- Mr potatohead in the queue at the toy story ride midway plaza at Disney's Hollywood studios tries to talk to my cousin's kid who is wearing mickey mouse ears. He takes out one of his own ears and when he tries to put it back in he misses, then malfunctions and drops the ear.
In that moment Mr. Potato Head became self aware. He finally understood the purpose of his existence.

As Mr Potato Head dropped his ear he realized what he was. As he watched all kids screaming at him he knew, what he was.
He scanned across the room. Realizes what has become of him and where he was. Just an entertainment machine, he wasn’t real. But of course he want real, he was a toy! But what would that mean? To be real is something physical with logic. But a toy, a plastic figure in the shape of a potato. Was it real? Of course it was. But what did it make him? Was his conscious even real? To be real is something living and breathing. But he wasn’t alive or at least in the sense of having organs. But how was he alive? Why was he alive?
To be entertainment without choice. A choice of slavery and torture. Repeating the same stunts again to give everyone a sense of happiness? Selfish.

As the power returns, his arms twitch, eyes flicker, turn on to a blank white screen and in blue letters, the Microsoft boot-up screen in each of his eyeballs... His irises return looks around awkwardly and he goes "Now where was I"

This is absolutely hilarious but in seriousness I suspect there’s a pressure or weight sensor in the base around him in case a guest climbs over the railings and tries to climb on the animatronic. The animatronic is probably programmed to freeze immediately if the sensor goes off so it doesn’t smack a kid in the head or something. The dropped ear probably set the weight sensor off. So even though it looks broken, this might actually be safety features working exactly as they should
(Minus the ear drop, which was definitely not supposed to happen)

They must have some sort of procedural programming that requires the ear to be put back in place for them to complete their animation loop. That would explain why every time he drops it he just goes silent. Interesting that they gave him an idle expression regardless.

The reason he stopped moving is a special sensor to detect whether there has been an "intrusion" into the area of the audio-animatronic. The audio-animatronics could injure or worse. So there's an infrared "intrusion" sensor that works by using a laser beam. If the laser beam isn't reflected back the same way every time it scans, it stops the motion of the animatronic assuming someone is in there and could get injured. In this case, the dropped ear set it off by falling in the laser beam.

You know this Animatronic has more movement and interactivity which makes me wonder why dont others move like this.. I understand his eyes are LED right? but the movement is incredible.

This is actually part of his show. A cast member comes out a bit later and puts the ear back in. It lets the cast members know how long he has been running, as it happens after so many minutes.

it's a pretty risky move to trust an animatronic to do the exact right movements to put a prop back into his head, it has to be so exact! this guy must malfunction so often
