Theory: What’s west of Westeros is a “Ring of Fire” type situation with dozens of volcanoes, including at least one large supervolcano.
Not only does this explain some of the descriptions (walls of fire and black smoke) and why there are descriptions of paradise islands (volcanic soil is incredibly fertile after all), but it would actually explain the super long winters. They’re actually volcanic winters being caused by supervolcanic eruptions.

The supposed “paradise” across the Sunset Sea is definitely a reference to Tolkien.
At the end of the book series, I imagine at least a couple characters taking a ship into the west. Frodo’s experiences in the war of the ring broke him, and traumatized him, and so he sailed into the west to the Undying Lands.
Arya might sail into the west in the books like she did in the show, provided that the ending is from GRRM’s notes. She may not have anywhere else where she feels like she can go. She may abandon Nymeria, and her pack, convinced that she deserves to be alone. Although I hope she’ll get a happier ending.
I think Asha and Theon (provided they survive the story) are better candidates for sailing into the west. Theon’s trauma under Ramsay makes him thematically resonate with Frodo, at least a slight bit. Asha may similarly want to get away from it all.
I frankly love the idea of Asha and Theon doing this. They’re siblings that never really got to grow up together. They’ve both lived through a lot of crazy times, which I think we all know is exhausting. And so they sail into the west, getting away from it all and making up for their lost childhood together. Never to return.

Having an open ending could let people theorise that she might actually BE Quaithe, bad not just telling us outright that she is or isn't. Or the dragon eggs, I personally don't really want to know if these are the same eggs as the ones in the show, it would best be left the shadows and let people speculate. This like these are kind of why the books are so good, mysteries that hint towards something but either the author doesn't want us to find out yet or even at all.

Yes the diameter of the World was know - in Ancient Greece - there was a lot knowledge lost, and in the 50 years preceding the Columbus expedition there was a lot of debate concerning size of the world and it's shape (though there were no flat-earthers thankfully). Most of what we know about Columbus comes from his successor in America - the one who started Slave trade (records show it was him, couple years after Columbus death), but since it was even then seen as something meh..., he wrote in his diaries, that Columbus started it. Was Mr. C Good man? No, (although he was jailed for punishing Spanish subjects for raping Native American Women, he was against it), but he's also not a BAD villain as often now portrayed. And since practically every source on him has an agenda (was written by his opponents, or translated into English, by person who wanted to vilify Spanish, so he "mistranslated"), he is portrayed as THE EVIL. There was no knowledge of Bacteria in 15th Century, he couldn't predict that a Genocide will happen, because the Natives weren't immune to smallpox etc. If it was now it would be a Crime, but then it was tragic turn of events. And he did have a very harsh stance on raping/killing Natives, and was punished for it. I suggest watching: czcams.com/video/ZEw8c6TmzGg/video.html Very interesting.

The practical problem with doing something like that - is that you have to not only have enough food - but - enough fruits and such to keep from getting Scurvy - the bane of ancient sailors here on Earth. They could carry enough food - but - not enough fruits and such to avoid getting Scurvy.
Here also - "enough" food is enough to go on _and_ back. Once you get down to half the food you carried - your crew, intent on not starving to death - is going to want to start back to where they know they can get food from.
Now - the people on Earth who licked that - were the Pacific Islanders and their boats - who could live off the Ocean. They could fish for food. I don't know enough about Scurvy to say but they seem to have beat that as well.
For guidance - they'd follow birds - as they knew that if they saw birds - the birds came from or were going to land. Thus they may have been guided from Island to Island by the birds making the trip.
There is speculation, based on pottery - that people crossed the Pacific this way and settled in South America where (iirc) there is supposed to be DNA evidence of a link to Asia.
In any case - these were the people who settled the Pacific Islands. They got there some how.
The thing with all of this though - is that it wasn't just one person convincing some others to choose to take a few ships and strike out into the unknown with them. The real Age of Exploration - was sponsored by the governments of nations - as Columbus was sponsored by the King and Queen of Spain. Thus - they had the resources of a nation behind them - and - there were repeated expeditions sent out over decades, gradually expanding the knowledge of the nations they came from.
One factor in this - was that their ships needed to be maintained. Thus - the Colony At the Cape of Good Hope on the tip of Africa the Dutch founded and the British took over. The Dutch intentionally founded a colony there of people who would raise animals and grow food, while having a good harbor ships half way to the Spice Islands to the East - could stop and fix whatever had broken on their ships on the way down. Then - when they were ready - they could go on, stopping again on the way back. Further Colonies were Established in India and the Far East - which gave the ships support stations once they got to where they were going.
All of this network of harbors and bases was gradually built up over the years - and - the people creating this network were doing it to make money. The Dutch were hauling a fortune in spices back to Europe.
In contrast - you did have a few Viking Families that created settlements in Iceland, Greenland and Nova Scotia - but - there was nothing there but furs they could trade with the Natives and they already had firs back in Norway. So - while the Vikings did establish a few settlements in North America - they never amounted to much - and after a while were abandoned.
Columbus found Gold in the New World. That was something worth crossing the Ocean for.
Two little girls hundreds of years apart would be unlikely to establish anything. Each of them would go out ... and ... if they didn't come back with a reason for others to make the trip - no one would.

Here's a question. You know that Eratosthenes guy? The Greek astronomer who accurately calculated the circumference of the Earth over 2000 years ago by measuring the shadow cast by the sun at two places many miles apart at the same time of the same day? Well through that he could accurately estimate the size of the Earth, just with patience and a large pole. So my question is... Have the Maesters done this? What did they find?
If they didn't do this, why not? It's amazingly easy to do, ignoring the long walk directly North you'd have to do.
If they *did* do this, why don't we know about it? Is there some secret that they want to keep hidden?
Oh my god... Did they discover the world of Ice and Fire was FLAT!?

THIZZAVELI The ancient Greeks took their knowledge less from Africans (though the role of Egypt should not be discounted), but from the Societies in the Middle East and Asia Minor, as well as from the Minoans, who were an island civilization in the Mediterranean. Of course, those greeks were almost entirely wiped out, along with all of the other civilizations, by the "Sea Peoples". The (somewhat less than before) Ancient Greeks then had to rediscover all the knowledge lost, and eventually came to expand upon it. The world was brought beyond the state of the medieval dark ages, where alarmingly little knowledge was able to persist

THIZZAVELI Perhaps you are confusing "peaceful" for settled, agrarian. It seems as well that you misunderstand the timeline of the ancient civilizations in the area.
The Kushites of the area encompassing Ethiopia are the earliest solidly recorded in the region beyond Egyptian trade with cultures who did not themselves make records of their civilization. These were Egyptians who had moved south following the Bronze Age collapse.
Before them was a land referred to as Punt, which lacked the widespread domestication of animals that would indicate an advanced civilization. Similar to the Native American civilizations of the more recent past, they would likely have instead formed systems contemporary with their peers while picking up knowledge through their own trade with the bronze age societies.

I’ll preface my comment by say that I do appreciate how George tries to keep with the reality of his world and how he gives us events in the most realistic way possible: through stories passed down. Now that that’s out of the way I have to say that sometimes, I wish he’d just tell us straight up what’s going on. Like, at this point can he PLEASE just tell us exactly what tf happened in these situations? I don’t wanna hear about whatever a maester may or may not have transcribed, I just need legit answers to my questions!! Anyone else feel this way sometimes?😭😂

I have a theory, my good friends! Are you ready? Here goes...
The world that Westeros is found on is a similar size to our earth because if it were a much bigger rocky planet than earth its gravity would be stronger, which would effect the way the humans in GoT move around. Certainly they would learn to move differently than us. Riding on horseback in full armour, for example, would be extremely difficult for horses to carry, and swinging swords and hammers around would be much harder.
Because the gravity in GoT is similar to earth's we can safely assume that its size is also similar. So the Sunset Sea shouldn't be any bigger than the Pacific at the most. If it's as big as the Pacific then it's likely that the other side of the Sunset Sea would reach the east coast of Essos, or whatever the mainland is called east of Westeros. But if the sea is smaller, say, the Atlantic, then there could be lands somewhere in the middle, which would still mean a ship would have to travel 1500 miles west before even getting halfway.
