A Love so Big

  • This video shows how "Uiltjie" my Spotted Eagle Owl brings small rodents to Tiny, my little scops owl. In the wild, Spotted Eagle Owls will prey on smaller owls like the Scops Owl and therefore I never allowed Uiltjie to have contact with Tiny unless I personally supervised it. Deep in my heart I know that Uiltjie would never harm him, but he is a wild animal and it would be irresponsible of me to take unnecessary chances. One grab with his huge talons would crush the life out of Tiny's little body. Therefor you will see that whenever he brings a rodent to Tiny I always took him in my cupped hands and took the rodent from Uiltjie in such a way that he thought that it was the little Scops taking it. Tiny obviously do not like to be held like this, but I really was not prepared to take a chance with his life, because I love him to much. What is quite amazing is that apparently Uiltjie knew that he had to bring small rodents like these tiny shrews to Tiny. He never brought larger rodents like large mice and rats to him, but fed that to the larger Spotted Eagle Owlets under his care. Maybe owls really are as wise as they say. What is even more amazing is that, even if he had orphans to take care of, he would always think of Tiny and bring him a tiny mouse whenever he managed to catch one. I wonder what he thought of this little owl that did not want to grow up? Can love be "bigger" than this, taking care of your child that never grows up.

That's something very special you get to witness every day. I dare say I cried. Uiltjie seems to have an affinity for Tiny. And perhaps he does think of him as an owlet; he's already caring for a brood of owlets, after all, and his mind probably doesn't differentiate Tiny from them. It's so sweet of him to make the effort to catch extra food for Tiny. It warms my heart.

0:13 - You seem to have left Uiltjie with Tiny unsupervised here. I take it you trust him enough for this?
I think it's amazing that Uiltjie knows the size of rodent to bring to Tiny, including how Tiny isn't afraid of him. I take it that if you gave him a very young owlet to deal with, Uiltjie would know how to cut the meat into very small pieces and feed the owlet mouth-to-mouth.
Maybe Uiltjie really does think Tiny is an owlet who doesn't want to grow up (though it's possible that he has no idea that Tiny won't "grow up" to be an owl Uiltjie's size). Would you please seriously consider looking into having Uiltjie's brain scanned and his body checked out to see just what is driving him to be a surrogate parent to all these unrelated birds?

It can't hurt to double check Uiltjie's health, but the behavior of foster parenting is also very common among raptors. This caring trait is used at numerous raptor rehabilitation centers around the world.
While in some species female owls normally do the feeding, male owls in captivity can also feed chicks and teach them to hunt. This caring nature may be partly due to raptors' natural traits, and it may be partly due to living in captivity. It's not uncommon for captive animals to show intra and inter-species altruism. Altruism and imprinting could explain the affection Uiltjie shows for his non-owl friends/family. In any case, he is a very fascinating bird!

Every single time these fish and game agencies, or people in general, find one of these birds of prey outside and they aren't moving around much. They are starving.

what ever you guys are doing it seems to Work . :) owls are Special . me mum love owls . has statues all over her aparment.
Anyhoo, i saw a video today or day before. with owls (you guessd it ) and there where 3-4 baby owls. and they where Not fighting for the Food, some baby´s where older and much bigger than the youngest , and they did not Take the food away from the smallest one. Fucking intresting to watch . they let the smallest one have a whole mouse on its own. (it kinda seemd like the Baby owl was choking, and the mum owl even started to poke the Baby owl) Took the little fucker a long time to swallow (kinda seemd like the mouse where 1/3 of the size of the Tiny owl) and the Siblings where atleast half the size Bigger than the small one
