- This hike was in late September 2022. Rainbow Mountain, Peru. What You Should Know. Rocking up to 16,535’/ 5,040m. This amazing and challenging day hike is an adventure worth seeing with your very own eyes. Be prepared and watch this video.
**I DO NOT recommend having your current Passport stamped at the lookout. Most countries don’t recognize the stamp and it could compromise entry.

Peak performance would be an over statement. Haha. The sun was so very pretty up there. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching Donna!
this video is not only well made but also contains all key-informations, honestly told. it helped me a lot, to get a idea what to expect. very good work, youre talented 🙂👍
Thank you! Glad it helped!
Great video! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching!
That is some serious altitude! I've been looking forward to 👀 your hike ever since I saw that you went on vacation. Early start, but I guess that is the price to pay sometimes. Did it remind you of your grand canyon hike? You had an early start on that one.
Oh yes! We were up there! There is some similarity to the GC, but very different. Both are magical places. More on the way. Thanks for watching!
Good job
Thanks!
16k is the real deal! I'd have to stop for so many smoke breaks! 🤣 Gorgeous hike brother.
Of course you would! Haha.
Smoke break.🤣🤣
Bro…. I’m saving for a trip to Peru, now. Jelly. Planning for sometime within the next 3 years. Can’t wait.
Highly recommended. The country is in a little turmoil currently. That will destroy the tourism there unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
@@robpelton turmoil? Violence?
@@andyackerman7123 protests, economic issues and natural disasters. It’s no bueno.
Thanks for the great tips! However, you mentioned about using bathroom quite often, they do have potable bathrooms along the way? And how long did it take you to walk up there?
And on ur descriptions, u mentioned not to stamp the passport which may compromise the entry, which entry? Did u mean at the US customs?
Hi Connie! There is one bathroom on the way up. I went elsewhere most times. The hike was 5ish hours in total. I’d say 2-3 hours up. Regarding the passport stamp, I have heard some customs globally, have an issue with the stamp as Rainbow Mtn isn’t a country. I can’t confirm this claim, but better to be safe IMO. Thanks for watching!
Hi Rob...it's advisable to carry your passport on your person when in a foreign country. It's your "I. D." card, in a way. Six months ago I was in Peru as a tourist. On one particular day, I was with a female German tourist who had a sudden medical emergency. When the hotel staff members came to her aid after I alerted them, the FIRST THING they asked to see was her passport. Then they asked for the phone number of her emergency contact, and then her insurance documents. Likewise, when the ambulance arrived, the FIRST THING they asked to see was her passport. I keep my passport secured in a zipped pocket of my pants at all times when abroad. You just never know what might happen, medically or otherwise.
I carry laminated copies while out and about. I leave originals in a secured place in my accommodation. Hasn’t been an issue.
Muy bello y full mate de coca.
Yes indeed!
Dope shit man 😎
Well thankee.
The coloration in those mountains is cool. You are right. There were a ton of people there, and it was a circus and Krusty the clown was there!!! Lol!!! Sorry I had to.😁
A sight to behold in person and I add to the clown show fo sho!!
What time did you get back to Cusco after the hike ? Did you folks make it back in Cusco by 5 PM ?
Yep. Right about 5pm. Thanks for watching!
Those souvenir passport stamps should only go in old passports or other notebooks. Certain countries are really strict and won't even let you in if you have one.
That makes sense. I’ll note that in the description. Thanks!
Are you allowed to take dirt bikes up that trail? What about regular mountain bikes? Are drones allowed to be flown? Thanks!
I don’t see why you couldn’t use a bike. There were a couple of dirt bikes headed up. However, there is a certain point near the 1st lookout that you can only go on foot.
Did you go on a private tour? Do you have the info of the guide you used?
Yes! We used Killa Expeditions. Great outfit and our guide, Frank, was top notch.
Rob, did you take any medications to prepare for this hike to a very high altitude, such as acetazolamide or dexamethasone?
I did not.
do you happen to know the price for the horse ride up :)
Very cheap by US standards, but don’t know the actual price. Lots of people used them though!
Finally...
😝
that liquid is a perfume called Agua de Florida
What guide company did you go with for this adventure?
Killa Expeditions. Frank, our guide. Is top notch!
What was the oil they used to clear up the sinuses? Sounds powerful.
Agua De Florida! amzn.to/3NtoG1F
@@robpelton its ok I found one thanks :D
Is Vinicunca!!!
Hey mate, how long did you need to climb it with stops?
2.5 - 3 hours. Walking around at 4,900m is tough!
@@robpelton hey i just did it today in less than 40 monutes.
Woo! Great work! I’m nowhere near fit enough to do that. Well done.
What month did you do this hike ?
Late September.
Is the peak bit tough terrain wise and steep?
The peak is a little steep, but not rough at all. The challenge is the altitude. Get there early, take your time and enjoy the experience!
@robpelton thank you!! I'm super unfit so trying to get into running and hiking now so that I can do this in June when I go peru
@@rabbitnitasha just be sure to spend some time in Cusco to get acclimated.
@@robpelton thank you. We shall!
Great video, really informative.
what month did you go? thanks
September.
Bro, thats the same guide I got 😂
Frank is legit!!
Fantastic! Thank you Rob.
Those leaves are truly a Godsend, according to my understanding, true medicine of the Andes. And it's, arguably, the only proper way to have compounds of cocaine.
I wonder how horseradish would be like 16,000' above, if it's potent like the oil.
Ya, the Coca leaves are very useful! Funny though, I didn’t feel coked up. Lol. Great question! I wouldn’t know as I hate horseradish. Haha.
god damn bro them brown circles under those eyes tho
Ah yes. Dehydration at its finest. Lol.
Coca tea… same plant that makes Cocaine.
Ha! Yep. I make the correction in the vid. Thanks Andy!
I know the question might be silly but what about restrooms?
The only restroom that I recall is right at the parking lot. There is a little snack stand up a bit, but I don’t remember if there was one there. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
7:21 serious question,
where do you pee at?
Do people stare at you peeing?
A very fair question! I found “out of the way” spots just over a rise and made it quick. It helped we were so early too.
Hahaha he said coca tea is 'caffienated'
PG-13. Lol
I wouldnt encorauge using the horses. People should get in shape and prepare for this trip instead of using horses . Only when there s a very few exceptions . But not for laziness.
I didn’t even know that had horses! People will do what they do though.
