Meeting the descendants of Japan's 'hidden Christians'

  • As Pope Francis wraps up a four-day visit to Japan, we meet some of the country's few Christians. There are some 400,000 of them in the archipelago, making up less than 0.5 percent of the population. Christianity has a troubled history in Japan as it was banned for several centuries. Some early converts refused to abandon their faith and practiced it in secret. Our team in Nagasaki meets some of the descendants of Japan's earliest Christians.

    Catholic facts of Japan:
    > In Nagasaki (which has historically been the most Catholic town in Japan) the convent founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe and its friars did not succumb to the bomb and the construction remained.
    > A similar thing happened in Hiroshima, a house of Jesuits prayed the Rosary daily and was almost untouched by the bomb; the house was very close to the ground zero of the bomb by the way.
    > Our Lady has also a confirmed apparition to sister Agnes Sasagawa in Akita.

Catholics 100% believe that the body is still an integral part of the person (along with the soul) and that's why reverence and care must be shown to the bodies of those who have passed on. Christians do not worship those statues they venerate them, just like you put a tomb stone on your family or your love ones grave, it is a way to remember the sacrifices that they have made and show them respect. It seems nobody said it in the comments below, but the main reason they worship as they do, and the reason their worshipping is somewhat similar to buddhist way of conducting rituals is because when chirstianity was persecuted in japan they needed to camouflage their christianity so they needed to make it look like buddhist and shintoist worship, in order to not get executed. Hence maria was easily linkable to kannon, goddess of mercy, hence no crosses were shown openly, hence the statues look more like buddhist statues than christian ones, hence they were called "kakure" or "hidden" christians.
It is a simple and well known historical fact, yet all the kneejerk "they are not christian, they are pagan" comments miss it.

Ah these are the Kakure Christians. I’m not sure about this person in the video but a small minority of them adhere to the beliefs of their ancestors. When the Portuguese missionaries left and the clergy were killed, the laypeople had to keep the spirit of Christianity alive. However, they started to develop rather unorthodox practices and beliefs due to their isolation from other Christians. Their rituals combined Latin, Portuguese, Japanese, Buddhist, and Shinto rituals. When Japan reestablished contact with the outside world, most were reintegrated into the Catholic Church where they were evangelized and their beliefs corrected into the mainstream teachings and rituals. A small minority did not follow this and kept this rather odd, syncretic form of Christianity.

But praying Japan from Philippines hoping they will learn the truth that theres a God. In Jesus name Amen 😌🙏

As much as I see the aim for harmony and peace between Shinto, Catholicism, Buddhism the end result is negative, as messianic Jew as must tell you, Jesus loves you but in the beginning Jesus was, and GOD is a jealous GOD and warn the Jewish people not to have any other gods before HIM but Shinto and Buddhism will keep you from knowing that Jesus said, “...I am the Truth.” Jesus says now today, yesterday, forever, “ whosoever believes in Me shall not perish but may have life everlasting.” Eternal life. We are living in the end times, seek Jesus before it is too late.

Correct Japan is a Buddhist and Shintoist nation in Asia which I do love about Japan. And I pay my tributes to Tokugawa Ieyasu and his government "Tokugawa Shogunate" for keeping the nation of Japan safe from the terrible civil wars, restoring the Buddhist temples and making sure the Jesuit Missionaries stop forcing Japanese people to convert to Christianity from conquering Japan. Without the Tokugawa Shogun there would be no Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines on Japanese soil, but I am glad the Tokugawa Shogun did exist to save the future of Japan from these terrible threats of European colonial powers by the Spanish and the Portuguese Traders who were evil at the time. Luckily the Dutch Traders had an excellent collaboration with the Tokugawa Shogun for 200 years until 1854. Tributes to Tokugawa Ieyasu!
