After growing up near China Lake Naval Weapons Center in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Niceole escaped to the bright lights of Los Angeles. While studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she realized her true love was writing stories, not playing them out. She worked as a police dispatcher to pay her way through USC undergrad and then completed the Master of Professional Writing program, also at USC. An alum of the CBS Writers Mentoring Program, NBC's Writers on the Verge, and the WGAW Showrunner Training Program, Niceole has written on “Ironside,” “Allegiance,” “The Mysteries of Laura,” “Shades of Blue,” "Cloak & Dagger," “Fate: the Winx Saga,” “S.W.A.T,” and “Graymail.” She also co-wrote a feature, "The Banker," with former “Allegiance” showrunner and director George Nolfi, available on AppleTV+, and is now writing “Spark,” a film inspired by the life of Claudette Colvin. Niceole is currently a co-executive producer on an upcoming Netflix series and has several TV and feature projects in development. Her first book, “The Writers’ Room Survival Guide,” will be released in October of this year.

    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

None. Like art, who can teach it? It comes from the soul!

@@cindytucker5139 I'm a professional interdisciplinary artist in my 60s who is both academically/formally trained and self taught in the different genres I work in.. What you wrote in response/perspective to questions is absolutely incorrect.
The reason it's incorrect is every human on this planet has to learn from others. You weren't born knowing how to use a spoon or to walk, use the bathroom and other life skills/behaviors let alone how to paint, write/read or film making, dance... especially professionally.
Having lived a and worked professionally as long as I have, any human who thinks they are above learning from others - especially in the creative fields not only has a lot to [still] learn might as well get in the dirt now. They're done with life.
I teach in my creative genres and still wake up every day wanting/needing to learn more and new things...
Also Warhol didn't actually always paint his works. Many were silkscreens and/or executed by his studio assistants. He often only signed them...
Just because a person has a creative ability and/or passion doesn't mean they automatically know how to evolve it or how to be successful. You have a lot to learn about what art is, what makes an "artist" and that "real" artists are (and should) constantly learning from others.
More to the point, if you have nothing to learn and already know everything, why are you here? Just saying...

I have questions. I'm not a writer, I am an artist. I was set to become some big deal in 2020. I had just come out of my shell in 2018, joined a League and I remember my husband say, Ha you got drunk and joined that League, you'll back out!
While being driven to my first meeting, I looked back and saw my old self and waved goodbye to her. She took a swig of vodka and went back inside!
I excelled until the beer virus hit. People put limes in coconuts instead of Corona beers.
I have spent since then thinking of a story. Staying home. I just started writing this last month.
Do you have to be a great writer to submit a story? If the story is good, and they want to use it, can they help with stuff? How do you write a script? How is it different than a book? Is there a way to keep people from stealing your ideas? (Not that they could if they tried, but who knows, google history?)

Take a writing class if you're not good. Not a lot of professionals want to spend time helping you learn. Protect script with copyright. Ideas can't be protected, but the execution can

I'm a professional writer with 24 years in the biz. I've worked on many TV show. So feel free to take my advice or not. U don't need to be a great writer to write. Its really more who u know. But u still need to be able to write a script. U cant really submit a story to anyone who works at a company. To protect u and them, they won't usually want to see you work. That's pretty much what agents are for. Agents almost have no value unless you are in the top tier. But they can get your material out. If u wanna learn how to write a script the best way is to read them. There's plenty of sites online that u can read full script. Just read a couple to see how they work. To write them u most likely should buy a screenwriting software like final draft. It kinda does all the formatting for u.
Basically to be a writer u just need to write. And finish script. It just takes time. Your first 2 or so script will most likely be awesome when u are done. But suck in hindsight.
The real key to success is to just write and to network. I was lucky I had written one script (terrible in hindsight) and I got into this school called the Canadian Film Centre, they only take 10 students a year. So its kind of a big deal. I didn't really learn that much there. But I made friends with the other 9 students. And that's pretty much how I was able to get my first jobs from them, when they got lucky and got their jobs.
If u write some script u should try to get into the AFI or Canadian film centre. I normally don;'t think university is useful. But if u can get into USC or UCLA film program. Maybe you'll learn something. maybe not. But u will be in classes with the sons and daughters of hollywood elites and like I said, its who u know.
As for copywrite issues. Its kind of pointless to bother really. I've had stuff stolen from me. But if that happens your options are to sue or do nothing. If u sue, u better win millions of dollars, because you'll never work in hollywood again.
Oh and there are also tons of other programs and writing contest. U could look into them. But the first steps are to write like 2 scripts. And its easier I think to get into tv just because there way more tv than movies being made.. hope that helps

For all the men out there, if you want to have any chance in this skewed "gender parity" world, write with women themes in mind and declare yourself gender neutral or a woman when applying for jobs. There is probably an 8-to-2 ratio of men to women writers out there and, on top of that, the inverse is true for hiring, they are only hiring women and LGBTQ+ people.
