In this Broadcast Award-winning, BAFTA and Emmy Award-nominated entertainment show, Taskmaster tyrant Greg Davies (Man Down, Cuckoo), with the help of his loyal assistant Alex Horne (The Horne Section and the show’s creator), sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive comedians.
Comedians that have risked life, limb, and dignity in the hope of making the Taskmaster proud so far include: Frank Skinner (The Frank Skinner Show), Mel Giedroyc (The Great British Bake Off), Romesh Ranganathan (Asian Provocateur), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Rose Matafeo (Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner 2018), and Russell Howard (The Russell Howard Hour). Unaware of what awaits them in each wax-sealed envelope, only one competitor can become the victorious owner of His Royal Task-ness’ golden head and be crowned the next Taskmaster Champion. - Komedie
Edit: Desiree did the technique! They were all trying to breathe while drinking, which is why they kept choking. The key to this is to take a few deep breaths, exhale completely to deflate your lungs, which provides more room and less pressure around your esophagus (and closes your epiglottitis), and hold your breath on the final exhale. As soon as you exhale, quickly put the glass to your mouth and tip your head back until your throat is more or less straight to let the liquid go down easier and faster. This technique is how you chug a beer without inhaling it. 😉
SCIENCE!!!
I just tried this with a cider I was drinking: I can confirm it works and I am tipsy.
I didn't even know that was a technique, I thought that was just something everyone could do? Was very confused by this task.
I read in the comments on another video that this was intended to be a tiebreaker task but since Desiree just DESTROYED they made it a main task
The classic 'reverse baddiel'
this is amazing
Thought they would have kept it as a main task because Victoria lost it

Alan Davis wearing a shirt that says "Dignity" to a task is amazing.
He mentioned on the podcast that he wanted to have the word 'dignity' **on his person** which is an inspiring spirit to go to Taskmaster with
It's specifically a reference to a joke from the Simpsons in which in which the character Kirk Van Houten is playing pictionary and he draws the image you can see on Alan's hoodie and gets into an argument with his wife because she couldn't guess it (they divorce in the episode).
It's a great joke with lots of levels; the idea of pictionary making people draw such an abstract concept, the fact that Kirk thinks that his drawing somehow represents that, and the overall irony that Kirk is a huge loser with absolutely no dignity.
I imagine it's the kind of joke that Alan really identifies with. He loves taking a somewhat self-deprecating role where he can play the fool. I think Alan is a very intelligent and skilled comedian, and I love pretty much anything that he's a part of. He's quite similar to Alex Horne in how his humour really compliments and elevates others.
@@Rhysishere I'm not saying you're wrong, but you *did* just write three paragraphs in response to a comment on a video of a task from a silly UK comedians-do-dumb-things-for-our-amusement television show.
@@Zelmel Yep, and I'm glad they did! ❤️
@@Rhysishere Thank you so much for sharing this! I really like subtle fandom, and this is a terrific example.
You're telling me Desiree is the only person that has retained the useful life skills you learn at university?
Right?
I was so confused the whole time.
i literally tried this the moment i saw the first two people struggling and i did it with the exact same ease xD
@@DerpLvIAsian you and me both xD
To be fair, I am still in the middle of my student chugging stuff life and I am pretty decent at it (a glass like that with beer takes me about 5 seconds), but I just tried to do this task myself and trying to keep my mouth visibly open far enough that you avoid “is it open” discussion also fucked me up for a bit there because that’s just not how I drink. So there is a chance that some of the contestants got thrown off their dusty chugging game by the mouth part (and I now have a new task for myself at parties: git good at open mouth chugging)
Victoria's mini meltdown at the end was the peak of this episode
"I was gonna do great things..." 🤣
"And yet, *snaps fingers* this is the person we're celebrating." lol
idk. something about her rubs me the wrong way :( I think its how she (seems) to be like "oh I am so much better". but idk maybe im wrong.
then i read a comment about how shes anti-bikers? (i need to fact check this tbh) and it made me like her less because i bike quite a bit lol
@@pvic6959 Yeah she made a remark in an onlyconnect ep about how dumb F1 is or something. I think she's just anti most things athletic/sporty.
It was the peak of every episode :D

I felt that in my soul

In her defense she is probably the smartest person to ever be on Taskmaster, and is quite successful. I'm actually surprised she agreed to come on this show, her husband won't. It's a bit low brow for them.
@@poppinlochnesshopster3249 In David's own words:
"My feeling is that I'd be shit but not in a funny way. People think maybe I'd be a good sport about it and I don't think people thinking that will increase if I'm on it. It's like I've been asked to be on Celebrity Mastermind because people think I'd be quite good at that. So why would I do it then. All I can do is ruin it by going on it and turning out to be considerably more ignorant than people expect."
and
"She really likes challenges and puzzles. I find puzzles puzzling."
It has nothing to do with their intelligence or how "low brow" taskmaster is.

I'm glad you added that last bit.. I'll forever remember the dart game

She's also apparently the only one that has chugged beer from a mug in a bar.
All those years chugging beers in college have clearly set me up for success in these sorts of situations
I didn't know chugging was a skill some people didn't have. Like, even without liqour they never chugged a glace of chocolate milk or juice as a kid?
I was thinking a funnel. I'd get that shit done quick
@@brad3950Nah. Being able to keep your throat open is def a skill
@@VideoGuy232 you don't need to keep your throat open, just your mouth. Im guessing you can't chug?
Yeah I mean I'm completely confused by how this is difficult. I was compelled to try it and chugged 24 oz and under 10 seconds without even being tempted to close my mouth. Maybe this tasted terrible?
Victoria: (takes 8 minutes to figure out how to pour a drink on the floor)
Watching Desiree chug is the only time I’ve ever felt the urge to chant “U S A U S A”
Literally our proudest moment as a people. She left the English stunned. This must have been how it felt in 1776.
I was born and raised in The Netherlands, have lived there for the majority of my adult life and even I had the urge to chant alongside you.
While watching, I went to the kitchen, poured myself a glass, and was chugging along with Desiree, thinking, what’s so hard about this task? Brits clearly don’t know how to chug!
@@brianhawthorne7603 as a brit i have no clue how this is remotely hard, i thought everyone could drink with their mouths open.
I don’t know why but I read this as “oosaoosa” and I had a lot of questions
I didn't realize it was so difficult for people to drink with their mouth open
I know right. I have been able to do this since I was a kid. I just never knew people had an issue with it.
@@redholm I am not a native speaker so I don't know the term for it but almost everyone I know can do this especially guys we do it when when want to drink water from a bottle but don't want to touch it with our lips so that everyone can drink
@@hehehoho2129 Yea. I think that might be it. I was taught early to drink without touching the lip when sharing from a soda bottle.
Absolutely baffling to me. I do it when I'm bored all the time.
I got choked just watching them!
Desiree seems like a wonderful person, looks super fun to be around
No gag reflex?
The task where she was chatting with a friend on the phone and had to say/do odd things convinced me of the same thing. She just seems so weird and fun.
simp
She really is a truly delightful person to be around.
Apparently since Alex brought her into his weird spinoff show
The instantaneous change from happy-go-lucky "Hi Alex!" Guz to greeting a loved one somberly at a funeral "How are you?" Guz is incredible. I miss his carefree boyishness.
After all the hubub and hullabaloo over quaffing some ribena, i was 100% expecting and 100% satisfied by Desiree just destroying the competition.
Chug! Chug! Chug!
Wait... can other people not drink with their mouth open? I was legit surprised how much they struggled with this
It was only after the task ended that I realised I had been watching this with my mouth wide open, as if to spur them on. I have felt brighter.
With that kind of drinking action, I thought Desiree Burch must have an engineering degree, but it was a bachelor's degree majoring in Theatre Studies, which is, as I understand it, very close drinking-wise.
As someone whose BFA Program had students hosting off-campus events based on beer pong, chugging, keg stands, and the like, yes. We were also in the southern US so we had Greek Life to help.
Be honest: did you or did you not try to drink without closing your mouth after watching that?
I didn't, cause I drink like that all the time and I know I could.
I was so surprised that 4/5 couldn't do it that I had to re assure myselfe that it was as easy as I expected it to be.
I tried and it was a lot harder than I expected. My body just wouldn’t let me swallow when I had my mouth open.
I couldn't remember ever trying before, but I can just do it without thinking. Feel like I've unlocked a new skill.
Holy moly I was celebrating like a champ when she just slammed it! My gosh! I felt like someone just needed to do it properly!
Its all even funnier when you realise they could have just drank normally and it would have been perfectly allowed since their mouths would have still needed to be somewhat open to get the drink in their mouths in the first place and with it being a glass, you can still see the mouth visibly open so they all basically just made it harder than needed
No their mouth has to *stay* visibly open the whole time. Most people close their mouth to swallow, and that's the challenge.
@@putnopvut That would only be an issue if they took the glass out of their mouth. If they kept the glass in their mouth, then their mouth will still technically be open even if they closed their lips onto the glass to swallow since there would still be that gap
@@putnopvut Im very confident trats not true
@@zoeywyllie1411 ah I see what you mean. I guess that would come down to whether Greg considers lips sealed around a glass as being an open mouth. Sounds like it would have made for some great studio banter.
@@putnopvut Since he accepted using a straw as still open, I assume a glass would get the same treatment.
Classic yard of ale technique by Desiree.
I was so confused for most of this task: what is so hard about that? Seeing Desiree do it confirmed it for me though: I have a talent I didn't know was a talent. I can do the exact same thing. xD
It's entirely a mind over matter thing. Your brain panics trying to protect the airway, not realising you're not in danger. You can trick it by pinching your nose or pushing your tongue to the roof of your mouth if you're not quite at the deep breath and chug it stage. Brains are stupid but think they're clever, but minds are cleverer and don't even realise it!
I think they didnt realize how lenient the judge would be for what counts as open, so tried to keep their mouth wide open the whole time rather than just chugging it
I honestly don't understand why most of them struggled with this so much. You don't have to close your mouth to swallow...
Right? Just buttress yourself and get it in ya!
I imagine that British people have particularly sensitive gag reflexes, it would certainly explain their aversion to seasoning in their cooking.
Yeah I'm totally confused also. I had to try it at home and tears absolutely no challenge to it at all. I was able to chug a 24 oz glass of water in maybe 5 seconds without even being tempted to close my mouth
I tried to do it myself and I can’t swallow unless my mouth is closed. I tried to swallow but nothing happened. My body just refused to do it unless I closed my mouth first. I’m so confused by all the comments from people saying it’s easy. If my mouth is closed on a straw or a glass or a bottle, I can swallow fine but if my mouth is just wide open, my body refuses.
@@ccggenius it's not a gag thing. It's a natural protect the airway thing. You gag to stop things going into the stomach, not the lungs 😋
Drinking with your mouth open is actually an acquired skill. It’s quite hard, but in peewee football they would only fill up our mouths with a squirt bottle, so I had to learn to drink with my mouth open.
How do people normally drink if not with their mouths open..?
As an Aussie I feel like we're just born with the ability to chug drinks like Desiree.
So why does Morgana have trouble?
😉
Desiree is just hands down my favourite contestant between every single series. She has the most infectious and genuine glee that just leaves smiling every time.

Desiree has been waiting for this exact challenge her entire life
How does this show only have 1 million subs I litterally stopped watching my cable when I found it
For sure one of the funniest tasks, also a great idea for a drinking game 😁
just downed my beer mouth wide open
im not an alcoholic just talented
Of all the people they've had on the show I think this cast is my favorite.
Had to have a quick drink to see if I was crazy for thinking this was the easiest thing in the world
I don't know if Desiree's American or Canadian (or even Mexican 🤷♂), but as soon as I heard the task I was like, "Oh, the North American has got this by MILES! lol" We "shotgun" beer as a rite of passage. Pretty sure it's a law in most states/estados and provinces. 🤣🤣🤣
Victoria's blatant cheating like a child trying to avoid taking her medicine is incredible
I felt like I was choking watching this
Desiree was really impressive here. It’s very difficult to do without a straw.
I appearantly have the same 'talent' as desiree, i went and immediately tried because i was sure it was easy, and i just chugged as easily. I was amazed she was the only one able to do it. Maybe its one of those things, like some people can curl their tounge or whatever
I was exactly the same, was so surprised when 4/5 couldn't do it. Genuinely thought this was a common skill
@@ticandy8549 That was my thinking too, like I can't roll my Rs and can only whistle while inhaling but I can do this 😅
I'm fairly certain that most Americans, myself included, were surprised to see how difficult most of the contestants found this task. Chugging a drink is a skill we develop in our childhood. Whether it's a glass of cold water on a hot summer's day, or a glass of milk with our meal, most of us can down it in a matter of seconds. As we get older our choice of drinks may change, but our ability to transfer those drinks from their container to their stomach doesn't change. I'm guessing that there are many Brits who can down a pint at an impressive speed, but none were contestants in series 12.
If the straw is in your mouth means your mouth is open, then if the edge of the glass is in your mouth, your mouth is open. So shouldn't you just take a deep breath and Chug the drink? Even if you do stop, just keep the edge of the glass in your mouth. I think this one is about over thinking.
You can literally just drink it from the glass. As Greg said, liquid can't go in if your mouth is closed.
That blonde girl straight up waterboarding herself😂
oh my god just fucking drink it.
This kinda confused me as I never thought people couldn't swallow with their mouth open...I started to doubt myself so I had to go and get some water to double check...its definitely possible to swallow with an open mouth, I can also do it if drinking directly from a tap...now I find it odd that they struggled so much with it.
The task highlights who did and didn't chug beer in college.
watching this makes me wanna try drinking with a straw with my mouth open, i feel like it's possible
All that matters at this point is, where is the teasers and trailers for Season 15! We're all waiting to see Franky Boyle in action!
I'd say it's rather hard to drink with your mouth closed.
I use to do this as a child for fun, I'd crush this task.
what Desiree did is what I think of as the "dehydrated, half asleep and chugging water like your life depends on it at 3am" style
or that one time I downed a large glass of sparkling water in 5 seconds flat so I could get a refill of coca cola (bit of a long and mostly boring story, but I think that was the moment my guide leader stopped being shocked when I'd do unexpected or inadvisable things)
I think I speak for all of us here when I say that hearing the entire story would be lovely.
@@googiegress7459 they drowned while drinking today...💀

I'd have to give up, I was born premature and have always had difficulty drinking. Not something I knew I even had a problem with until I was watching a documentary on life in space, turns out I swallow like an astronaut.
Never noticed before that Guz had a heart attack during this; thankful that he managed to survive this dangerous task 🙏🙏🙏

This task does make me a little nervous that someone is going to drown
For some reason I’ve always been able to chug things with my mouth open. I’d do amazing at this.
I thought I wouldn't be able to do this, but the tongue is still free to close the seal of the throat and allow swallowing, so it's not a problem!
Didn't realise this wasn't a usual thing took be able to do!!
doesn't just drinking from the glass keep your mouth as open as using straws? its still open
I think the aim of the straw is to allow you to stop for breath and to relax your mouth, while also allowing your mouth to psychologically “feel” closed when you go to swallow.
Of course as Desiree showed, that’s all unnecessary, because it’s pretty easy for most people to drink a glass of water.
None of them have ever downed a beer have they, except maybe Gaz, he was a champ up until the cold hit him.
I am just now realizing how hard it is to swallow with one's mouth open. Can't say I had ever tried it.
Lol, there's absolutely nothing hard about it, the challenge just got into their heads
I as a persom am particulary good at drinking with the mouth open. This woud have been my golden hour.

This season broke Victoria and it was amazing to watch
Admit it. You just went to the kitchen and poured a drink to see if you could chug it like Desiree. How’d that go?

Swallowing with your mouth open is a strange skill to have. As it happens I learned to do it at band camp.
I don't understand why this is so difficult for people
Right? I just had to fact check right now but it's so easy
Gag reflex. Some people have it, others don't. Having a gag reflex is actually better for survival in most cases but there are still a sizable portion of the population without and hence they win this task easier.
According to Sarah Millican if you just say iiiiii or aaaaa that helps. Or breath through your nose. That’s what my dentist says because I’m really sensitive with gaging.
@@chaoticneutral6288 dont answer guys this is a police trap
Same. Like, do some people have to remove the glass edge from their lips every time they swallow? Opening the mouth wide is a problem, but I normally have it just open enough for the tongue to hit the roof of my mouth to swallow.
I just figured chugging a pint was a prerequisite for any UK citizenship.
Unless this liquid tastes like death then this is the easiest task ever
I mean … has anyone _ever_ drunk _anything_ with their mouth _closed?_ 🤔

Is Desiree's technique just an American thing? Because that’s immediately where my mind went too, and I thought there HAS to be a second part to this task, like it can’t be that simple. I even grabbed my own glass and tried, and it wasn’t that difficult, though I was burping a bunch afterwards.
I couldn't believe this was supposed to be difficult, so I just tried (as luck would have it, I even had Ribena, so could be 100% faithful to the test), and yup. It isn't difficult at all.
