TURBOFURNACE: SUDDEN DEATH

  • The main goal for this run was to test out the throttling mechanism, and I'm pleased to report that it worked flawlessly. It was easy to make fine adjustments to the throttle and it happily closed itself when I let go of the throttle handle. I had it hovering around 8 PSI for most of the run (although sadly we didn't get video of the pressure gauge.)
I wonder if the boost pressure would have went down if it had run for longer. I also wonder if having some distance from the machine, and wearing hearing protection as well, might have given me confidence to run it faster than I did in the last video, possibly leading to its untimely demise.
Overall it was a blast to play with this thing.
We obviously had a failure of the turbine wheel. Not sure exactly what happened here. At first we thought maybe we seized a bearing, but we had good oil pressure the whole time, and it easily spun again even while hot. Also, seized turbos tend to stop almost instantly, this one kind of spun down over almost half of a second.
The second theory is that it might have ate a piece of charred wood and shredded itself on that. The third is just that the turbo wheel got much hotter, much faster than the housing and it simply expanded until it was in contact with the housing. Either of the latter might explain the high pitched grinding noise in the last 10 seconds before it gave up.
Needless to say, I've got another identical turbo on order from eBay already. I'm excited to tear this broken one down and see what it looks like on the inside.
    Next priorities:
    - Some kind of filtering mechanism to prevent the turbo from ingesting fuel. The coolest idea we have is some kind of cyclone filter, but it might suffice to just stuff some kind of cheap steel mesh into the top of the burn chamber.
    - Ability to start it off of batteries. I have actually done some experiments on this a couple months back and did actually get it started using a fan from a hand-held vacuum cleaner and brushless motor from a remote control airplane, but it took forever and when I accidentally killed it there wasn't enough juice left over in the lead acid batteries to
start it again. Sadly, no video of that.
    - Finally, and perhaps most importantly, some kind of load or back pressure. Right now it looks like I'm going to be making a kind of combination nozzle and water tube steam boiler.
As always, we'll see what happens…

In real jet engines let cold air bypass the compressor to cool the turbine. You could do the same here and conect it to the throtle in some way so it lets more cool air pas to the turbine to keep it cool as it spins faster.

This is a fascinating experiment and I can actually see you trying to use this in place of say gas - like a glass blowers furnace, blacksmiths forge or some such. If the turbo could hold together for a prolonged period of time as well as method of adding more fuel (without significant pressure loss or sustained pressure loss).
It'd also be a good idea to monitor the oil temp, not just pressure as it might be boiling off or getting overly thin which might also explain the compressor stall.

Wood combustion generates a lot of soot. the high temperature makes this soot stick to the turbine blades, reducing aerodynamic efficiency, heat dissipation until melting.

You need two valves directing compressor air.
The valves need to be connected together via linkage.
They need to be connected so one is closed and the other is open.
One air valve needs to enter at the bottom near the fuel.
The other needs to enter the chamber near the top, but not all the way so any unburnt fuel has time to burn before it enters the turbine. (I recomend the bottom of the inlet 2 inches from the top)
You could hook the valve linkage to a pneumatic cylinder trying to close the burn air and have a spring trying to open the burn air.
As the air pressure increases it automatically adjusts the throttle to keep at a steady pressure

Your on the right path but may I make a couple of suggestions? Run the exhaust of the "turbofurnace" into a controlable Y-feed. One side to the turbine inlet and one to a bypass exhaust stack. Also if you run on waste oil through a controlable drip feed and a small pipe inlet for lighting you can cap that inlet with a simple pipe cap. Allowing you to keep your access door bolted tightly.

Also i wouldn't use a throttle on the inlet side of a turbo that doesn't have a carbon seal, the vacuum can pull the oil out of the bearings, at the very least just drawing the oil in to the combustion air. People who used turbos in draw-through carbed engines found this out as well.

    • @trcxsa

@@pico67ss isn't really a solution. It's more a case of the combustor not burning the fuel completely in the combustion chamber and causing high EGT's as a result.
It could be cause by multiple design issues with regard to airflow and hole spacing in the flame tube.
Put basically the fuel is burning outside the chamber instead of inside it.

    @turtlemann14 Před 3 lety +1

toooooo much heat on the turbine they are only good for about 1600*F. im sure the chunks of coals weren't all that great for it either. you need an air bypass to help cool the combustion going into the turbine inside the burning chamber. could also use a pneumatic cylinder on the butterfly valve using the pressure created to close the butterfly and a spring to hold it open, this would allow a governing effect.

Question is what RPM you are achieving and where is limit for turbine.

But I’d say if you had some sort of heat exchanger to a energy sink like a 50000 gallon swimming pool or a boiler on a steam vehicle, I’d say you could run that all day without melting the turbine blades.I see it’s been a while, Time to dig it out of the “well we done that” pile and see what you can do with it next!

Every one of these things is a death trap. They can fail and send shrapnel from literally every conceivable direction. Pressurized hoses full of oil can fail if they are soft lines such as these rubber hoses and spread fire and burn hazard liquid in any direction faster than you can react.
As a burn victim I can only think of what can go wrong when I see videos like this posted.
I'm sure it's great fun but I will always opt to view this in video format rather than in-person.

    Testimony of Jeremy Thomas Robbins:
When I was a young man I enjoyed what most young party going men liked, such as girls, beer and drugs. I would have sex with any girl, any time and anywhere. For so long I am not sure how many I have been with at this point. I had little to no morals nor cares about anything really. The only thing I held onto was my word as I was taught when I was a child, that a man is measured by his word and to keep your promises. So, IF I said I was going to do something, I did it no matter the cost. That being said, one night I awoke from my sleep. Sat up in my bed and vocally promised myself I was going to read the bible. Not sure why, to this day I still have no understanding as to why I made this my word. But I did, so I read.... and read and read more. Turns out the bible is a rather large book and it was taking me some time to do it. But I gave my word and I kept on reading it and as I read it the words where convicting my soul. I could feel something in my heart start to turn and became uneasy. Then one night, when I was asleep. I awoke to a presence in the hall at the end of my bed. I could see something was there but I was not able to see what it was. Then I heard a disgusting noise coming from it and I told it.
    You're disgusting!!
Then out of the silence, out of the darkness I heard.
    YOU ARE TO
    And it grabbed me.
Then I awoke not knowing I was in a dream as the entire dream was where I was and how I was. "Never had a dream like this before and never had another like it again."
The crazy part.... I still felt right where "IT" grabbed me, as if the tightness of its grip was still on me.
To say the least I have seen something that is not normal nor good. There are evil things in this world we can not explain nor understand but I know as true as the air in my lungs. Spirits are real and so is God.
    This is my testimony.
