For the fungus gnats, us the yellow sticky pad. They are attracted to the color. That will catch just the adults, babies live in the soil. Thanks for the fish content.

For the fungus gnats along with yellow sticky tape , bug zapper I got nematodes from Aribico organics and you mix them with water and pour them in the plants . It works amazing ! The nematodes eat the larvae in the soil . That’s the best but nematodes are expensive , but if you’re desperate they work amazing !

It is interesting that the Marina brand (Hagen) filters have all the features that the experts want…self-priming, significantly adjustable flow, ability to swap media with what makes sense for the aquarium, quiet operation, and they are 1/3 the cost of a Tidal and half the cost of an AquaClear…but no one seems to talk about them.
I found out about them on the Pimp My Filter series…and see that they are often returned on Amazon for all the same reasons I see for AC and other filters.
They are slim, but I think they can be modified easily to route flow better.
I have two coming, so will see if they are legit…or bombs.

If you still have a problem with any fungas gnats after you do the sand around the plant trick, get a little container, put apple cider vinegar, a shot of dishwashing detergent and a bit of water. Let it sit out uncovered, flys will be attacked to it and drown. Kind of smells bad, but works on those little buggers lol

For killing fungus gnats, you might like the "Katchy." It's an electric bug catcher, but it's NOT a zapper.
It's a bit spendy, but it's silent, and gives off a cool blue glow. Best used in the dark.
    Amazon has it, of course!

I noticed others suggesting apple cider vinegar for the mold gnats. Both me and my mom have had better luck using balsamic vinegar, with a bit of dish soap. The sweet scent entices them, while the dish soap prevents them from escaping. plastic water/soda bottles work great for this.😺

Saw part of your live. It was great👍. Enjoyed the movie quotes. Great answers to the fishkeeping questions. For your knat problem take a small glass, fill 1/4 of the glass up with Apple Cider Vinegar, then add about 2 drops of Dawn dish soap to the surface. Cover tightly with plastic wrap. Place a rubber band around the plastic wrap so the wrap is taunt. Then poke some holes in the wrap with a toothpick or fork. Set the glass on a table. Within 24 to 48 hours you will find lots of knats in the glass. The vinegar will attract them. They climb in the holes. The dish soap keeps them from breaking the surface an getting out. I have done this in my old apartment, and two homes of my clients. It works! Also the aquarium rock on the soil is great. You will be knat free in no time!

I run 5 Kessil 360x on a 240 and it looks fantastic. Another approach for shimmer would be to use a gyre wave maker from RedSea. I bought the gyre pumps for all of my tanks for the nutrient export effect. It sends a sheet of water across the tank instead of a stream of water most pumps do. They are placed at the top of the tank, The side effect I noticed the tanks was a shimmer very close to that of the reef tank with the kessils. The pumps will triple the surface of the water so when your light shines through the ripples it gives a really nice shimmer effect. I have them on two 240G, one 90g, and one 75g.

With most hang on back and internal filters using cartridges. The cartridges usually are made up of carbon sandwiched in between two filter floss. Then followed by a course sponge at the end. Why are canister filters so different? With the course sponge filter first. Its said that its to prevent the fine sponge or floss to clog too fast. Then why are hang on backs and internal filters different? On them its labeled as bio sponge for beneficial bacteria. But in canisters its labeled for mechanical filtration. Even though the course sponge on both is the same sponge material. Hope this makes sense.
I like to use sponge filters with a battery powered aerator for portable filtration and backup for power outages.
I like to use hang on back filters for overall simplicity.
I like to use canister filters for its customizing options.
I like to use sumps on really big tanks.

At about 37:40 you’re talking about no-see-ums, you are probably experiencing fungus gnats. They can live in your potting soil. A possible solution is to add carnivorous plants, like sundews to your plant collection. That also adds potential video content.

Not sure if you will see this guestion after the video but here goes: I put a Seachem Tidal 35 HOB on my 20 gallon tank. This is no extension tube included with this product. How do you not get ammonia spikes following weekly filter maintenance? I've been washing my filter sponge in tank water too just to be extra safe, but still following weekly water changes I'm getting ammonia spikes. My 36 gallon has been set up since October so it should have some good nitrifying bacteria established but following water changes I get ammonia readings :/
