I visited Egypt last year and when I was staying in Cairo one of the taxi drivers there told me that he would never go to Chicago because it’s too dangerous and thinks he will randomly get shot and killed 😂

its ironic that they are complaining about americans stereotyping them WHILE stereotyping americans. also as a non-american, it is bizarre that europeans think americans not being able to name European countries is weird. mate US is as big as Europe. can YOU name even ten states or where they are? People dont know much about africa or even asia in europe either.
The thing is that usually (as we can also see from this video) the stereotypes we have about the US are true. While the ones you have about European countries are 50-50 because some of them you get them from the people who immigrated to the US 50yrs ago, so they are no longer true. For example the stereotypes that you have in the US about my country (Italy), 90% of them were true maybe 30 or 40yrs ago and they are no longer. At least that's what me and some people that I know from other parts of Europe have experienced.
That's a good point about Africa and Asia.
I think most Americans can name a country in Europe because most of us are of European descent. My school and most schools made you read a lot of English literature like Dickens and Shakespeare and so one so at the very least people would know England. We generally study WWI, WWII, and the French Revolution. I suspect very little is taught about Africa or Asia anywhere in Europe, USA or Australia because it’s dominated by white people. As a POC I feel like the Europeans in this video are speaking from a place of privilege even if they don’t realize it.
@@anndeecosita3586 In the US, most kids don't give a crap about History or Geography. They learn it because they have to, and to pass the class, but quickly forget it later. I was the same way. As an adult who would love to travel, I find myself more interested in these things.
@@maniladimatteo6750 The stereotype I have about Italians is that most of them dislike and look down on the United States. That comes from nearly every Italian I have ever met expressing dislike and disdain about the United States, so I tend to think it's pretty true.

Actually there are also a lot of europeans who don´t know much about other continents. Some are thinking that Canada is North america, Usa is central america, Mexico is south america....
I think a lot of Europeans also don't realize how large the USA is. They think they're gonna come over here for a week and visit NYC, Miami, LV and SF.

So tired of the stereotypes . I am probably an outlier, but (1) I knew where all the countries in the world were, and most of their capitals, shortly after I got my first world atlas, at age 10. (2) Americans cook at home most of the time and usually only eat at fast food places for convenience, like when they are traveling or to save money. (3) Most places in the United States are quite safe -- the exception being some low-income, high-crime areas in the cities. Even then, most places in those cities are fine. (4) Americans are raised to be civil to people they meet and do this regardless of whether or not they are "happy all the time" -- it's just considered polite. (5) The U.S. is about on par in terms of consumer tech with other developed nations I have been to. So, I find the stereotypes about the U.S. are about as accurate and informative as "Japanese all bow incessantly" or "Germans wear lederhosen and eat sausages at every meal." In other words -- not very accurate or informative.
I wouldn't take stuff like this personally. If people aren't able to tell that Americans, or anyone for that matter, aren't monoliths then they're not smart enough to worry about engaging with.

I agree as well. Whenever these stereotypes are pinned on me, I just feel labelled. People just really need to understand that Americans are not a monolith
thats why those are stereotypes maybe there should be a disclaimer clearifying what does stereotypes mean, that its just a tendency when comparing to the world because stereotypes arent able to be applicable on reality, it should be obvious that most people in the US are going to be casual people like all other people around the world there are just tendencys
@@LOLWAAHH thats the problem with stereotypes no individual person should be feeled addressed, when people talk about negative stereotypes about my people i never felt like that they mean me and that might be because people from my country dont have so much... idk how to describe it but us-americans seem to focus sometimes a lot about their nationality like pride and stuff being us-american seems more immportant, relevant while other people in the world tend to less since for example the national day is celebarted in the USA differently, in my country its not really a special day more a casual day, also we dont have flags of our country around maybe in the city in front of a parlament but thats it and definitely not on clothes but which a saw on some us-amercians which was kinda weird to me maybe thats where the difference start, why a lot of especially younger us-amercians nowadays seem to be hurt in their pride or hurt at all because of the USA constantly being dragged when comparing to other countries they care a lot more about their country and image - just my thoughts...
I hate that everyone thinks us americans only eat fast food thats such a stereotype type. yes fast food is an option but most of us do cook as well. My family and I and many others i know prefer to cook rather than eat fast food. I think ppl just think this way bc we do have more fast food chains that are the most popular but honestly ppl are just overweight here bc out portion sizes in general are huge whether that be a home cooled meal, from a restaurant, or a fast food joint
As an American, In the 90s and early 2000s I was tought a lot of history and geography so back then America was ahead in knowing a lot about other places or curious about learning more. However schools nowadays concentrate in endoctrinating stupidity. instead of useful things that kids and teens need to learn in life.
Exactly! I grew up in the 90s and graduated HS in 2001. I grew up learning about history and government of other countries, as well as geography. I worked in local news for 7 years and worked with many school districts and saw so many advancements in education, and just more that is offered to students, so I'm not exactly sure why so many lack what I would considered pretty basic knowledge of world history and geography. I also think that foreigners think of America as WASP, whereas America is made up of so many ethnic/cultural groups, and if you come from a family who immigrated to the US only a few generations ago they'd know about other countries. Heck, anyone who's ever visited New Orleans can see the influence of other cultures/countries everywhere they go.
Studies show that Americans' knowledge of history and geography has remained mostly unchanged for decades. You're just another lying conservative.

I don't understand why kids don't enjoy Geography it was my absolute favorite class/subject in middle school and high school. Learning about other countries and war conflicts was so fascinating to me.

Americans are extremely friendly, they want to talk to you all the time about everything. I’ve worked their on multiple occasions and also worked with many other foreigners and we all seemed to agree that Americans are super chatty and can’t seem to read the room when someone isn’t interested or plain uncomfortable. My coworkers within weeks or working there where telling me all their personal business and it was very jarring for me

While among ourselves we are actually varied. Many arent very talkative at all actually. In fact in your average workplace some dont even know a thing about their fellow co workers. When it comes to people from other Countries Americans who value diversity and making everyone feel welcome go sort of above the normal to make one feel included. On the opposite if an American didnt speak to you at all or others visiting they would be called cold, distant even and not very welcoming. When the worst thing you got to say about an American is they were too friendly well they did their job I suppose. The same can actually be said about visiting many Countries. Some people like learning from others and making them feel welcome and included some don't

Those visiting from other Countries usually exp being chatted to as we strive on Diveristy and making someone feel welcome. If Americans just didnt talk to visitors at all they'd be called cold and distant. It's a lose lose situation and the most petty of grievances.
Also - most felt the U.S. is not a high tech country, but virtually everything related to high tech, even the internet was created in the U.S. That's what you call willful ignorance or cognitive dissonance.
No, it depends on the context. They're in South Korea, literally the most high tech country in the world. From their perspective, the US is definitely not as high tech, and they would be correct.
@@thespankmyfrank well if they're in big cities then yeah in SK they're going to be a lot more high tech than the rural areas,,,the same for the US...New York City, LA, Chicago etc are extremely high tech but not the rural areas of the country, same is said for literally every country in the world so that is not rely an arguement

Freedom can be used in both good and bad ways. There isn’t one type of freedom, and freedom should always be a balancing act. The internet should be free for open discussion, but what happens when extending it to allow ISIS to post propaganda and beheading clips?
The Finish girl says that they pay lots of taxes, so they receive "free" healthcare. If you're paying a lot of taxes, then healthcare is certainly not "free." You are just not directly paying for it.

@@eliotsalgado9908 Look more closely at their video library. They do have a lot of videos about America (maybe because we are a leading cultural exporter), but they many videos with only Asian or Spanish-speaking guests. Or all European, too.

In middle school and 9th grade so beginning of high school we had test on middle eastern countries and European and African so I'm confused why most don't know where in the general area a country is ? And i went to school in a small town in the south east of the USA

I don’t know about every school in my country but in my school we have to know at least every country in Europe and most of the country’s in each continent + city’s. And we have a test in 7th and 9th grade on almost every country’s, seas and desert’s.

Can't name the states, says America isn't high tech when we have basically every notable tech company, is scared of guns, doesn't understand our healthcare system or why we have it. Doesn't know much about other countries. It's like talking to a walking liberal arts degree
Here is my opinion on these stereotypes. 1) I know geography pretty well and most people I know do too. 2) Fast food and convenience food, in general, are definitely a problem, but I mostly eat at home and many people do too. 3) I live in Missouri and I have a conceal and carry. I've never shot anyone and I don't worry about my children being killed in school. With that said I do think that guns are way to accessible and we need better gun laws. I do get irritated when people say that the US is unsafe. I live in Southwest Missouri and trust me, no one is going to hurt you. There are dangerous areas and safe areas like every country on the face of the earth. The Media is a big part of why that mass shooting narrative gets spread. Don't get me wrong, it does happen and we need to do more as a country but the US is often portrayed as if you will get off the plane and immediately get shot. It's not the wild west. 4) I am a very outgoing talkative person but my wife is very shy and awkward around strangers. I would say that our outgoing nature is do to our curiosity and how we are raised. I was taught to be polite and respectful and part of that is talking to others. Most of the people I know are from the South and the Midwest. Hospitality is ingrained in us from a young age. I can't speak for the rest of the country but that mentality certainly holds true for the South and Midwest. 5) I really want the Japanese toilets in the US. I would say we are on par with the major economies of the world in our tech access and expertise. I would say countries like Japan and Korea seem to be ahead of us in the use of high tech especially in daily life. Overall I liked this video. My only real complaint is about the portrayal of the US in regards to gun violence. As with most things, it is a nuanced issue and oversimplification does no one any good.

1: Can't trust random stranger's on streets
2 : Don't go with strangers
3 : Don't take anything from strangers even if they offer u.

@@Basilic361 So we're just going to pretend the 86 dead and 458 injured in Nice in 2016, 130 dead and 413 injured in Paris in 2015, 150 dead in Nice in 2015 don't matter? All mass killings are bad. But don't pretend guns are the issue. Crazy people are the issue. Should we ban buses and large trucks also?

Yea not informative at all. One small opinion against many. And remember civilians having firearms made America free in the first place. But yea I do agree with we don't really know the rest of the world as a majority. Some are interested but most don't care enough to study. @JoshyHush I dont know many Americans like her who dont even know the States. We are taught that in elementary school right along with names of Countries around the world. We also are taught Europe isnt a Country and learned about the Continents and all its Countries in Elementary school.
@JoshyHush she specifically mentions not being able to point them out on a map. So are you telling me with a map in front of you that you still cant name our States? I've even asked many others and they had no issues naming them a few took a bit longer cause we do have 52 but most named them all one missed a few only. The average surely is way above someone who cant even recognize them on a map. Sure like anyone we can forget things taught in school etc but If you have no concepts of the States around you and dont even know the name of most of them or anything that's uh on you and not normal. Noone said the person had to remember them off the top of the head. Their claim was Americans think Europe is a Country and cant even name a Country in Europe. Noone said one must name them on a spot all 100% I can tell you we absolutely understand Continents and can indeed name Countries perhaps not all especially on a spot but we certainly could name one if asked.

I feel like some of the things the Egyptian lady mentioned as restricted freedoms in her country are just cultural norms, rather official restrictions. That may be the biggest difference freedom-wise, the cultural practices, rather one country having more freedom, officially, than the other: somethings may be more culturally accepted in one society than another.

@@RecklawTheAmazing I have never had an Uber driver bring up politics. Actually in the USA, politics is a generally taboo subject to broach with strangers along with religion. This is actually something that I didn’t like about being in Europe. A lot of people once they knew I was American would give their unsolicited, unwanted political opinions.
I’ve had Uber drivers ask me on dates which made me very uncomfortable.

I think the major issue with European countries and American geography is that most countries in Europe are smaller than individual states in America.

In terms of freedom, France can't be compared to the US.
The freedom of speech for example, is very framed in France.
In my country you can get sued for your opinions. You wont't go to jail but you'll have a fine, a financial penalty if your opinion doesn't match the _"good thinking"_ , especially if your talking about arabic and black people or about jews.

in terms of freedom, America has more freedom than most of the world but that doesn't mean it's the freest.
It’s defiantly freer than the others in this video. For example the Finnish girl mentioned taxes and healthcare. In Finland and in Europe they have to pay high taxes so that the lower class can have access to free healthcare and they don’t have a choice. In america, you don’t, you pay for yourself. And she also mentions the “horror stories” when most Americans are actually insured through their job.
