10 Things You Should NEVER Do in the United States 🇺🇸 The Don'ts of Visiting America

- In today's travel vlog, we discuss 10 things you should never do in the United States, the Don'ts of Visiting America.
Just like any country there are things you should not do in the United States of America - I know that other countries are in America but the term has become slang for the United States. What things you should not do in the United States was fun to put together. I tried to keep it general since the US is so big and so culturally different depending on what part of the country you are in.
These things will help you when traveling to America. Some of these things are funny, some are serious and some are weird things about visiting the USA. So hop on for some travel advice about the Dont's of Visiting America!
Never just visit New York or Disney world. The US is so big and so diverse - go see other parts. You got a zillion lakes in Minnesota, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, a fantasy outdoor, Patagonia type work on Montana, amazing Tex Mex food in Texas, the most amazing forests in Washington State, the aloha spirit of Hawaii and on and on and on. So much to see….go try something other than New York or Disney! :)
Never get out of your car when stopped by police. In many parts of the world it is customary to get out of your car when pulled over. DO NOT do this in the US!
Never forget to tip at restaurants and bars. It is customary to tip between 15-25% in the United States. Unlike most parts of the world tipping is not only expected it’s how servers make their money!
Never get too close. In the US we like our personal space. We don’t do the kiss on the cheek and we don’t usually like people in our personal space.
Never say you like or dislike Trump. We are so so polarized and divided politically in the US now, that it just wise to keep clear of that discussion. But don’t worry beyond the rhetoric most Americans are pretty good people.
Never think you can rely on public transportation. Other than a few cities like New York and DC - the US does not have good public transportation. And if you are in smaller towns and rural areas - you’ll find no public transportation. We are very much a car culture.
Never call Soccer Football! Football is a different thing in the Unites States. If you say football, we going to think you’re talking about American football. And even further, don't try to convince an American your version of Football is better than ours. It doesn’t matter that your football is the #1 sport in the rest of the world. In our country our football is #1 and Soccer isn’t even close!
Never expect Americans to be able to speak any language other than English. Unfortunately, it’s just not something we prioritize in the US. Im just as guilty as anyone, because of the influence of US pop culture and tourism - most places I’ve been, I can get by speaking English. We don’t NEED to speak another language and there isn’t much desire to be bilingual in the US.
Never expect our pharmacies to sell just pharmaceutical stuff. In most other countries, pharmacies only have pharmaceutical products. US pharmacies are more like general stores. You can get your pharmaceutical products but you can also get groceries, toys and even beach equipment!
Never drink before you’re 21. Most of the rest of the world has much lower drinking ages. Heck, in Vietnam you can drink at any age! Not in the US. Drinking laws are very, very stick. Never drink in public. Most cities and states have strict open container laws. Having traveled internationally, I feel more comfortable going to hospitals in usa than many other countries.
I pay 18 euros or so to get my health insurance cover the costs of a hospital stay if I travel
Don’t say anything about their dogs, don’t point or look at disabled people
Both good ones! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I always have to nudge my sister when she stares at disabled people and have to mouth sorry at them, she’s 10 and doesn’t really know why you dint do that, even though I have known since I was 5.
You can comment about our dogs, nicely.
you can look at disabled people. its rude not to acknowledge them.
just dont act like you are looking at a display in a museum
Luke Prescott I used to stare at disabled people but I don’t anymore as it’s pretty rude
Never underestimate the size of the US. Drives WILL take hours. A 4 hour drive is not long at all, for perspective
Yeah, I know that for a fact. Since I travel the US in an RV now.
4 hour drive is like half my country 😂
It takes about 10 hours to drive from San Francisco to New Mexico
@@NMBPictures A 3 hour drive here is like getting to McDonalds and back in Chicago, IL during rush hour.

I feel like everyone who’s ever watched this is from the States. Lol
haha..I agree :)
And why not? I read the title and interpreted it as "Things people from other countries will expect they can do in the U.S., but you really shouldn't", which is just as interesting to us as them.
and i’m watching it from the usa too lol
Me who isn't from the US and has no intention of going, but still watching this:
I guess if you come from a country that doesn't tip, it's hard to figure out who you're supposed to tip, and who you're not supposed to tip. You don't tip the cashier in a grocery store, but you might tip the cashier where you buy your morning muffin. You tip your hairdresser, but not your doctor. You tip the person who hangs around in a fancy public bathroom handing out hand towels, but not the janitor who stops by the bathroom to mop the floor. You tip the maid for cleaning your hotel room, but you don't tip the desk clerk who gave you your key. You tip a tour bus driver, but not an airline pilot. And you definitely don't want to tip a police officer, because they might think you're trying to bribe them.
I can imagine it's very confusing. It's confusing for me and I live here.
haha...yeah it can definitely be confusing. Thanks for watching and commenting twice!
Ever see Reservoir Dogs?
Lol, the idea of tipping a cop made me fall over laughing. But yea, don't do that. Also, don't tip your mugger or carjacker.
The most important thing is to tip wait staff. Other than that, they'll usually have something on the kiosk when you check out to prompt you so you'll know.
Here in America, trains are for fun. At best, you hop on the train at Christmas time and go up the line and back singing Christmas songs and drinking hot chocolate.
haha...agreed!
Rule 11: Don't stare at people. I lived and traveled in Europe for years, and it was annoying for me as an American, especially outside the cities (and yes, I'm normal looking and not exotic at all) . We just dont hold eye contact for more than a second with strangers here, in most circumstances. It's considered rude and/or confusing.
Rule 12: Learn to not stop to chat with some random sketchy panhandler. Just say Have A Nice Day or just ignore. They all have sob stories and they all lie.
Good stuff....thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I don't know about you, but I like to stare deep into the soul of who I'm talking to.
Fostina What lol same
@@fostinawhat4861 i think he means people who you're not talking to.
Agree I don’t like people staring at me for a long period but I don’t mind if u would look at me and smile lol
Good points! In addition to politics, I would add don’t bring up religion, money, sex, or gun laws (with people you don’t really know). Lack of public transportation in Florida is something I miss from Chicago.
Oh! And keep your bikini top on!
haha..that's a good one...ill include that in the next version!
Yeah...all good points. Thanks for watching and commenting Tara.

I know someone mentioned it but I want to elaborate Americans are very into their pets they are often seen as family members or "children", alot ( but not all) of americans allow their pets on the furniture and to sleep in their beds. The pet industry here is a billion $ industry and according to surveys alot americans include their pets in celebrations giving them gifts, dressing them up and some celebrate their pets birthday , so be respectful to their pets
Yeah....it is crazy how into our pets we are for sure! Thank you for watching and commenting.

I'm from Panama and I am 13 years old. I'm learning english. I wish I could travel to USA someday. I promised my family to take them to the USA in the future. Although we already have a very comfortable life with our smart tv and more stuff. But it's a dream I want to fulfill.
You're English is great! I'm excited for you to visit the USA too! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
I hope nothing but safe travels for you! But please be careful with our hospitals! If you get sick/injured you will have to pay a HUGE amount of money. I also want to warn you about the ICE camps that have been around for a while. This is only two of the many problems we are facing with.
I'm only telling you this because a lot of the times, other countries hear about the US and are lead to believe that it's a dream to live here. But in all honesty, it's not. Not all Americans are like this and we're trying to fight for what's right, but at the moment we are not on a very good place and haven't been for many years. It's not as clean as the movies make it out to be.
@@tigerlilymuskhogean I know, I've been watching the news and I'm aware about all the problems USA is facing currently, actually, my real goal in USA is to get into a prestigious university like Harvard or MIT, have a good and enjoyful job about technology and science and take my family to places that they wanted to visit for many years like DidneyLand.
I think I am by a good way because my notes are one of the highest at school, I'm signed up in the musical band of my school, my parents really trust in me and I'm trying to do my best everyday but thanks for the advice!
America is a very beautiful place, but very dangerous too. If you ever do visit just keep your eyes out for dangerous people, and understand that there's a lot of inside conflict in America that isn't shown on the news. Nonetheless, if you ever do visit or come to reside here, I hope you will achieve your dreams and goals.

How other countries see America: Washington, trump, California,Texas,Chicago,New York

Wait, Washington, really? I thought Washington was a pretty quiet state haha

I have visited the United States before, the only reason I have went there is because my class saved enough money to pay for everybody in class (11 people including the teacher). We raised money from the mini competitions our school held. Every competition has about €100- €200 prize. Our whole class were very excited when the teacher said that we will get out of country to the US. The whole class were like: 'OMG! Did we really raise enough money?!' And the whole class were excited and some even cried because it was their first time getting out of country. Well anyways, Dia dhuit. Aoibhinn anseo. Bíodh lá maith agat!
Very cool!
We were in a situation like this! Except we travelled to Greece :)
#11: Do not harass beautiful American women who are not interested in you.
haha....that's a good one in almost any country said by the local women! I'll add to the next!!!
Or handsome American men. I get that all the time from foreigners. :p
Frrrr
That's universal fact 😂😂
True
Just some things off the top of my head.
-Do not try to enter an elevator, bus, or subway until everyone has stepped out first.
-Do not smoke around people, more specifically non-smokers and babies. (Never smoke with a child/baby in a car, some states have a law in place where you can get arrested for smoking in the car with a child in the vehicle) Smoking is slowly becoming frowned upon in the United States and many people cannot tolerate the smell of cigarette smoke.
-NEVER joke about bombs or terrorism in the U.S. These comments can land you in SEVERE trouble with federal agencies in the U.S. They will take those comments very seriously and treat it as if it is a real threat.
Good inputs. Thanks Sam.
Unfortunately a lot of people in the US still don't know how to follow the first one 😂😅🥲
Also don’t be racist.
@@lactobacillusprobiotic7029 that should be for the whole world lmao😭
i feel like america's diversity is what makes the people there very special and wonderful. they're very considerate, open, friendly, and just genuinely nice people. i'm from the philippines, and once i graduate highschool and enter college im moving to america with my family. this video was helpful, especially the tip part. we don't really tip servers in our country, we'd always think that they get paid and it's included in their salary.
Thanks you for your nice comment and thank you for watching. I love PI!
@@30AndAWakeUp woah! you still heart and reply to comments even after a year. thank you for being so interactive!
Just be careful with it. I love it here, but remember that our Healthcare is so expensive that it could put you into debt. And it's also very expensive here. America is great if you have the money, and awful if you don't. Long ago it was a place where you could move to with nothing and make something of yourself. It's not the same country anymore. It's still possible, but it's no longer easy like it used to be. It's super hard now.
@@davidschreck1321 our healthcare is covered. our family are doctors 😅
Rule 11: don't stare at someone who looks "not from the US" the US is a very culturally diverse place so try not to act shocked when you see someone who wears something different from you. Whether it may be a religious garment or just having a different style.
Good one!
Yes plus a lot of Americans come from immigrant families and will follow different cultural customs. So what one American may culturally believe in can vary widely from person to person. It’s confusing at first but that’s what makes our country so interesting
Actually, foreign travellers stare at the large numbers of Black Americans walking about freely and enjoying life. Many readily assume Blacks are either still enslaved or live in racially restricted areas out of sight and out of mind far away from desirable whites only and tourist areas. Often times foreign embassies tell their citizens to avoid areas where Blacks live, avoid large groups of Blacks, and to immediately call the police when they encounter any Black person.
@@bruhhhebrooo5269 No. Let's cut to chase: Foreign travellers stare at Black people and do not know how to interact and what to expect. Immigrant families already know that as honorary whites, they'll get a pass because everyone believes in the myth of a "multicultural" and "diverse" country.
Also don't talk about abortion or gun laws. Despite what you may see on the news, most American keep their opinion on these topics to themselves or within their family. My best friends are my friends who I don't discuss politics with. It's also just rude to go to a country and involve yourself in a political discussion that has nothing to do with you. As an American, I wouldn't go to the UK and discuss my opinion on Brexit with strangers.
Good point! Thanks for watching and commenting, Dan.
Why not discuss Brexit. We wouldn't mind.
We don't mind you discussing Brexit . We would like your opinion.

@@vanessa9704 dang brother I'm so sorry to hear that. Where were you in the US? Personally I grew up in Michigan and unfortunately you do run into some occasional racist scum but in a lot of the country people are very quick to stand up even for strangers when they hear that kind of stuff going on.
A lot of Americans including my self actually care very deeply about what has been going on in Hong Kong. Hell id love to have a beer and hear your story! An African living in Hong Kong, thats about as different from Midwestern America as it gets.
Much love brother and I hope your experience improves exponentially in the future
@@vanessa9704 I am sorry you had that experience. There are a few racists around, it is an unfortunate side effect of our freedom of speech. But the vast majority of people are not racist. In fact, most Americans are very concerned about what is going on in Honk Kong. We support your fight for freedom from tyranny, and I wish there was a way we could help without starting a world war.

Head down to the obx it’s a great place by the ocean, literally less then a few miles to water if you are in manteo
I'm an American who is getting ready to study abroad in Japan and as such just watched what not to do in Japan and how they view us there. I find it odd that they think we have no concept of personal space when in fact we REALLY value it.
It'll be interesting to see what you think. I love Japan.
The space one cannot be emphasized enough. Pushing through someone in a line or to get into public transit is a huge, extreme NO and it can potentially get you into a fight. It's seen as a way of wanting to get into a confrontation. So yeah, be very mindful not to push people.
Good tip!
This is very much the same in Ireland ... No cutting the cue!
Ummm if you’re a terrible server you can forget about me tipping you. I tip based off your service. I’m American.
Fair point.
My list of things not to do here in the U.S:
-Dont stare at strangers for a long duration
-Dont forget to tip waiters who serve you/ Uber/ or delivery services.
-Ignore anyone trying to give you their free music CD they will ultimately charge at the end.
-If you bump into someone and don't want to come off as rude just say sorry to avoid any fights.
-Don't show off any expensive items be used their could be possibilities of you getting robbed(But I never had that problem/only in places where there's not that many people around).
-If someone says "How are you?" Hows your day going?(They don't expect you to give them many details just a " I'm doing great" or quick witty brief response).
-Don't use anyone's property without asking first.
-When driving left lane is the fast lane use your blinkers and dont cut people off very eruptly unless you want a roadrager.
Thanks for sharing.
“*When you already live in america*
Ha! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Also just generally don't touch the American nor their child. And definitely DON'T take pictures of others children you will be seen as a danger and people won't like you for that.
Also respect people's dogs and don't make jokes like "lol I can eat your dog he looks so good" idk about certain places but I had encounters like this. We see out dog as not just a pet but as a genuine part of the family. Almost like a furry child
haha...yeah people in the US do treat their dog like a member of the family! Good observation! :) Thanks for watching and commenting.
I was in a restaurant with my grandpa and this older man took a photo of us, came up to us, showed us, and then showed us a bunch of pictures from his phone and walked away he gave my grandpa his number and everything. Super creepy don’t do that unless you want to get reported to the police
I would also add: Do not underestimate the size of the US. don't think you can just drive to every state in a day.
Good point
I'm from Mississippi and you have got everything true

I am German and I'm planning my first US trip (by car from Washingon to Boston). After hearing the donts I am a little bit scared.... theres so much a stranger can do wrong. Especially the "dont talk abouts". I am a 55 year old academic. I love to discuss controversial topics - and am very bad in small talk. And the "tipping" thing is even much harder to follow. To not to forget one whos in need of it I will tip everybody. Maybe I will get a confused glimpse of one or another..... and not to stare? Hmmm.. if I go to another country I do that among other things to see strange/other people than at home. Dont know how to explore the country without looking around. Of course I will try to follow the rules (we German love to follow rules). But it will be enthralling.
a lot of it is with a grain of salt...and kind of tongue and cheek. many people would gladly discuss all topics.
You’re overthinking it honestly. 95% of the time you’re only tipping for food services. If you’re getting counter service/takeout tip 15%. If you have a server tip 20% (assuming good service). If you’re just buying beers at the bar, 15-20%. Do not tip at all if you’re just buying an item at a store (even if credit card machine has a tip amount - this is often just due to the software they are using and a tip is not at all expected. You can talk about controversial topics but avoid being very opinionated about them. In general though, many Americans are going to be wholly disinterested in talking about a dramatic/controversial topic to a stranger.
Politics can be divisive. As someone from another country most people would not mind you asking questions or just showing interest. Americans would not appreciate someone from another country taking sides with one political party or another or trying to debate an issue that just relates to Americans. We travel a lot and many times people will ask political question out of curiosity. That is ok and appreciated. I am amazed at how much people from other countries know about our politics. It humbles me and makes me pay attention to what other people are concerned with in their own countries. I hope you find Americans open and friendly and go home with great memories!
A lot of what was said are more like guidelines. No one is going to be irate with you as long as you do not touch them or their property without invitation. As far as topics are concerned that is a person by person discussion. Some people are OK with these discussions and some are not unless you agree with them.
I love that you read and interact with all your comments. I just thought that was sweet. 👍🏻
I try! Thanks for watching and commenting.

As someone that has worked for tips for the last 25 years, tipping is optional. If the service is good, then tip, if the service sucks, don't tip ( or better yet leave a nickle so the server doesn't think you forgot). You are not responsible for the worker getting a living wage, that is up to the worker to figure out for themselves. For all you know their parents (or spouse) pay all their bills. Also don't reward substandard service. If someone doesn't make enough in tips, they will be motivated to find another line of work. Also Nascar is the most popular sport.

I live in the us and was watching things like about other countries so I was thinking what it would be like in America lol. Going over a lot of good things I agree as an American on all of them
Appreciate you chiming in! :)
America is a very big and beautiful place, yet also very strict and dangerous. It is a good idea to keep these thing in mind among many many others to those planning on visiting! Better safe than sorry!
For sure!
Wow. I never actually though to not get out of your car when the police come. My mom never does and now it makes sence seeing that other states its customary to. Thanks
Thanks for watching and commenting,.
So true
Thanks Julie!
Well done!
Thank you.
If you don't drive in some parts of America, you are kind of seen as a loser. Saying you don't drive and saying you don't have a job or that you didn't graduate high schoolare not that far from each other in a lot of American's eyes. If you don't drive or have a driver's license people will count that as a weakness. It is basically a rite of passage to independence and adulthood.
Good points.
Why is this so true 😅
ha!
Never hang in other peoples drive way or porch or lawn. Expect a massive amounts of napkins when you get drive thru fast food. Drinks always comes with ice 🧊. People here usually never drink carbonated water 💧.
haha...good stuff! 😊
There's barely any rules in America 💀
haha..i mean...there are a few :)
Nah there are a lot but it depends on what state you are in each state has it’s own Constitution that follows the countries Constitution. For example the death penalty still exists in some places and doesn’t exist in others. Also like how marijuana is legal in New Jersey but illegal legal in New York
5:30 well I would say that more people speak spanish than you'd think. At least that's my experience down here in Texas. I know quite a few people who at least know a little bit of spanish. But who knows maybe that's just where i live.
But also don't assume We americans don know another language. Don't talk trash about us thinking we wont understand you. You never know if the person next to you does speak your language. This applies to all countries not just America
Agree there are some places in the US where people are bilingual but it's not like most of the rest of the world where you can get by with English. It'd be hard for someone to get by in most of the US with any language other than English., save a few places near the border.
Trueee. Down here in Georgia nobody really speaks Spanish.
Exactly. That example made us seem so simple. Spend time in Texas and you will realize how many of us are bilingual.
At the age of 19, I got pulled over in the USA for having something hanging from my rearview mirror. I opened my car door and took 2 steps and the cop took his gun out and ready to use on me. As he yelled to "get back in the car". I was just on my way to work! And I was thinking to myself, "well, I think that is something they should have taught me in high school?. No, in the USA, they probably need to tell kids like I was.
good point
They teach that in driver’s Ed
@@KarenWashburn They do not teach you in drivers ED that if get out of the vehicle that you may get shot on a traffic stop. The rearview mirror part in my story was just added to explain indolence's
The first tip: While you shouldn't just hop out of your car, a lot of department's know order you to exit your car and walk to them.
That makes sense for sure.
I live in America and I think that you saying that people mostly only speak English was wrong, a HUGE amount of people in America speak Spanish.
Fair point.
78% of Americans only speak English, he never said English is the only language we speak, he said the vast majority of Americans speak only english.
@Idgaf i feel like it really depends on the state though. a lot of people visit flordia where a large majority can speak spanish.
I agree with all of these

In the United States and Canada, it's possible to turn right when the light is red, unless there's a sign forbidding doing so, which is frequent anyway. Also, traffic circles or roundabouts are unusual in the United States, except in New England.
Good stuff..thanks!
@@30AndAWakeUp You are welcome.
i would like to also travel the world full time as a career. any idea how i may be able to get started and maintain?
Come up with a plan, figure out how much it costs, and then come up with a way to fund it.. So many people do it, you can as well.
I find the tip rule most weirdest. In Germany we do tip but we don’t have to & its only like 1$, 2$ the most.
Yeah, us americans are oddballs when it comes to tipping.
I'm from the United States & I never knew about the last one.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Should do a state one
That's a good idea!
We had a family get-together in a "no-alcohol" park, We drank rum runners from jugs of "fruit punch" over ice. The kids all had to drink from cans, so we could tell the difference!
Interesting!
If a town has multiple Liquor and Laundry mats, get out of that town asap
Ha!
#8 makes me sad and embarrassed 😳😭 Por eso, sí soy bilingüe.
Yeah!!!
I always get annoyed when people think we are dumb or lazy for not speaking other languages. Let’s think about this for a minute. Our states are as big as European countries. Sometimes bigger. So we are raised and grow up around 50 countries basically, all speaking ONE language. But they grow up around 50 countries, many speaking different languages. We’d have to learn that shit too if we grew up that way. Common sense people.
fair point
2:02 yes don’t get out of your car lol
haha..yep!
Nice
Thanks!
