What Happened To Old Spice Pure Sport Deodorant?

- Once upon a time this was the very best deodorant out there but just a few months ago they changed the formula and now its terrible. Please leave a comment if you have experienced the same thing as me.
*update 6/21/16* I found an awesome replacement that I have tested for several months and it is perfect. It is Degree Men Motion Sense Dry Spray - Sport Defense. This has been working perfectly for months. Can be bought online, or at Walmart, target, or Kmart, or other stores.
This is the first CZcams video that has affected me enough to cause comment. I completely agree with the video's creator and have sent my complaint to Old Spice.
Man I thought I was going nuts thinking "what they hell is this baby powder smell this isn't old spice" thanks for the video, I'm surprised there isn't more people disappointed with this. Wrote in to old spice as well and will be returning my pack to Costco. What were they thinking changing this, I can't believe their QA team smelled this and said "yep that's a winner right there".

Same experience. Used Pure Sport for years and only recently got my first batch of the thinly-scented new version which doesn't smell nearly as good as the old version. The old version smelled stronger, but that was not a bad thing. It seemed just right. I hope they bring back the old formula.
I noticed the same thing and am having the exact same issue as you, your story is a mirror of my own. it is clearly a new recipe it's a powdery pure sport now and i hate it!!
I completely agree! I didn't even realize the scent had changed much, HOWEVER, I began breaking out with severe rashes under my arms. Painful and ridiculously itchy, which had never happened in the past. I thought it was just ME, however after looking online I see there have been other cases. So disappointing because they HAD a great product. Now I can't find anything I like much. I've tried other variations of O.S. but I get the terrible itchy, burning rash back every time I start using their products again.
With you all the way man. Have used the same stuff for 10 years and I just went out and bought a new twin pack of what I thought was my same-old same-old, and suddenly it's nearly unwearable because of the awful scent. Found your video while trying to find out if this was intentional. No documentation anywhere! If they were gonna change it, they should at least have noted it on the packaging or made it a "new" scent! I don't know what I'm gonna do as a replacement.
I'm glad you made this video. I was laying in bed the other night after I just got out of the shower. and realized I smelled awful. I new right away my deodorant was not the same. This is a big deal for us guys because there's not A lot of choices of deodorant like there are for girls. I never liked anything better than old spice now I'm extremely upset.

Great vid, totally agree and felt the need to voice support. It's 2020 now, nothing has changed, and it's apparent that comments/concerns/pleas from the loyal customer base have fallen on deaf ears. Time to find something not made by P&G. : (
I've only been using Pure Sport for about a year, but when I opened up the new stick recently I IMMEDIATELY knew there was something off. I thought I was crazy or that my sense of smell had changed or something. I had my roommate come and smell it and compare it to an old one I had in a travel bag. He confirmed the same. I'm pissed because I bought 2 twin packs a few months ago and now It's probably too late to return them to the store (I don't even remember which store) and so I have to pitch them and find a new deodorant. Thank you for making this video though. Now I know it isn't just me.
I'm with you. As loyal as I am to Old Spice, I can't say their deodorants are great. I still use the body washes and soaps but I switched to Degree antiperspirant in my mid 20s when I realized Old Spice wasn't holding up.
Agree 100%. Thought I was going crazy. But glad too see it's not just me. Not going to buy a single stick of this anymore. The least they could do is make a Pure Sport classic, or something to that effect.
for me I first noticed the smell would wear off and I would need more. Then a few months ago I started having a terrible rash. Im glad im not the only guy that thinks the formula was changed :(
nic guild yeah I’m trying to figure out if it is the old spice deodorant (not antiperspirant) or if it’s pure sport. I wore it today at school and it went 4 hours before I could smell a little bit of bo through the smell. I sweat a bit, but the scent should probably last a little more than 4 hours. Do all of the blue non antiperspirant deodorants do this?
Just after making the below comments to your video, I left to go shopping and pick up an online order I made at a local variety discount chain called "Big Lots" and saw the old version on the shelves there! Snapped up three of them. You might try ordering it on Big Lots online...Good luck!
I wrote Old Spice as well. They wrote me back and said yes we changed it, and sent me some coupons. Unbelievable that they would change this scent. It was an incredible scent, and I was constantly being complimented by people about it. And now I have like 10 different deodorants from different brands which all suck compared to the old Pure Sport scent.

I've been using Pure Sport since the 90s and suddenly realized this just doesn't work any longer, so I googled "what happened to Pure Sport" and i ended up here. Pure Sport was so damn good there was no need for cologne, smh.

you are right,I've used old spice close to 30 years and my father many more years,our experience with the new old spice had an even worse affect on both my father and I,it gave us terrible rashes
I encountered the new formula today. I just finished sending an email to Old Spice complaining. Like you, I have used Pure Sport for over ten years and I am so incredibly pissed. I even dug my old one out of the trash to compare. The "new" one is embarrassingly bad.
I'm in the same boat, been using this since the 90s. I figure since they didn't make a grand announcement about a "New and Improved" formula, the new scent is the result of cost-cutting measures, and therefore unlikely to change back. As much as I dislike it, I'm simply going to vote with my wallet and find something new. I am surprised there's not more outrage about how Old Spice went about making this change though.
+Zachary Kulzer You got it. They most definitely changed it to save money -- they would have said something otherwise. I have a suspicion this is due to all the reports of chemical burns, but who knows. I've switched to Degree Men Arctic Edge. Smells great. Different, but great.
Something happened and it’s not good, I started using it in 2006 and it was great. Later I noticed the change in scent and thought that it’s a knock off. Happy to learn from you that procta and gamble messed up and my dilemma is now resolved. I can finally move on. Only problem is that I have to purchase many deodorants to figure out a perfect replacement.
Still looking for the original Old Spice High Endurance Pure Sport High Endurance. It was the only thing I packed in my gym bag, at home, and a spare one in the office... for years until 2015 or sometimes something changed. Ever since then the "new" formula just smells awful.
Hope the people in P&G find back their lost formula.

Same boat, been using exclusively since the 90s. Just opened a new pack today. Smell is different and cheap. My pits feel like they're burning as well which was never a problem before. I knew something was suspicious when I saw Pure Sport on clearance at the store back a few months ago. Guess time to find a new deodorant.
I just started using pure sport and it smells fine! How good the original pure sport was!
10 times better from the current one, old spice deluded the old formula they made it cheaper to cut costs and they didn’t tell the consumers about it.

I've noticed that over the months they seemed to have switched the formula again, it went from an ok scent, to a sour apple kind of smell.
Opened up a new deodorant I had sitting on the shelf for a few months and it smelled weird. I figured it went bad or something so I went to the store and bought a different one. I smelled it in the store and it smelled like what Pure Sport used to smell like so I bought it. Went home and used it and nope, new formula. Smells like baby products and doesn't work as well as the old formula. Googled it and your video was the first thing that came up. I'm going to write to P&G now.
Here I am all these years later still looking for another deodorant. I haven't used Old Spice since the formula was horribly changed and still haven't found a deodorant as good as the Pure Sport once was. Thanks Old Spice. I'm not sure why they think men want to smell like perfume and flowers.

The body spray went from 4.0 oz to 3.75 oz last I checked. Getting low on it. Hope the Body Spray version isn't effed too...
Old Spice Playmaker is pretty good if you like the antiperspirant (white solid). I'll have to try the "solid" version of Pure Sport because I've worn that enough times to know if it's changed. Thanks for the tip.

Since they started with their new ads the old spice scents hasn’t been the same old good ones
same exact thing happened to me with champion. it smells nothing like the old stuff. I even have an old one to compare to it. but every one smells the same. I miss it so much and I can't find any other deodorant or brand that satisfies me now
THANK YOU. I've been a loyal Pure Sport user for 15 years or so. There is definitely a noticeable difference in the scent. I think it smells like old lady perfume.. awful. If anybody finds a similar scent, let us know!

I started using the fresh scent version of old spice in the 90s too as I watched a news story on the link between aluminum and alzheimers. Now I make my own. Shea butter, charcoal, coconut oil, and magnesium hydroxide rather than irritating baking soda. Safe, natural, and good for you as long as you don't overdo the oil. Arrowhead powder or corn starch for thickening and beeswax if you want a solid to go in a stick, but I prefer the paste without beeswax
It was a great deo that didn't burn the pocket but unfortunately only get to use it once and the new ones are horrible plus it gave me itching.
What is Old spice thinking? I don't mind if they increase the price here.

It’s funny because I was thinking for years that it was just me. I noticed this right away (also I’m one of the people that gets burns from the new formula). I really wish they would change it back.

I started using Pure Sport about 10 years ago and it has been perfect for me. I kept buying too much and finally ran out a month ago, and when I got the new stuff, I find myself stinking after like 4-6 hours, and it's really annoying.
I don't mind the new smell. What I hate is that the new stuff doesn't keep my dry. The old formula kept me dry all day.

I used Pure Sport for over 20 years with no issues as well then... just a few years ago it started to give me a rash like a chemical burn. I agree with you for sure! It is trash now.
I read in forums that the Captain scent smells similar to the original Pure Sport.
I started using this stuff back in 2010 and i loved it ever since, i havent nessesarily noticed a change in scent, but rather it doesnt even last remotely as long as it used to. Before i would put it on in the morning, go to work, go to my night classes and play basketball and when i came back the smell was still as strong as it was in the morning. Now i need to reapply it every 5 hours and its annoying
Maybe removed or modified some ingredients because it continent something hazardous? But, I also noticed the change and was disappointed. I was a loyal customer, but now that it changed, I’ve been buying what’s cheap or on sale.
Yeah, i don't care about the size, all the companies do that, they reduce the size of the products. But yes, the stinking smell is huge issue. I can't remember how long i've been using it for - at least 15 years. And i also tried different ones. The pure sport was ideal.
Old Spice, this is not fair to the loyal customers. Loosing another one. Please bring the original formula back. I don't even mind paying little extra for it

It's terrible now. I can't stand the new smell. I used to get compliments on how good I smelled with the older one. I won't even use it now.
another thing ive noticed it feel greasier than the original stuff dosnt last as long there is definitly some different about it.
I totally agree I love the old stuff... I thought it smelled so good I wished they made a cologne out of it. the new stuff is total crap and doesn't last very long either.

I like the Old Spice classic Original Scent it smells really good
Somehow I didn't notice until 2022, but I've used it for 25 years, and I noticed the smell the other day was off, and at first I thought covid lol, but then i saw the "aluminum free" and got suspicious, and then I remembered when I was going through thr worst of puberty hormone sweat, this could get me through the day, when others couldn't, but I've noticed in recent years a strong sweat would break through, so yeah, very pissed, gonna find something new.
I had the burning once when I was maybe 14 which was the first time I tried it and never used old spice again.
Same thing, wrote them a letter. Threw away the sticks and shopping for a new brand.
My favorite was the amber scent but it did give me a slight burn to my skin
I used to wear the swagger scent for a while until I noticed the smell wasn’t the same. Unfortunately I believe the big corporations care about the money and not the product. They’ll go the cheap route.

While I *did* really like Pure Sport, most of why I ended up using Pure Sport exclusively for so many years was because, after trying countless other deodorants, it was the first and only one that didn't bother me at all.
Which brings me to Old Spice "Captain". And the same thing happened: after trying out *everything* from AXE and from Old Spice, etc, I found "Captain" (which just by pure chance to also happened be from Old Spice) that didn't bother me at all, with a pleasant, simple scent.
It smells more like Pure Sport than the rest, but I'm not going to say it smells a lot like it. But again, the fact that I've found another scent (out of the probably 40-50 that I've tried says quite a bit about it. You may not love it like the original Pure Sport, but I'd say there's a fair chance it might smell good to those who loved the old P.S.

The Body Spray is the bomb. Also, if you can find an old glass bottle of the Pure Sport aftershave, buy it. It's also wonderful.

I know I know I found swagger to be the closest fix for me good luck with the witch hunt. Swagger old spice seems to be pretty good. I have to get swagger at wall Mart only place with large old spice selection.
I think the next best scent after that one is the aqua reef unless they changed that one too

Absolutely! I came across your video while i was googling to see what happened. I used this stuff for 20 years, nothing was as good. JUST bought some more and its completely different! It doesnt smell anything like the old one. So...what the crap, why would you have the same name for a different scent? It smells bad. AND the old one lasted all day. One application in the morning lasted till the next morning. Now it doesnt last the whole day, have to reapply at evening. CHANGE IT BACK! NOW!!
Yep, me too. I've been using it forever, and a few months ago it stopped working. Now, I start to notice that I smell like BO about half way through the day. It really sucks. I would probably be better off just going without deodorant.
Martin Mullen I got one of the mini ones from the dollar store and it isn’t antiperspirant. It was a good deal don’t get me wrong, but I had higher expectations. I wore it to school today and I’m lucky I keep the stick in my backpack. 4 hours went by and I could smell my bo through it. It was perfect down the shore where there was a breeze and the weather wasn’t too bad, but in my hot school the stuff didn’t stand a chance. The smell isn’t the best, but it’s still a fresh, pleasant smell. I won’t wear it to school anymore. I guess I’ll just use it down the shore hahaha.
I just opened up a new twin pack yesterday, put some on and was like, wtf is that smell, this isn't pure sport. I opened up the other stick in the twin pack and the same nasty smell. It makes me think of the smell when a baby gets a new diaper on.
If they're going to change the smell, they need to let the public know, or at least call this deodorant something else because it isn't pure sport anymore. I don't think I'll buy any more old spice products after they pulled this off.
I'm in the same boat your in, I thought pure sport smelled better than other stuff by far, and have been using it for years. Now I'm stuck trying to find another product. This is really infuriating.
I've gone through the same thing.. I liked pure sport, but I have always been an original old spice guy. I work in manfufacuring... and that world has been messed up from young engineers with "great ideas" to make the company more money, just to come and go, they fuck a good thing up and leave, but the original scent has changed too. The aqua reef is my go to now, it holds all day through 12-16 hours of sweat and smells good as well, but nothing compared to the old, old spice

Had the same exact experience in 2015 when I finally found out they changed the formula from pure awesomeness to pure sh**. Still can't believe that a big company like Procter & Gamble after decades having an awesome product would change it to something so bad!

I'm on the same boat as well. I use SpeedStic now... The new Pure Sport's doesn't smell like anything to me anymore. I apply it, and I can't even smell it. Even after applying it heavy, still no good. I do three passes with the SpeedStic and it's Strong and lasts all day. Old Spice's quality is declining and they're too focuses on making foo foo scents that no one even likes...

I was thinking the same I switched to making my own homemade deodorant at this point it's much cheaper and better smell super good with all the essential oils I use
