That was hilarious, thanks so much for posting. I think it also says a lot about Richard Whiteley's professionalism. He was so focussed on getting through the recording that he couldn't see at any stage that it was clearly a wind up.

Simply brilliant....Whiteley was a natural broadcaster, with a great sense of humour, these clips emphasise this. Thank you so much for posting the whole show.........we will never see his likes again.

I caught this when it aired way back when Noels House Party defined my saturday night. Now, after having worked in film, its proper fascinating to see the machinations behind the scenes. Thanks OP!

No, the audience weren't told. Only the production team, the actors playing the contestants, Carol, Susie and Mr. Portakabin TV were in on it. The audience were as much in the dark as Richard, but I think they started to suspect it was an elaborate prank at some point. Of course, Richard was totally oblivious until Noel appeared with the Gotcha trophy.

Richard didn't realize he was being wound up he probably thought it was a weird episode due to the silly antics of Richard Max, which he thought was amusing at first but by the 6 2 3 he was obviously getting pissed off lol. I always thought that when Amanda started crying and wanted the answer to the conundrum Richard had figured he was probably being set up but looking at this obviously not. When the conundrum appeared though I think he knew, he just didn't know who was doing it and why.

Great to see a glimpse of the late Michael Wylie, who was just as big a loss to Countdown as Richard Whiteley.
A great 45 minutes in all, and it is testiment to Richard's great sense of humour and personality. I doubt either Des Lynam or Des O'Connor would have been so relaxed about a set up like this.
The problem with Countdown nowadays is that it is too long. It is crying out for a return to the 2 part 30 minute format. It was only stupidity that lengthened the show anyway.

Makes sense as they want the audience reactions to be as authentic as Richard Whiteley’s.

I did 291 a different way by doing,
    3x100=300
    7-6=1
    1+8-=9
    300-9=291

  • @estebanrey

I got 291 but I did it like this...
    3 x 100 = 300
    minus the 8 leaving 292
7 divided by 7 is 1 and take it away

    here's a nice way of 291

    97*3=291
