."
They haven't yet, but that hasn't stopped Teferi from trying.
And now we have oko...
And oko
@Lawman Yes. The new core set is based on him.
Well, they haven’t ruined it financially, anyway. Artistically-that’s another question.
Honestly the planeswalker meta is pretty cancer and has kept me and I'm sure many others from bothering with new set seeking. I'll just wait for the meta to change I guess
MtG in 2040: “Seventh strike, protection from chartreuse. When this creature dies, add your library to your mana pool”.
@Proton yeah same
@Proton Is that like Megamorph? Storm but the copies get +1/+1 counters?
Draw a card at random😊
knifelink
All trans players win first turn by default oh wait that's mtg 2020
2255: after Disney purchase the last independent planet, magic the gathering (owned by Disney since 2099) will now sell "magic loot packs" on Saturn and it's moons for the low price of 4 walt-coins.
Disney buying Hasbro was already rumored back in 2012. We could see Mickey as a planeswaker before the 2030s, easy.
No D.:
Omfg hahahahaha
I think you mean DTC, the Disney-Tencent Conglomerate.
Did you mean 2025?
This video really aged well. Around seven-eight years early. Happy 30th Anniversary!
Nah, it was 20 years late. Magic has been dead for its entire history.
3019: “I cannot believe that they are reprinting black lotus as a common in the new set! This will surely kill magic the gathering”
You know that would probably do it
@@alejandrorivas4585 unless the Black Lotus card is used for something like the Archenemy battle.
This card sucks just cast balance of the heavens
By that time they’ve printed “Blackest Lotus” “Somehow Blacker than Blackest Lotus” and several other cards that are just better
POWER CREEP
"This will kill paper magic!"

or oathbreaker. or a gazillion other casual formats
Thank you
Yes. Just, yes
Casual formats will keep paper magic alive until the eventual heat-death of the universe.
@War Zone it's called the heat death because it has to do with the distribution of heat (i.e. highest possible entropy), not because of its actual temperature
Mark Rosewater; Killing Magic for 20+ years.
Mark Rosewater; The only thing keeping Magic alive after 30+ years.
What doesnt't kill one outright makes one stronger :)
Lol he is making fun of alpha investments and unsleeved media
But seriously, how will Magic survive when MaRo is gone??! 😰
@@Sheriff_K Unironically I'm actually scared now that I think about it
@@Sheriff_K That's what i'm extremely scared of too. People don't know what they have with him.
That very surreal moment when you realize that his description of 2020 Return to New Phyrexia was somehow TAMER than what actually happened in 2020.
It's too bad, Return to New Phyrexia sounds rad
And 2023 presents our dream of returning Phyrexians! ☠️
“WHY WOULD YOU ADD A SIXTH COLOR OF MANA?” 😂🤣😂this killed me
Yea since there's an article about what the 6th color would be
It's going to happen *laughs maniacally*
Orange was a twist, usually it's purple since that what they had planned originally.
Technically the 6th color already happened, and it's color-LESS!
@@darkdjinniumbrage7798 Colorless is not a color. It even says so in the rules.
Of course, everyone knows that *PURPLE* will be and IS the sixth color of Magic!
that is what made orange so controversial. Wizards is being deliberately contrarian with the sixth colour, instead of going with the obvious choice.
You mean Yellow, with the new lands being Banana Lands
I actually made purple mana decks as kid haha!
Um... Wastes?
What kind of land would it be? Space? That's a lack of land!
2002: "Magic Online is never gonna work."
2012: "Actually, it''s amazing."
2013: "Actually, it's a joke again."

2019: "Actually its amazing, because if its not then I have to admit that arena is good."
To be fair in 2002 MTGO frequently didn't work.
So you are saying I only have to wait 11 years to be able to afford a dual land? Sounds good to me
Or you can invest in brushwaggs now and sell in 10 years for profit.
MaeseEidos Ikoria has a new Brushwagg. I am getting closer to making a Brushwagg tribal deck.
haha

I've been playing since 2001, this was absolutely hilarious because I have actually heard some of those from other players😂😂
thi is evidence of two things
1- MTG is not gonna die anytime soon for sure
2- the game is full of issues
Ariel Figueroa it's like daggerfall in 2020. An old game that remains one of the best of all time in its field, is massive and immense in its depth, but is at its core outdated and clunky to us now or most newbies. It will live a long long life and we love the mess it is
Nah the players ar always just whiny as fuck
Wait... Mark Rosewater introduced the Stack to M:tG? I had no idea. Man, he really has shaped the game more than a lot of us realize.
Hehe makes sense. It definitely helped clear up most confusion around card interaction. When I started playing again after the stack was introduced many things I looked up referred me back to the stack.
I don't believe it was just him; most of the time such things are a group effort (most especially, in this case, the Rules Committee).
But he *has* done so much for this great game. : )
@@themadgamer4571 how the heck did batches work??
Haha companion go brrrr -Mark probably
@@anon2447 you dont want to know
Orange mana lol, what next? Negative casting costs?
What you did not know? That's been out for 6 months
@@koelkast9 hahaha
I mean, there was Phyrexian mana which made things practically free
They're not negative costs, they're "ranks" and you cast them by offering two creatures with identical CMCs and sacrificing them, then you move it to the battlefield from
your sideboard as a special action, so it doesn't even go on the stack!
Negative casting costs might be interesting, actually. Like, a -1 green enchantment that says “all your creatures get -1-1.” Or a -1 black sorcery that says “discard a card.” Though i could see that going phyrexian mana’s direction pretty easily.
In 2044, the Professor actually founded the New Eldraine Revival Vanguard, known by many as NERV, and began work on the Magic Instrumentality Project

Why would you make Slivers not effect all Slivers and now they look like the Predator?!?!?! Magic is over!
I love this!
Honestly I kinda hate that change. I play a sliver EDH deck sometimes and well I run hivestone and sliver overlord but if I have crystalline sliver out I really need to pay attention what I try to do which makes it a lot more challenging which is fun IMO.
2099: wotc is killing off VR mtg and all we are left with is Magic Online. This is truly the end of Magic: The Gathering
Damn, Excel Spreadsheet Simulator is gonna be around forever.
*magic arena
3 things in life are certain. Life, death, and MODO.
To quote LLR, “Damage used to go on the stack?”
Yes, and it was glorious.
Very counterintuitive, but funny. "Damage on the stack, sacrifice my Mogg Fanatic to do 1 damage, then your guy takes the 1 damage my already dead Mogg did to it in combat."
I. Cannot. Handle. The scenery changes to match the year, TOO ON POINT.
Many magic the gathering players ask the question: how does WOTC kill MTG this year?
Surpreme pffffft
Slowly
Higher prices?

30% Higher prices in Germany and new judge rules
You know…whenever I get magic burn out…I always come back to this video. It gives me a sliver (lol) of hope that the game designers do know what they’re doing and they do want to make a great experience for their players.
Enjoying your stickers yet?
About time for this video to get an update.
Type 5 Tiny Brawl is the best format! Why would Wizards do this?! 😂
At least is has been after they banned Aetherworks Pod, the card was clearly too strong for all formats
Unban Splinter Engine!
Bro they still haven't banned paradox lotus. God that card literally made standard into a one deck wins all smh
@@nopewipe8900 In todays preview for the next set Urza's Resurrection the card Yawgmoth's Recall was spoiled, I bet that card will shake up the Lotus Engine meta a lot
Y'all complain too much, just play Elder Frog Highlander until the competitive scene calms down. Wrath of Yargle and Swords to Gitrog Monsters have been some excellent additions to the format as of late.
OMG when you said TheDojo my memories went through the roof
Damn, I just started playing mtg recently and started watching the content on this channel.
Reading the title just now I almost sh** myself, I feel relieved after watching the video though.....
Ok I know that the pheranxe energy was a joke but that sounds horrifying
Googled immediately..lol...sighs of relief
Pay 1 black or 2 life: Add one energy counter.
This is pure gold... internet gold, that i can't purchase magic cards with... this video is the death of magic the gathering ☹
The part about losing Mana Burn hit me right in the feels. Loved mana burn.
Yeah that one hit me personally, haha. After taking hiatus for a few years I came back to no mana burn and was lost and confused. Magic was dead. I obviously don't care about mtg anymore commenting on this video.
That would make Death's Shadow so fast, 100% would return to magic.
My family always used to love conceding by manaburning our selves to death. We were sad when we learned it was gone.
When I came back to magic after over a decade break and told my opponent they forgot to take mana burn damage they looked at me like an insane person. LMAO
Removing it made the game much more acessible for people who arent that great at math so its understandable why they did it also makes it far easier to go infinite if it doesnt burn you to death =P
5:12 waiting for The Prof to say "Dude".
8:14 You are forgetting Wastes. They made colorless it's own mana. Also remember they joked about Purple mana as well.
Even before Purple was the joke and before Eldrazi existed, Rosewater was on record saying colorless was the sixth color.
Weird thought- are you allowed to add an unlimited number of Wastes to a Limited pool, same as the other basics?
Just hearing the words "Aetherworks Pod" sent chills down my spine.
Mark Rosewater must run recursion, with all the times he's "killed" magic.
You of all people should know, the legend never dies.
Still have more respect for him than Dan Didio or Bob Harras.
"Mark Rosewater is at it again" killed me omg lol

It's really funny because the Professor is absolutely saying Magic is dead now.

Hrmm, someone did not predict the absurd increase in secret lairs, premiumboosters for 100$ a pack, and the inclusion of non-magic-francises as functionally unique black bordered cards as the real reason mtg is dying
None of those are killing MTG. The black bordered SL's had a real potential to, but Wotc seems to have realized and will downgrade them to skins basically, reprinting Magic-lore cards for them in near sets.
There's always SOMETHING that is "ruining" Magic, but it always finds a way to survive
“In 2020, there will be phyrexian mana combined with energy” haha, like that was ever going to happen. Edit: oops, just realized there is still 4 months left in 2020 😬
Probably would've happened if not for the virus!
I think I'd prefer that reality to this one...
Companions was worse lol
[insert new mana here] can be paid with W or 2 energy
Phyrexian Energy mana sounds like an interesting mechanic. Too bad they did it before they implemented Orange mana. Definition of a dead game.
Many magic: the gathering players ask the question: Is magic really dead?
2023, Blak Lotus reprinted as common
And in the new meta it's an unplayable common
The title scared me and then the twist. That was clever as hell. I'm subbing and ringing the bell, just for that. Well done.
The Aetherworks Pod part had me dead. “It’s breaking literally every format of this game”
Tyson Fontanez lol I wonder what the text would be
Miklathesamurai Gurmag Angler was a Common.. Shit happens.
@@Sheriff_K Wait, a vanilla 5/5 broke Magic?
@@yeseylon4314 A 5/5 for 1 Mana? Yeah. It became a staple in Modern, Legacy, Pauper, and even ousted Tarmogoyf from it's lofty height, and even caused Lightning Bolt's usage to go down given that it could no longer kill the premiere threat in the format.. Though lately it hasn't seen as much play as it used to because of the formats speeding up, but it's still a contender.
(As for why it costs 1 Mana, because of how easy it is in Eternal formats to get cards into your graveyard.. Albeit now with Faithless Looting banned, the "ZombieFish" becomes worse.)
People always want change, but never like it when they get it.
Just like the Pokemon games lol
*Looks at the star wars fandom* ain't that the truth
So true. Is this satire on Mtg purple, unsleeved media and alpha investments. They are always wrong hahhaa
No they do like it.
It's just, when did you last make countless Reddit posts because you were moderately satisfied with a product?
Remember, the MTG community is not one individual, it's thousands and thousands of people, all with different opinions.
That... and most people aren't the best at predicting how change affects the future.
"Those who scream the loudest are the only ones visible in a room full of people." - Some wise bloke.
Not every change is for the better. And don't generalize. I want good changes for the game, not the bone-headed, short-sighted cash grabs and dumbing-down WOTC prefers.
Hmm, this just came up in my feed. CZcams algorithm predicting something? The Walking Dead secret lair just became available a day ago... hmmm.
I bought my first ever Secret Lair last week. Probably will be a long time before I do it again.
Let's not go to Tolarian Community College, 'tis a silly place.
The 2003 hairstyle change killed me
Edit: Now I'm LOSING it at the the 2037 look
I just paused right after 2003 to come say the exact same thing. Going to go hit play now and look forward to 2037!
Many magic the gathering players ask the question, is it worth it to be a magic the gathering player?
Answer: yes
Answer: monetarily, not by a long shot. Otherwise, definitely.
Don’t expect to make a profit. It’s like most hobbies: trading money for a good time.
Not even the Coronavirus was able to destroy this game. Nothing will. Magic: The Gathering just cannot be stopped.
2019 Oko is running rampant so Magic the gathering is dead
They banned Oko and after people spent all that money on him no one is going to want to invest money in MTG. Magic is dead.
2020 They printed the most broken mechanic ever, and now Magic is dead!
I am, of course, talking about Treachery, the new Eldrazi mechanic that replaced Annihilator in Zendikar Rising. Now instead of making you sacrifice permanents, it makes you give up control of your permanents!
I would have also accepted jokes about you as a brain in a jar in the year 3000 or a found footage video in a post appocalyptic hellscape
But seriously tho I want compensation for all those packs I opened on MTG Duels of the Planeswalkers
Professor's character work is really good. each iteration almost felt like different people
This video is just awesome.
A very good return to the old "every few years something 'killed' mtg, and hey here we are" video + an amazing funny and over the top finish.
love it!
2011 strikes me as the most accurate version of a nerd who would be saying that
Hands down, best video yet. 12 year old me was so into Jyhad as "the clearly best TCG ever" that he traded four different mox cards for some fresh booster packs. I mean, they're just lands, right?
*laughs in secret lair.
I would take every prediction you listed just for the 2030 prediction to come true.
I’m so jealous of your Microprose “Duel Of The Planeswalkers” shirt
Loved that game even though it was buggy AF. Would love play it again.
Change is the only consistency in life.
Embrace it or, well... you know.
Life will pass you by.
Thanks Prof!
Wizards of the coast: adds a new set
MTG IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then Bloomburrow came out and it seems like it's universally being received the other way lol
Been playing for 16 years, and I heard everyone of this (even said some myself), inclunding the ones from before I played.
Some more to remember :
1994: What, multicolored cards ? Are they serious ? They are destroying all of Magic balance !!! The game is DEAD.
2004: Flip cards ? Gosh, I'm so sick of them destroying the whole sense of Magic.
2011: Double-faced cards ? Are you fucking kidding me ? This is it, Magic is over now !
Oh man. I remember when damage used the stack. Sakura Tribe Elder could block, kill a thing, AND grab a land! Thanks for the nostalgia, Prof!
Oh dont get me started about Mogg Fanatic - no this is a biased action from WotC where they have over the years printed and pushed the power of bears at the expence of other creature types. They think we dont know but we know, there's alot of bear lovers over at WotC and it sickens me.
Magic: The Gathering has been dying for 26 years
just like EVE Online, its the same thing :)
That is the reason why it is still here. You can't kill, what is already dead.
We have all been dying since our birth.
Magic has so many Resurrection cards that it just wont die.
I mean, there ARE some changes that could actually negatively influence the sales of MTG, but it will never die.
... Can't really un-print cards, now can you? :D
(I'm not going into the economic(/political?) side of things, but WOtC are slowly shifting the business model of MTG without changing core aspects of the game, therefor making the game appear, and feel, more elitist for the uninitiated which in turn limits the influx of new players somewhat, but again, not going into that too much because long lists of reasons why something is bad are not only useless, they're not fun. ;)
I want to see prof as one of those Kayak commercials. Ya know the one where the guy jumps into a fountain shouting "How would i have a connection with the SALMON if i just bought it at the SUPERMARKET!"
"type five tiny brawl" had me dying. Lol
I am anticipating whichever year it is that WotC finally switches over to the Future Sight card frames. Of all the tcgs I play it is easily my favourite.
Lol.
Welcome to that year, thanks to Mystery Boosters 2 lol
You missed the other 1999 call. Mercadian Masques killing MTG.
Also, where's your second channel? I want it.
The references to Vampire the eternal struggle made me laugh. I have several boxes just sitting in my study. When I bought my friend's collection, a condition of purchase was taking his Jyhad cards too. He was clearing out his clutter.
After reading more about it, it seems kinda cool. Longer multi-player games remind me of EDH. The mechanics seem to capture the IP rather well. I think I'll learn it and give it a go. Maybe make a video about it :)
I don't even play MTG anymore but I very much enjoy these videos. When I used to draft at my local store, I'd hear the Standard players ranting about broken cards. Keep it up, Professor!
What I got out of this video: 25 MORE YEARS OF TCC CONFIRMED!
Congratulations, Prof!
Wow Professor, you age so gracefully!
I hope I look that good at 69! XD
In my opinion, the MTG community needed this video. Great stuff.
Wow! This was a great video. Caught me off guard at the beginning. :)
Old school Anime Imports!!! Nice background bro!
This video made me painfully aware of just how old I am since I remember all of these
CZcams said, "Hey, you may like this." CZcams was not wrong.
I'm sad that I've also said most of these same things, though most hardcore players likely have as well. Looking forward to see how many of these future ones come true.
Don't talk bad about orange mana. People are just upset at how powerful the orange/black combo decks are.
I was going to meet you on the table a few months back here in Michigan you seem really cool like to meet you in person and play a couple games.
This was a Great Video. Thx for all your work! Greetings from your german fanbase in Frankfurt.
No hyperbole- this was my favorite video of yours. Perfectly done! As someone who was around during chronicles, you encapsulated the mood each time. Well done.
Courage means to put a 1996 Shandalar T-shirt and believe it will suit you well...
Am I watching a MTG skit or a Yugioh skit? I can't tell anymore.
That 2009 background with all the board games, it looks so familiar. Dice Tower? Watch it Played, maybe? Or perhaps every shelf full of games simply looks the same hahaha
10 minutes well spent. Quality content as always prof. Cheers to 6 years of quality content. Errr. I mean. MAGIC THE GATHERING IS DEAD!
I was immersed for a while. Then in 2000, was mentionned "Standard" rather than "Type 2", and everything (like Magic itself) was RUINED
Apparently the 2022 edition of this is people immediately saying that the unfinity EDH legal cards are gonna kill the format when they are just gonna be fun cards that can only improve the format lol
Somehow saw this in my recommendations today. It definitely needs an update this year. This time they finally did it. Ikoria is the final straw that breaks the camel's back, the final drop that breaks the dam. For real. This time. Trust me ;)
I lost it at Aetherworks Pod. This entire video is brilliant.
I lost it at getting rid of the reserve list.
Maaaan, Congratulations to the Anniversary from Germany 😁🎊🎊🎊 Nice Video, btw😀
