The Paradise Syndrome has a special place in my heart because when I first watched Star Trek I was under the impression that I had seen them all. Then years later I came across this one and it was like “whoa, a new episode of Star Trek!”
So I am completely unable to judge its quality.

The little girl, Pamelyn Ferdin, was one of the busiest child actors of the late 60's through the late 1970's. Pamelyn voiced Lucy in a couple of Charlie Brown shows. She and Brian Tochi would go on to star on a Saturday morning TV series, "Space Academy" with "Lost in Space" star Jonathan Harris.

*Regarding the Nomad cloaking device* - actually, that prop was "Sargonomad" - part Nomad, part Sargon. Imagine if Nomad merged with Sargon instead of Tahn Ru, the alien probe? Well, they did merge, and combined they became a Romulan cloaking device. Far out!
*Trivia:* When the Warp Engines burn out, Scotty cries, "My bairns, my pooor bairns." Wikipedia defines bairn as, 'Bairn is a Northern England English, Scottish English and Scots term for a child.'. Aww, Scotty just witnessed his babies die! Wow! Credit goes to James Doohan for that line, it surely was not in the script. He did that a few times in the show - like he curses in the 'Doomsday Machine' when he's at the Jeffries Tube trying to fix the short circuiting transporter to get Kirk back before the Constellation blows up inside the Planet Killer/Doomsday Machine. "Shluken Shlaken" it sounds like to me lol - Doohan said at some point he grumbled at that moment "Mutherrr eehffer!" in Scottish English.
*Special Trivia Bonus:* In 'By Any Other Name', Scotty gets the one Kelvin, and himself, smashed on booze. The bottle of "very very very oooold Scotch" he blows the dust off of, "ohhh, I was saving you for..." - yeh, that Scotch. The label, that can't be read during the scene, is for 'Wee Bairns Scotch'. That scotch makes other appearances, later in the Trek franchise such as DS9 for example. As a fan, you could get shots or a glass at 'Quark's Bar' at the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas - and chase it down with Klingon Ale while eating some Moogie's Pasta - shame the amazing STE has been gone for a while now! (Sorry kids, ur born too late. Then again, there's two standing painstakingly accurate Enterprise sets built true to the original blueprints to visit - One in upstate NY and also another in Georgia I believe).
*Stupid Trivia:* Stupid because they hired one of the staff's lawyers to play the Gorgon dude... yes, you were not imagining his lack of acting skills...
*Regarding the Episode:* In another script, Kirk and or Bones are flapping their jaws about how "these people haven't advanced in thousands of years!!!!!!".
    Dunt dunt dunnnnn!
Where Spock says something about them being happy and healthy and all that, like he did in 'The Apple'. Where Kirk and or Bones set out to break up that little paradise because, if humanoids don't have a stressful, screwed up never resolving society and culture, well than, screw that!
But, here, we get, "Ahhh, the Tahiti Syndrome.", Kirk laments.
And Hey! You called out a major hole in this plot - there is zero reason why they couldn't have left behind some crew to track down Kirk. In fact, it makes no sense whatsoever they did not - it's the Captain, fCs! It's not like they can't deflect the asteroid without everyone but Kirk, right? They could have left sooner, got there, deflected the thing without blowing up the Warp Drive, and returned a half hour later.
Dang. That kinda ruins the episode - suspension of disbelief, er, fan forgiveness, rather, saves it. ;)

"The Paradise Syndrome" was one of my sister's favorite episodes. As for episodes being predictable, to some extent, stories - like music - want you to engage in prediction. They want the audience to guess where things are going. That's part of the buy-in, the investment process. They want you to predict some things accurately, and then surprise you with others. The same with music. Music without predictability is just ... noise. Music that is totally predictable is boring. Same with storytelling. As for the second episode, evil does indeed enlist the aid of those who don't fully understand the nature of it or the consequences. We see this repeatedly in human affairs, and so many examples at the current time.

Did the indigenous peoples of North America have elastic? Hmmm...
Growing up, I always had a real soft spot for Miramanee. And living in a former Spanish colony, I saw the word "Miramonte" a lot. Not having seen subtitles or imdb until much later, I thought that was her name.
Speaking of confusing names, "Salish", the name of the antagonist, also identifies a language and several groups of indigenous peoples located in Washington state and British Columbia.
Looks like the Enterprise needs to be rescued to have its warp engine replaced AGAIN. It happened at least 3 times in season 1. (They were damaged beyond repair in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", imploded in "The Naked Time", and buckled in "Tomorrow is Yesterday".) No wonder Scotty was frustrated!
"And the Children Shall Lead" is one of my least favorite episodes, and like with so many other viewers it's due to the bratlings. And when they finally draw out the villain, he's a LAWYER! Melvin Belli represented Jack Ruby, who killed Lee Harvey Oswald (who was accused of killing JFK), and he was one of the lawyers (along with F. Lee Bailey) with whom the Zodiac killer of San Francisco demanded to speak over telephone and radio. He's also well known for representing consumers suing corporations in some high profile cases and is responsible for some fundamental concepts in consumer law.

The Preservers are an interesting idea. Whoever they were, they were moving endangered people to planets where they could thrive and possibly reach whatever their potential might be. Maybe on another Earthlike planet, there might be a colony of Neanderthals who have reached their space age, or other possibilities. It may also explain the sheer amount of humanoids they keep encountering on their travels.

My earlier statement was a little off. Gene Roddenberry was there at the beginning of the 3rd season but because of the bad timeslot he thought the network was out to kill his show and his heart was no longer in it.
Understand that Star Trek was actually cancelled after it's second season but a fan led letter writing campaign convinced or forced nbc to give it a third year.
Gene decided to personally produce the show again like he did in the first(and my opinion best)season.
But Gene was going to do it unless they gave Trek a good time slot. The Networks said they'd give him his choice of several good days and times.
So Gene got back on the horse and was planning year 3 to be the year yet.
Well guess what happened. The network told him he could have Friday nights at ten pm.
When StarTreks main viewers were kids who would in bed at that time and young people who would mostly be out on dates and stuff.
Gene Felt the show would be cancelled no matter what he did and took back his old position of executive producer and brought on new new guy to line-produce.
Then Paramount that just bought the desi-lu studios decided to save themself some money and slashed the budget.
The season started out pretty good but seemed to just run out of steam. Don't get me wrong. They're are still kick ass episodes coming down the pike(no pun intended). But with all the things working against the show I'm surprised it's as good as it is.
This is/was a show that was truly loved by its fans. How many shows come and go...no one talks about them. Really is anybody talking about nu-trek.
Here we are 55+ years after it's debut and alot of it still resonates.
Gene Roddenberry will achieve the impossible almost 20 years later and capture lightning in bottle a second time with Star Trek the next generation.
He will away sometime during its 3rd year I think.
Anyways am rabbling and me dog needs to 'do his thing's .
There's much more to StarTrek then just being a television show. It is true Americana through and through.im sure everyone enjoying your reactions agrees.
