- Andy Price visits the Pendon Museum at Long Wittenham, where work is progressing on an extraordinarily ambitious project to painstakingly recreate the Vale of the White Horse - as it looked in the 1930s - in miniature.
Andy speaks with Roye England, the founder of the Pendon Museum, about the techniques he uses to ensure the model is as accurate as possible, and the likely timescale for completing this unique diorama.
This clip is from It's A Small World, originally broadcast 28 August, 1975.

I love the story about how nice everyone was to him when he asked to photograph their house
It is very local to me and still open. Some buildings have lights inside, and they can run the trains as if at dusk by dimming the main overhead lighting. Modellers are always required, but they have exacting standards, and test you with a small outhouse or privy first!
I wonder if this is still around today , it deserves to with all that work .
Edit : I’ve just checked , it’s still there and this model looks absolutely fantastic
Very pleased to read this museum is still going strong today.
This model railway still exists, it’s much bigger, and has its own YT channel.
I’ve seen hundreds of exhibition layouts and Pendon is easily the best.
Can you provide a link or the name of said channel?
@@oooBASTIooosearch for Pendon Museum on CZcams and you'll find lots of videos on the model village

Every time the pencil emerged to menace the model I momentarily felt like I was watching a 1950's horror film; 'Attack of the Gigantic Pencils'!
That is an absolutely astonishing model. I can't believe someone invested so much time into making this. This has GOT TO BE more of a labor of love than just a job. The meticulous craftsmanship down to every last little thing is a work of art, not to mention the skill and imagination it took. BRAVO or BRAVA as the case may be. WOW!!!😁💜
I remember Andy Price when he was on the Six O'Clock Show on London Weekend TV in the 80's. I've been to Pendon twice. The railways is a very accurate representation of the prototype in EM Gauge.
The twelve year old boy who made the barn model turned 60 this year!
What a touching presentation. Thank you for sharing it. Perhaps one day I'll visit the museum as I've just read that it is still doing away quite dandy. What a bunch of talented and dedicated souls. Brilliant.
Astounding and so beautiful built with such mastery! Incredible! Thank you!❤
Fantastic I miss this time when life seemed simpler and the focus on art/craft was not so rushed amazing
VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL MODEL!!🙂🙂👍👁️
This is unreal 😮
What a bloody legend
As Roye said, and like any model railway, it will never be finished!
People who play 'Bolt Action' by Warlord Games will love this.
Man kann nur ein Wort sagen. TRAUMHAFT
I'm waiting for Postman Pat in his van to gently bimble on through the scene.
Sadly, here we have another clickbait title used - "astonishing", when that word is not actually used in the footage.
The word used is Ambitious.
There really is nothing astonishing about it.
It would be astonishing if a tiny volcano erupted in the model village and tiny people ran out of the buildings as they all caught fire.
That would indeed be astonishing.
No model village anywhere, ever, has been astonishing.
Then you knew it was clickbait before clicking, thus for you at least, it wasn't clickbait.
Absolutely agree about Postman Pat
I think you have forgotten that 'astonishing' is not an objective fact, but a subjective opinion. Your opinion is not representative of all people's opinion, as some people may find this model village astonishing. The work, time, creative use of materials, enormity of the project and dedication to create detailed realism, to some people, is indeed astonishing. Therefore the title is not clickbait.
Blimey Matthew i bet you get invited to a lot of parties Mr pedantic.
It would be astonishing if you did.
@@Ridersonthestorm8899 Sir, I salute you.
I detest those pedantic buggers!

Incredibly inane and inapt comment.
