On the character's 3D model is written the name: "Mecha Sonic Model No. 29" but its character select name is "Rocket Metal".
This might be a confirmation that every Sonic robot clone comes from the "Mecha Sonic" line of production but each individual model have unique nicknames like "Metal Sonic" or "Rocket Metal".
Also interesting since the placement of CD is heavily debated among fans, some say it was between 1 and 2, others between 3&K and Mania, for all we know it's a replica of Metal Sonic in Robotniks many attempts to recreate his original and best model, but none of them are as good as the original only specializing in 2 field, or all these mecha would eventually lead to his perfect creation of Metal Sonic.

Any Robotnik/Eggman game would be entertaining, but a Tycoon-styled game would be SO MUCH FUN!
To be fair, it being a clone fighter makes some sense if you just swapped the spindash with the jet transformation. It wasnt uncommon for old fighting games to have secret bosses that were just souped up clones of characters already existing.
Reptile in MK1 was literally just blue ninja + yellow ninja = green ninja with both movesets at once
Streets of rage with the robot bosses.
Okay wild concept: what if rocket metal is HUGE and is literally the shuttle eggman used to get to the death egg two, the scene of eggman laughing takes place in them.
Depending on how far away Rocket Metal is from the Death Egg 2 in that opening scene, that is actually plausible.
Now it's even more of a Transformer.
This guy’s got such an underrated design, gotta love him. Really hoping he returns in some form, he’s too good to be a one shot.
Eggman making 29 different Mecha Sonics would actually be a good excuse to use all those scrapped designs from Xtreme, come to think of it.

Well the game itself doesn't really have to be canon for them to be able to make Rocket Metal a reality in the game canon. Just give him some changes, maybe change the model number, but it's still possible. Plausible? Not really, but still possible. Would definitely be cool tho.
It won't happen, but some sort of spin off with a boss rush where you fight all the different Mechas could be pretty interesting
@@seamistseamist In my headcanon, the Chaos Emerald that was stolen by Fang/Nack was a copy made by doctor Eggman to make him enter the tournament whitch would slow down the whole thing, giving him more time to prepare a counter attack (Eggman put it in an unguarded place on purpose an Nack/Fang didn't know that he had a fake emerald)

As I said before, its interesting how they slowly separate the "two forms" of Sonic Robots:
The "Metal Series" (Game Gear Metal Sonic, Sonic CD Metal Sonic, Metal Sally, etc...) are lighter, deadlier, sharper, and perfect assassins and servants to slay down weak civilians and other characters.
The "Mecha Series" (Sonic 1 Silver Sonic, Archie Silver Sonic, Mecha Sonic from S3&K, early Archie Mecha Sonic, etc...) are bulkier, tougher, bigger, and virtually indestructible. True powerhouses. (Seriously, look at how the fans used him in Super Mario Bros. Z! If they used Metal Sonic, he'd look too thin and weak compared to the rest of the cast.)
Rocket Metal seems to be a mix of Metal Sonic and bits and pieces from Mecha Sonic/Silver Sonic.
The name of "Mecha Sonic No. 29" makes me think that Eggman tinkers with Sonic Robots (Metal and Mecha alike) like how Tony Stark built multiple other Iron Man suits in Iron Man 3. Some were better than others and had special abilities, kinda like how Rocket Metal is pretty much a space version of Metal Sonic.
Also, don't be so hard on yourself Nick! I love seeing you talk about a small characters and things of this fandom! It's just an awesome collection of info, art and some speculation! It's just cool to talk about this stuff, no matter how boring or silly it may seem.
Super Minor correction, Rocket Metal's moveset is a copy of Knux, not Sonic's moveset. That aside, glad to see RM get brought up this month. He's by far one of my favorite takes on a robot Sonic, despite how ridiculous he may look at first glance.

i like to think "mecha sonic" is the series name for all robotic sonic replicants, where names like "metal sonic," "silver sonic," "robo sonic" etc are all names for specific models, so Rocket Metal is the name of this particular model of Mecha Sonic

It's always so fascinating when a few short seconds of video creates so much MADNESS in the Sonic community.
Eggman theoretically having a bunch of varied Mecha Sonics to try out different powers and nonsense reminds me of Iron Man's varied suits in some media.

Headcannon: he was part of a transformers crossover pitch but since it got denied they used him somewhere else since he’s the most designed out of the other ones in that game.
This version of metal could be a good boss to fight with Tails on bipedal the Tornado in Adventure.
PD: Sega could at least use this version of metal for a Minigame with the Tornado. It unlikely it happen, lately Sega don't know what too do with the support, side and inclusive main character, and part of the problem is they try to put the most of them in each game. Hope they fix that problem in future games.
We’d have to get rid of the Wisps that exists to give Sonic abilities of the other characters first.
@@rayvenkman2087 I sincerelly like the Wisp, they are one of the few new ideas that integrate well to Sonic franchice, the Whispon are a good idea but not well explored in Forces they limmit their usage as simple weapons. What I do instead of cut them out is give the other characters upgrades(like adventure did) as personalized whispons like Whisper, but asosiating a single Whisp that match the ability of the user. Like Knucles with Drill Wispon claws.Beat or Fire Whisp Shoes to enhanced jump heigh or double jump.
The whisp work but they don't try anything to make them work with anyone except Sonic. My point it instaed to put them aside they can be used to make more "Flashy" the abilities they already have.
PD: we could give Amy any wisp to enhance her hammer or a Jade Wisp to recover her invisible Abilities(with a item like Jade Dres Jade Veil)

I feel like rocket metal seems to be able to fight super sonic, like all the super sonic fights are in space so making a mecha able to move in no gravity and able to rival supers speed should be not impossible.

Ahhh, sweet! Glad to see the Rocket Metal get some love. Was just wondering when you'd upload again earlier. Loving this year's Mecha March Madness, man.
That transformation Rocket Metal does is pretty awesome. Having grown up loving Transformers something like that always catches my attention. And yeah, goofy details are a lot of fun. Like when the Archie comics brought back Robotnik's Drill Car from Sonic 2 for a few issues, giving airboards to characters that never used them in game, or making the transforming cars actual cars people use rather just racing machines. It would be great if the new comic found a way to work in Rocket Metal and make him work. I mean that's what I loved about how Ian handled the comics, he treated the franchise like a big sandbox. He wasn't afraid to bring back tools and gear from older games and expand on them. I mean for years and years I wrote my own fanfics about my own cast of characters just to have them exploring Station Square, raising chao, or playing with recovered Robotnik technology.

What if in Sonic Frontiers you could find all these obscure Sonic robots lying broken on the island or wherever you are, like they'd be discarded there after being beaten or replaced by the mainstream Metal or whatever, and you could somehow activate and fight them all as a form of side-quest or collectible or something?
That would be cool. I commented elsewhere that a boss rush of them all would be an interesting concept. Sadly I doubt it'll happen.
@@ShaimingLong There was one of _sorts_ in the Lego Dimensions Sonic level but sadly it only included like two robots outside of Metal (who was at the end) and were taken out by just a couple of hits. It _did_ give 16-bit Silver Sonic/Mecha Sonic 1.0. a new name to distinguish him from the other Silver and Mecha Sonics though, Robo-Sonic, so at least there's that.
Metal Sonic becoming a transformer cracked me up when I first saw it .
The models in Sonic Fighters are underrated, the proportions on Classic Sonic never looked this good in 3D.
We actually have a theory on the name Mecha Sonic Model No 29 where he was a part of fleet that guarded the Death Egg from intruders and it was just the 29 one in the fleet. This could also be why we see him in the intro because he's patrolling the perimeter for intruder.
I've never had Fighters, it always seemed like a *great* concept. Of course, that meant missing out on this design. He's not much, sure, but his very existence can change a lot about canon, and the stories we create. Where we previously saw one Mecha at a time, continuously improving, what I see from Rocket Metal and his full name is something new - what if rather than focusing on one perfect iteration, Sonic's niches justified making dozens of Sonic-based models for more purposes, even replacing weaker Badniks (There already where a few spinners!)? This is nowhere near supported, but it would be interesting to see.
P.S. I'm still impressed by that transformation. It didn't need to be advanced at all, but it almost looks realistic!
I think our lives would be complete if some company like Takara or Bandai made a Diecast Rocket Metal figure that can transform.
That last joke is exactly how they should've re-introduced this model!
During the Metal races in Colors Ultimate, have Metal grab a Rocket Whisp and morph into Rocket Metal.
Chalk up yet another missed opportunity for _that_ game.

If Mania managed to bring back Mecha mk1 and Metal Sonic Kai, I feel like it wouldn't be too far fetched to imagine Rocket Metal as a cameo in an eventual Mania sequel.

I remember, I had this game on my Xbox 360 as a kid and was obsessed with it.
I was sooooo curious who this character was, but I didn’t really know about google and stuff at the time, and no one normal likes sonic, so I was just alone with my theories.
It’s thrilling to see my main metallic man on the big screen
Side note, Fighters was also the first sonic game that I really got into, I had played the old games beforehand, but never beaten any of them.
Which is why for the longest time I thought that there was supposed to be 8 Chaos Emeralds, and everyone else was wrong

I feel like Rocket Metal used to be a final fight when turning Super Super against him. Perhaps it was supposed to match not Sonic's speed, but Super Sonic's speed. Just imagine it, a final cutscene where Sonic flies off the death egg instead of taking the rocket, maybe even have a small scene where the rocket won't even start to make it feel more risky. And while you see the trail fly back, you can just see Rocket fly at him in high speed, even out speeding him. And there we have the true final match, maybe on a small meteor, maybe on the tremour of the death egg flying down, but just one last match against Eggman's new strongest machine. One that can even hurt the likes of Super Sonic, and only with him defeated, you could call yourself THE Sonic the Fighter
I’ve always been wondering about the Rocket Metal Sonic, I always saw it as a form.
MS-29 "Rocket Metal", I just like the transforming aspect. Imagine it in jet mode firing at Sonic to clip him and transform back for a powerful melee strike as Sonic slows from the previous hit!
My thoughts here is that Metal Sonic is likely counted among the Mecha Sonic series, he just also was given a unique name. Rocket Metal even seems to be a good example of this, since while he is officially Mecha Sonic no. 29, he also gets the name Rocket Metal (presumably his full name would be Rocket Metal Sonic, but they didn't have the space for that). Rocket Metal may have been intended as a transformation or upgrade on the original Metal, but without any confirmation I'm inclined to think he was his own robot since Metal continues unchanged from here, Eggy doesn't have any reason to upgrade then downgrade Metal over just making a new robot, and of course there's no way Metal Sonic was #29.
What if "Mecha Sonic" isn't a character, but a descriptor - *Mechanical Sonic* - which would make Mecha Sonic, Silver Sonic, Metal Sonic, and Rocket Metal *all* one Mecha Sonic model or another.

I've been seeing lost of Rocket Metal Sonic love lately but I can't complain! Something about the goofy design was always really charming to me!
8:06 - So...here's a REALLY out there thought - a Sonic the Fighters Arcade1Up cab was seen in a recent leak. What if...they finished this guy up for that version? I mean, sometimes, but increasingly so in newer fighting game cabs, there ARE modifications to the games inside, like all modern fighting cabs having online play, E.Honda's stage got censored in SF2 (no, really, look it up), Fei Long's flag of origin got changed due to Capcon's Chinese bootlicking, Killer Instinct had it's rom incinerated of any mention of Nintendo...it’s not unheard of for things to get added or removed from these releases, so... 😏
(Inb4 they get lazy and not include Honey despite her obviously existing in a version of the game's coding).
I wish Rocket Metal could be utilised in more Sonic media. It's like Metal Sonic took inspiration from Starscream and Genesect and made himself into both, and I love it!

That brief talk about weird brand toys made me remember a weird line of Sonic toys that just existed once called the Sonic Metal Force where the characters (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Tails) were wearing armor and had weird emerald staffs. Thost just _existed_ and their existence perplexed even 8 year old me.
I would love it if IDW one day do their own version of Mecha Madness, perhaps with Metal going Neo once more after being replaced by Eggman and going out to restore all the Metal's and Mecha's Eggman has created, even going so far as Mecha Knuckles, Tails Doll, and all of Eggman's wacky creations that have been mentioned in this fun series. I think it would be pretty cool, but I'm sure the idea of Metal becoming a rival force to Eggman, similar to Starline right now, would probably not be allowed, even if temporary. Still, it's a fun idea for a story arc, I can see it covering somewhere between 5-15 issues depending on writer.
Metal Sonic's vehicle in S&SASR Transformed looks like a Metal Kyogre. But I'd love it if metal sonic got this as a kinda armor for a space battle in a sonic game.
Like a real STARDUST Speedway like race or boss battle on the run while Metal Sonic in his Rocket Armor Pack is zooping around and trying to take you down? Sign me up.
I kinda see rocket metal being a sort of counter to super sonic. The thing eggman fears most when flying in space
I can think of many ways to bring back Rocket Metal
1. Rerelease Fighters again and finish Rocket Metal. Maybe make him an unlock-able character you get for beating the game with all characters.
2. Have Metal take on this appearance in the comics for an arc. Maybe he would be upgraded to be a counter to the Tornado.
3. Make Rocket Metal a boss fight in a future Sonic game.
4. Have a line of figures based on the roster of fighters. This way we get Rocket Metal and a classic Espio. It’s a win-win.
5. Add him in some artwork, Sega had Majin Sonic in art work for Halloween, and he only appeared in CD (He might’ve appeared in the Archie comics, but I don’t know a ton about them)
I can’t stop thinking of a “Ultimate Metal Sonic” which is an amalgamation of all the different Metal Sonic’s.
Maybe you could have Metal Sonic transform based on the terrain he’s in. You could have Rocket Metal be his airborn form, then Mecha Sonic Marc3 could be his in/on ground form, then an interpretation of Johnny could be his water form.
You could have him combine with wisps as well. Maybe the wisps would enhance some of his powers. He’d be able to flying faster with the hawk, and drill faster with the drill. Maybe the triangle wisp or whatever could let him wall jump. Now that I think about it, having an invisible Metal Sonic that can bounce off walls and drill through the floor would be the most annoying thing to fight.
His hands could transform into the little claws, or the finger guns, or some spikes.
God, there’s so much you can do with this character.
Oooh! I didn't even know about Rocket Metal until you made this video! Actually, I've never played Sonic the Fighters before, so that's probably why I didn't know about this version of Mecha Sonic. I do wonder if they will show him again in a future game. Awesome video as always!

One thing I have to say: I like how Metal Sonic's car in Transformed looks. The fact that there are very little spots on the outside that aren't blue looks very clean to me. But a reference to Rocket Metal would have been cool.
The thing about Rocket Metal, Mechless Eggman, and the Egg robo in the intro, the intro is actually done in-engine where they play special animations for the characters - the intro is basically P1 vs P2 with special animations.
I always thought they could bring Rocket Metal into the IDW comic. Maybe Eggman or Metal is trying to distract Sonic and what gets Sonic to play into their hands is racing. There's a race taking place with the main cast set up by a mysterious organizer but everyone is pretty sure it's an Eggman trap and at the starting line we see a giant version of Mecha Sonic no. 29 and Sonic is extremely excited.

It could be the Mecha are a experimental line of prototype to test new technologies for Metal Sonic's Upgrades (as games treat all as a single being, look like Eggman put the same ai on each of the bodies). And when they fulfill their test subject time, they are repropource as guards.
I don’t recall where I heard this but apparently the rocket metal is the size of a actual space ship and would be gigantic compared to sonic since he is not tiny compared to the death egg in the opening but I’m unsure, so maybe he is a giant space ship or something like that

Sure, transformation gimmicks tend to have an adverse effect on the aesthetic and functionality of each individual mode, but Rocket Metal is unique in that those clunky and cumbersome aspects were part of the original design from the get go, it's what gives the design its unique charm.

In a fan game called ‘Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit’ if you get all the chaos emeralds, you get a secret final boss where metal sonic, using the negative energy of the chaos emeralds, transforms into none other than rocket metal!
What if they made the jet head smaller, but it sorta expands when he enters "flight mode"?
Kinda like how in SA2, the wings on Tails' plane can retract or come back out depending on the form the Tornado takes.

Man, I loved this robot from the first sight. So creative and unique for Sonic universe.
Instead of doing a spin dash he should just do the figure 8 running in place thing and put his head down, and the moment he releases activate the boosters on his feet
Just a thought. What if rocket metal was actually a giant robot piloted by metal? Like a death egg robot but for metal and designed for quick deployment thus the transformation. It's a mecha and it's carrier ship all in one

My personal theory for Rocket Metal was that he was made to keep Metal Sonic's jet turbine speed, but remove the obstacle of being basically incapable of steering or slowing down decently by just making him turn into a fully-fledged, sleek jet that has finer steering than a robotic hedgehog that lets its limbs dangle in the wind.
Back when I was a kid i also had another theory that the yellow markings, flimsier-looking frame and his more expressive eyes to mean he was actually something TAILS made from spare parts he stole from Robotnik to spy on the Death Egg.

I just can't see S3K Mecha Sonic turn yellow without the words "I'LL CRUSH YOU" invading my mind.
Even the wiki doesn't cover this, but supposedly, whether through the operator's manual or a press release, it's stated that it's actually a spy bot from Tails discovering the Death Egg II.

The fact that this particular iteration of a robot Sonic is No. 29 immediately made me think about Iron Man's line-up of suits.
Tony Stark's first iteration of Iron Man was silver, much like Silver Sonic. It wasn't only until a few or so different iterations of Iron Man do we see the suit we all know and love today, sounds a little familiar, no?
I just thought while it's not 1-to-1, the Mecha series reminds me of Iron Man in a sense.

When I first saw it I thought Rocket Metal was just a vehicle, like just a ship that Eggman used to fly up to the Death Egg that looked like Metal Sonic because of his sense of aesthetics, but that theory was debunked by the character select thing. I DID make an action figure of this guy back in the day because of course I did
I would love a game where we just fight different versions of metal sonic and they each have different things that make them special
Maybe we could have a race against rocket metal in some type of Neo death egg zone (thinking it would kinda look like the death egg but with casino zone’s LED lights, so kinda like Eggman land but in space)
Maybe we could also see Metal knuckles come back in it?
