Meeting the descendants of Japan's 'hidden Christians'

- As Pope Francis wraps up a four-day visit to Japan, we meet some of the country's few Christians. There are some 400,000 of them in the archipelago, making up less than 0.5 percent of the population. Christianity has a troubled history in Japan as it was banned for several centuries. Some early converts refused to abandon their faith and practiced it in secret. Our team in Nagasaki meets some of the descendants of Japan's earliest Christians.

God Bless Japanese and Chinese Catholics and all Christians around the Universe.
All the deceased ...Rest in Peace.
@Ich Kämpfe Don't know what you are talking about
@Ich Kämpfe You are talking a load of nonsense while you use a Nazi emblem you stupid hypocrite.
There is nothing holy about paganism and witchcraft.
Why don't you talk about the persecution of Christians, probably because you are too ignorant and don't even know .
@Ich Kämpfe Christianity is about peace and respect for one another. I do not walk around with a sword, this 2021.
The world has evolved since then and you ignore the subjects of politics and ideology and the role they played in colonialism.
@Ich Kämpfe You have a very one sided view of history and also talk nonsense while you use a Nazi emblem which makes no sense.
You don't mention a word about persecution of Christians by the islamic sword or the viking sword etc.
@Ich Kämpfe You talk a load of crap.
You sound like a sad devil worshipping loser.
Japanese Christian's went through a lot during 16th Century, may their generations be blessed abundantly.
Catholic facts of Japan:
> In Nagasaki (which has historically been the most Catholic town in Japan) the convent founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe and its friars did not succumb to the bomb and the construction remained.
> A similar thing happened in Hiroshima, a house of Jesuits prayed the Rosary daily and was almost untouched by the bomb; the house was very close to the ground zero of the bomb by the way.
> Our Lady has also a confirmed apparition to sister Agnes Sasagawa in Akita.
What makes something a "confirmed apparation"?

@C G It is.

Putting many western Catholics to shame, perhaps we can learn from them, it's not necessarily the numbers in the pews that matter, but how much they adhere to the Catholic faith.
All uropians are made conversion people they don't think scientifically
Bro They are not Catholics .They are "hidden Christian" Cuz of persecution they have not been able to separate Buddhism from Christianity
It also has become a sort of cult of ancestry mixed with some christian and buddhist ideas

My prayers for all Christians in Japan, from a Catholic in the Philippines. Peace.
Though I'm a Baptist, I'll join in prayer with an amen 🙏
What about non-Christians?
I just love it how the Japanese Hidden Catholics pray at the grave sites of the martyrs, It shows that even when the word of the Bible is shared from mouth to mouth, they still mannaged to understand the theological knowledge that most Catholics don't know which is that the bodies of the dead are also the full person instead of believing that the person is just a soul!
According to Jesus, the dead are asleep.
@@earlysda incorrect
@@cryptinflame4308 John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
John 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
John 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
That's a common misconception actually. Catholics 100% believe that the body is still an integral part of the person (along with the soul) and that's why reverence and care must be shown to the bodies of those who have passed on. We believe this because Christ's disciples showed homage onto Christ's body after his death and prior his resurrection.
@@louisgonzales4335 ya that was a new one I've never heard before. not sure where he got that from. we literally reject transgenderism and use relics for that very reason that the body and mind and soul are connected

Thanks a lot for this report. I am thinking of moving to Japan from the US and wanted to learn more about Roman Catholicism in Japan.
Me too, I admire Japanese Catholics very much!
Japanese people Christian and non-Christian alike practise in their lives what is expected from a Christian, much more than most Christians do. Respect for elders, etiquettes, hard work, giving etc.
If you think that's the only thing that defines a Christian, you don't know what even Christian is.
Those Catholics who are criticizing / correcting people from "idolatry" do not know what they are talking about. Christians do not worship those statues they venerate them, just like you put a tomb stone on your family or your love ones grave, it is a way to remember the sacrifices that they have made and show them respect. If you saw some Christians praying in front of these so called "statue" maybe you should ask yourself why do you put a tomb stone in front of your love one grave surely it is not only to put there name, date they where born and died etc.
Yuppp. Catholicism Is Definitely Includes Blasphemy And Idolatry

This is beautiful to see🙏 amen thank you father in heaven .
The reason why Japan has a Catholic minority is because the Portuguese missionaries went to Japan in the 1500's and they converted the Japanese to Christianity.

I wonder what will the Japanese Govt and its people reaction be if the pope visits Japan.
The Pope was actually visiting Japan last year.
Pope Francis visited Japan last November 2019 he met the longest serving Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and also meet the Emperor of Japan His Majesty Emperor Naruhito in Imperial Palace in Tokyo. But few decades ago Pope Francis predessesor St. Pope John Paul II also visted Japan
He's praying some parts in Latin, by the way. The universal language of the Catholic Church.
Here in the philippines Mass is trilingual: native language and english mostly sermons, latin mostly for hymns.
In Amakusa there is a large stone with the heads of ten thousand Japanese Catholics buried under it.
oda nobunaga loves foreign and christianity he even make friend with a missionary
but toyotomi hideyoshi and tokugawa ieyasu didn't like christianity and they even banned it all over japan

I belive it's a mix of evangelical shinto and zen a little bit. Pictures of grandparents anyway is a shinto stuff. This is not about the book this is about the japanese way to go...
His house looks so nice lol. I love that Japanese use of space architecture.
It seems nobody said it in the comments below, but the main reason they worship as they do, and the reason their worshipping is somewhat similar to buddhist way of conducting rituals is because when chirstianity was persecuted in japan they needed to camouflage their christianity so they needed to make it look like buddhist and shintoist worship, in order to not get executed. Hence maria was easily linkable to kannon, goddess of mercy, hence no crosses were shown openly, hence the statues look more like buddhist statues than christian ones, hence they were called "kakure" or "hidden" christians.
It is a simple and well known historical fact, yet all the kneejerk "they are not christian, they are pagan" comments miss it.
Yes but I see the statues as very beautiful and the Japanese style suits the way they worship. Among the nature and with their martyrs.
Wow... god bless
This video reminds me the movie "Slience" that was directed by Martin Scorsese
God bless them

Japan are pretty tolerant of other religion. But the prosecution of the Christian came not because Japan hate a christian or anything, but because the Japanese christian was used by the Portuguese to undermine the power of the Shogun to facilitate colonization.
@Mervin Freeden Islam in East and Southeast Asia propagated exclusively via trade rather than military conquest.
The Russians handled it much better.
The missionaries who went to Japan did it without any political reasons. They did it out of their faith.
Actually, it is the other way around, many Japanese Political leaders wanted to use Catholism to have more power.
At least that’s what I could understand out of my personal researches.
It wasn’t there to undermine the shogunate, that was just what they thought would happen. Portugal bringing Christianity there was to spread what they believed in, and the Japanese have always been paranoid of outsiders.
This Abdul didn’t know about the story. Check the fact first Abdul
Wow super chatolic church....good Japan..

Ephesians 2:8-9
3:43 how wrong they are...
Are these people in communion with the Roman Catholic Church? Do they consider themselves a denomination?
God bless Japanese catholics..
Ah these are the Kakure Christians. I’m not sure about this person in the video but a small minority of them adhere to the beliefs of their ancestors. When the Portuguese missionaries left and the clergy were killed, the laypeople had to keep the spirit of Christianity alive. However, they started to develop rather unorthodox practices and beliefs due to their isolation from other Christians. Their rituals combined Latin, Portuguese, Japanese, Buddhist, and Shinto rituals. When Japan reestablished contact with the outside world, most were reintegrated into the Catholic Church where they were evangelized and their beliefs corrected into the mainstream teachings and rituals. A small minority did not follow this and kept this rather odd, syncretic form of Christianity.
Is there a movie about this?

But praying Japan from Philippines hoping they will learn the truth that theres a God. In Jesus name Amen 😌🙏
As much as I see the aim for harmony and peace between Shinto, Catholicism, Buddhism the end result is negative, as messianic Jew as must tell you, Jesus loves you but in the beginning Jesus was, and GOD is a jealous GOD and warn the Jewish people not to have any other gods before HIM but Shinto and Buddhism will keep you from knowing that Jesus said, “...I am the Truth.” Jesus says now today, yesterday, forever, “ whosoever believes in Me shall not perish but may have life everlasting.” Eternal life. We are living in the end times, seek Jesus before it is too late.
We don't care, jew
Catholicism has nothing to do with Christianity because it rejected the gospel preached by Jesus Christ. The man in the movie is deceived. You cannot connect Buddhism with the teachings of Christ. It is sad to watch this :'(

They tried to colonize Japan with christianity, but Japan recognised the plan and refused to be slaved...
It happened in so many other parts of the world. But Japan was able to resist.
Correct Japan is a Buddhist and Shintoist nation in Asia which I do love about Japan. And I pay my tributes to Tokugawa Ieyasu and his government "Tokugawa Shogunate" for keeping the nation of Japan safe from the terrible civil wars, restoring the Buddhist temples and making sure the Jesuit Missionaries stop forcing Japanese people to convert to Christianity from conquering Japan. Without the Tokugawa Shogun there would be no Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines on Japanese soil, but I am glad the Tokugawa Shogun did exist to save the future of Japan from these terrible threats of European colonial powers by the Spanish and the Portuguese Traders who were evil at the time. Luckily the Dutch Traders had an excellent collaboration with the Tokugawa Shogun for 200 years until 1854. Tributes to Tokugawa Ieyasu!
