    Stuff we use:
    CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    The problem with all this advice is that she's saying you need to do things that are totally unique, captivating, take big risks and etc. But 90% of the shows and movies out there are doing the exact opposite. Hollywood is more formulaic and predictable than ever. So clearly these people writing formulaic procedurals with the trope protagonist are getting hired. That's what most of prime time TV is, so is it any wonder that people are emulating that with their specs? This also goes into her comment about not writing for a "crowd pleaser" show. So in other words, we're not suppose to write for what's popular? And I'm sorry, most of the shows out today which people considered "layered" can't hold a candle to something like The West Wing or The Good Wife. But both those shows are no longer airing. Instead, we have junk like Scandal and Madam President. Shows I don't even want to watch, let alone write a spec for.
    Also, I've written specs for the CBS program. If they don't want people writing specs for series older than 2-3 seasons, why do they have Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons on their acceptance list?

    • @prigg88
      @prigg88 Před 5 lety +6

      You are talking about shows like Scandal not being unique or taking risks when at least Scandal does take risks - it had the lead have an affair with the President which was seen as edgy when Shonda was trying to get it made.
      The thing is with a procedural, the point is: yes procedurals are formulaic, but what separates your procedural out from the pack.

      I know this comment is years old but as far as I know you just write the pilot until a company/broadcaster is on board as they'll want to change everything to adapt to audience analytics/expectations anyway. Have your world and characters built, know your core theme, know what motivates the characters, and make it clear you have more stories in you to continue writing the whole series

      Shes actually more important than being a writer shes the one who decides if that piece of paper you work on is ever going to become what its meant to be: A visual story. Writers are just one part of the process, sure we are the beginning and in some ways the most important part but our script as brilliant as it could be is just a script unless someone like her is willing to take a chance on it and put her reputation on the line for you to have a chance to live your dream. Maybe the process isnt the most creatively stimulating but that the business were in. If you dont like it write a novel or something that isnt a visual medium but dont come here bitching about "why is she giving out advice?" when critiquing writing is her damn job you sound foolish and whiny.
