I know this might sound like a weird pick, but for me THE Terra moment, is the one where he BECOMES the lingering will. Terranorts Quote "Your body submits, Your Heart succumbs so why does your mind RESIST?" Followed by the music kicking in and seeing Terras armor RISE just tingles my brain in a certain way.
My favorite scene in the entire series. Nevermind Kingdom Hearts, or videogames in general, "Your body submits, your heart succumbs, so why does your mind RESIST?!" is just top-tier writing PERIOD.
@@edmg7 True, but I feel like that is perfectly Terra, while he had messed up and ended up losing his body, he still has his strength of will to try and fight against his mistakes, it doesn't even appear like the Lingering Will is trying to regain his body, he just wants to stop Terranort as he knows that it is his responsibility.
I'm sorry Pat, but the best Donald & Goofy moment in KH3 is definitively when they called out to Sora through my Dualshock 4's speaker. That might actually just be the peak moment of the series actually.

So as someone who’s favorite character switched from Roxas to Ventus, I feel like I may be able to illuminate some aspects of our pure boy that may make him stand out. As you stated, Ven is a light. And this is not just some KH lore distinction. He brings smiles and good vibes everywhere he goes. Take a look at his interactions with the princesses, for example. Aqua is delegated to prince duties in those interactions, but Ven is arguably there for them at their lowest point, the point where they’re most likely to give in. There’s some room for argument like Terra arguably sees Cinderella at her lowest, but Ven saw her completely disillusioned by her stepmother’s plan to keep her busy, and got to immediately be the light, the positive force, that helped her get to the ball at all. Aqua may give the girls a happy ending, but Ven gives them hope. As it’s been pointed out, he’s also debatably a better friend maker than Sora. You echo the “Call me Ven” line in the video, but don’t seem to get why it’s echoed. The full line is “My friends call me Ven.” He’s sending an open invitation to everyone he meets that he is one Ven-call away from Friendship City. And you know what? It works! He easily gets into the good graces of every good natured character he comes across. And there is something endearing about that, even if it’s not your particular vibe. In this same vain, I also like Ven’s empathy. I immediately think of him connecting with Snow White or Aurora. Without words, Aurora felt that she could trust him enough to show why her heart is so important to her. And that’s enough for Ven to devote himself to getting it back. And with Snow White, his first impulse was to console her. I feel like even Sora is prone to getting their new friend out of immediate danger before having a real emotional conversation with them. But Ven, either due to his naivety or empathy, takes a moment to console Snow White in the middle of an Unversed infested forest. And I think that speaks wholeheartedly to what Ven is about.
Ventus is a bright eyed kid like Sora, but one who doesn't even have the cute little shadow from KH1 inside him. A guy who's never just being a dick, a guy who's never being any more petty than a little church boy, he's just doing his best and trying to make friends. It's a little dry, but he's the most honest guy you'll ever know, and the best friend you'll ever have. And don't mess with his friends, because that's about the only thing that'll really set him off.
Imo, the best Ven scene is after the trio fight in Radiant Guardian. Ven's defining unique trait is to me, being the kid. Repeatedly, everyone treats him like a kid and he acts like one often too. The way he chases after Terra and Aqua recklessly, the way he screws around, the way the others (especially Aqua) treat him like a little brother... Him inviting Terra and Aqua to Disney Town, and then pouting over "two adults" entirely says that. And whilst I said that Ven's defining trait was being a kid that doesn't mean he's emotionally unintelligent or even stupid. Kind of the opposite. And as the two argue Ven can't do anything but sit powerlessly as his family tears itself apart. Even when he thinks he knows better.
I was laughing really hard throughout your description of Mickey's thing during ReMind basically being the climax of MGS4. I'd had the thought before but the way you put it just left me in stitches.
I did not expect Namine’s best Manga moment to be her crucifixion, I was convinced that it was going to be the time she was hiding and wearing a little army helmet XD
The scene of Sora bowing to Saix has some extra sting for the Japanese crowd, as bowing to that extreme degree is body language for 'I'll do whatever you want'. However, Sora jumping up from it so fast could be taken as a sign he didn't fully mean it, too, so there's a lot of good subtext to chew on.
30:28 worth noting that in the manga, this scene was changed from child abuse to Lexaeus discussing what a heart is with Roxas (while also failing at a chainlink puzzle, pretty cute)
Honestly with how stiff some of the characters move, I just love the scene with Demyx and Vexen in 3 and how they are going back and forth with each other. Not just standing there, blankly staring at each other while their mouths move. You can see the two being defensive, Demyx's expressions showing destain. Its small but I really found it great.
If you can guess by my username, I've had a chronic illness for my entire life. This makes Naminé my favorite character. I liked her status as a remorseful manipulator in CoM, but it's her evolution in the series that has made me love her. She reminds me of my favorite nurses. A person who is giving you bad news, and trying to help you through something difficult, and be a friendly face during the whole thing. It's hard for me to pick a definitive favorite moment, but I can say that her conversations with Xion demonstrate this the best.
god your ability to talk for over an hour at a time and still make me go back and rewind frequently because i missed what you said because i was still laughing at the last thing you said, still wishing it could be longer is astounding. thank you for taking the time to make all these! i love them and its fun to hear your thoughts! as for Ven: to me, his defining trait that makes him stand out from roxas and sora is basically loneliness/yearning for friendship to the point that it's at times his biggest flaw. his whole thing in KHuX was wanting friends so badly that it allowed the darkness to control him into doing a murder so he could be friends with the other dandelions haha. and then all through BBS we see him relentlessly chasing terra at first, and then switching to running around worlds basically just trying to make friends. it's like he can't tolerate being on his own. sora has his whole 'my friends are always with me' thing, but it doesn't feel like a point of insecurity like it is for ven. and roxas - while absolutely loving his friends - also has the ability to walk away from friends when the cons of a relationship/situation outweigh the pros of staying with them (which was always a trait about roxas i found distinct and interesting in the "friends are the most important thing" series). just my two cents on the ven nuance! but i also very much agree with you that he could stand to have more defining traits, and that his embodiment of light thing will probably be a bigger deal growing forward :p (also i was emphatically shouting "yes exactly!" to basically every tiny thing you said during roxas and xion's sections haha. gotta love a good tragedy character)
Personally, the Xion moment I first think of his her speech right *before* her big battle with Roxas. Before anything else, the two are friends, and in her final act of compassion she shared a quiet moment with him on the clock tower. But she knows, better than anyone, that this has to end. So she explains as best she can why, and forces Roxas to fight for his life. I realize I’m leaning more into “favorite” territory here, but that scene on top of the clock tower will always be more impactful to me than the scene at its base. It’s the one scene that’s stuck with me the longest since I first started this journey.
My honorable mention choice for Riku is definitely the end of Re:CoM, where DiZ gives him the choice between two paths, mans picks the middle like a chad, prompting DiZ to ask "The Twilight path to Nightfall?" and Riku countering with a more hopeful and accurate "No. ...It's the Road to Dawn." I wrote this purely out of memory. But despite DDD definitely being HIS game, this moment came to mind first.
Imo, Eraqus told Terra to take care of them not because he was the most cappable (phisically, he is), but because of how much bagage Aqua has herself. Terra has his fair share, but it's still, less, in that scene, Eraqus was, sorta, giving Aqua a shoulder to cry on, someone to rest, who would be better at that task than his own older step-son?
Pat I hate to be all sentimental and shit, and I don't even know if you're gonna read this comment or not, but your videos give me life. I'm not suicidal or anything (God forbid), but watching your videos just brightens up my day and lifts my mood. Growing up I was majorly obsessed with Kingdom Hearts, but the worst part is I felt like I was the only one. Knowing that not only someone shares the same interests as me but also gives a big enough damn to make eye-opening and bordering-on-philosophical content for my favorite game is really comforting. Keep doing what you do!

A few I also thought of that you didn’t mention: -When Mickey in COM first saved Riku and talked to him when he was all fuzzy, assuring Riku that he’d always be with him! A great proper introduction for the mouse -Riku also COM at the end when he chooses to walk the way to dawn -Kairi writing the letter to Sora at the beginning of KH2 -When Namine fist appears and talks to Roxas in KH2. I think that gets at her background but also mysterious and intriguing nature as well as her (ironically) caring heart looking for connection -Also, Vexen in KH3 saying “is that all they meant by a heart” is crazy lol -Saix expressing his jealousy to Axel in Days gets at his calloused nature but also hints at his later arc to reconcile -Also, if you didn’t know about Luxord’s name, it might have something to do with the correct pronunciation of the Latin lux (that is, of course, light, pronounced “loox”), I think there’s been some inconsistencies about this in the series, and idk if that’s actually what’s going on with Luxord’s name, but I promise that is how you’re supposed to pronounce lux -Roxas charging towards the castle with sorrow, rage, and abandon only to be stopped by Riku trying to talk sense into him and having an epic emotionally charged (for both parties) battle goes so hard and is so iconic -Pete being rescued by Maleficent in BBS helps his character make a lot of sense I think, and, of course, is very indicative of the dynamics between the two of them -When Xehanort, in KH3, said “one sky one destiny” before a crazy boss battle I was losing it, I really felt like I was fighting a crazy dark lord master (also when he clapped the Wayfinder trio lol) -Vanitus at the end of BBB when you defeat him and then he reveals to Ventus that the unversed come from him, and we also get that face reveal! Lol -When Terra stands up to Eraqus to protect Ven only to fall into Xehanort’s plot by being impulsive and too filled with passion -When Aqua saves Terra. Definitely the crux point of her whole character
My favorite "Roxas" moment is in Re:coded during the last conversation before his fight where he talks about hurt to Data Sora and promptly lashes out at Sora. By far the most emotional I've gotten for him. My favorite actual Roxas moment would have to be Xion's death or when he begs Axel to tell him the truth right before he leaves the Organization XIII
Dear Pat, I think that this might be my favorite thing you’ve ever done. And I say that as a massive fan of all your content. The way that you, in fulfilling the mandate stated in the title of this video, also both contextualize and synopsize each character’s role in the series in general is a masterful feat of writing. Absolutely brilliant! Also, I know that this will probably get lost in the pile, but I hope you at least see this at some point: thank you so, so much for all the wonderful content you take the time and effort to make and share with us, and for being such a beacon of relentless positivity. There are a select few channels that I would happily watch/recommend based purely on the good vibes and love that you put out into the world, and you are absolutely one of the foremost on that list. In what feels like an ever colder and more cynical reality, it’s people like you who remind me of all the good things in life, and I can’t fully express how grateful I am for that. The care and attention which you put into all your work is amazing; it makes me want to be a better writer, and a better creator. The love you have for these games and the worlds they create for us to enjoy is so plain to see in everything you craft. This is starting to run a bit overlong, so I’ll wrap this up with a curiously apt quote from Matthew Stover: “The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back. Aqua is a bit stuffy, but she has that big sister energy that makes it hard to hate her, even if it's easy to get annoyed by her. She worries about everything, tries to make everything right, and takes everything too seriously... but screw with her friends, and she's got a pocket full of Mean Girls on standby.
Mickey vs. Replica Xehanorts is the go-to example of what I love about Kingdom Hearts. If this were any other franchise, they would undercut this moment with a joke. Sonic the Hedgehog would have a wisecrack line about how cool he is, or some Marvel hero would point out how silly it is that they're doing this. But Kingdom Hearts? It put Mickey Mouse in an epic scenario and TREATED IT like an epic scenario. The silliness of the whole concept isn't lost on KH and I respect it so damn much for tackling it with 100% earnest. Epic Mickey. Epic f*ucking Mickey.
My favorite scene from KH3 is actually Jack Sparrow’s and Sora’s conversation at the tail end of the Caribbean world, where Sora talks about how one day isn’t enough time referring to Will’s situation and Jack reassures him telling Sora hearts always have enough time to say what’s true and that he should know better than anyone, this is what I think Kingdom Hearts is, just watching Sora grow and do what he does best and connect with people, i think this is a pretty good contender for both Sora and Jack moment
For Ventus I would actually go with his talk with Vanitas in Destiny Islands (idk if that's cheating cause it's listed as 3 scenes but whatever). I think it's a perfect reflection of Ven's true character arc which is losing his innocence and free will to fit with Destiny, from the start he's just a little kid that wants to get strong like his friends and wants to explore the worlds but can't because of this huge responsibility, unlike Sora and Roxas, Ven doesn't try to fight destiny or to reshape it, he just wants to run away which is why all of his main worlds are just him chilling with Disney characters for 90% of the time, but it's the fight with his master and the talk with Vanitas that breaks him, he wants to have the courage to change destiny by not fighting, but he simply can't. he's always been like this: destined to play a mayor role in life as either a vessel for light or darkness, and is this scene when Ventus realizes it's sadly impossible to deny destiny so he goes with Vanitas' plan anyways. This cutscene is a representation of how his fate was set in stone thoundsands of years ago and as much as he wants to, he can't do anything to stop it...
Kairi knowing that she's not ready for it, no matter how much she wants to go with, is a big moment, IMO. Sometimes, maturity isn't knowing when you're ready, but knowing when you're NOT ready.
Vanitas as an Always Sunny character is such a great image. Time to see if HJO has a cameo so I can get him to say "Dee, you bitch" in Vanitas voice lol.
It was so fun to relieve the series through this video. Your witty quips are amazing. And as for Terra, rather than "hype" the word that comes to mind for me is "himbo."

Great choice for Terra it would’ve been between that or his confrontation to Erauqs. The line “you may be my master but I will not let you hurt my friend” with his theme is a chefs kiss and one of the only cutscenes I don’t skip when replaying the game
I think Terra is my 2nd favorite KH Character...because I identify with him a lot. I've never been possessed by an old man or anything like that. But like...we've all made mistakes. We've all done things that we look back on and regret. Some folks get out of it easier than others but Terra really went through the ringer...and he never gave up. When he was tricked by Master Xehanort, when his body was stolen, when his friends were scattered, he was still around, fighting the good fight and trying to make it right. And eventually, all that hard work paid off. There was a time where I hated Terra but now...well, he's one of the favorites...Aqua is still best girl though.
48:57--49:19 damn mr. regularpat, you genuinely made me tear up over this scene again. like watching it is already gutwrenching with the context, but you putting it all into words, laying out just how terrifying and massively depressing Xion's fate was.... there are reasons why this game altered my brain chemistry as a child [first KH game, weeeeee!] and why i recently bought this game a second time when i thought i lost my original DS cartridge.

I mean I dunno, Young Xehanort had some pretty strong scenes. In particular, I think the moment in DDD where he defies Mickey's Stopza spell and casually whips out a keyblade is a great moment. Like Mickey almost saved the day here, he swooped in and froze everything before anybody could even blink, but then Young Xehanort throws a complete keyblade shaped spanner in the works. Up to this point, I don't think anybody even saw that he was capable of wielding a keyblade at that age, he certainly wasn't doing it in the Mysterious Figure boss fight. This is who Xehanort is. An evil dirty asshole with tremendous amounts of foresight and cunning. It honestly seems like he was deliberately avoiding using the keyblade up until now specifically in case somebody comes in and tries to use time magic only to find that it didn't work on him and now the attacker is low on MP. It's perfect, defining even.
Every time there’s a new Regular Pat I thank god. Both for having a wonderful new KH video, and for the fact that said video hasn’t sniped the KH Topic that I’ve spent months working on.
You dont seem to know it, since you were confused about what Vanitas actually wants, but it was in the bbs novel, which revealed his proper actual backstory in some too graphic and mature moments for the games (vomit and child beating and abuse), which is "he is constantly in pain from having a broken heart, any time unversed are killed Vanitas feels all of it, Xehanort actively physically and emotionally abused him to get him to get stronger, he wanted to make the xblade to stop hurting as Xehanort told him was the only way to do so", so a very elaborate suicide attempt from his pov, all of this explaining why he acts the way he does and his contempt towards everyone, Xehanort and Ventus primarily, with the xblade shattering having us see a glimpse of vanitas under his mask of venomous confidence and at his deep fear below it. Dark road and kh3 dialogue point out to this backstory too implicitly, showing him actively sacrificing himself for the sake for ven and sora and resigning to his painful existence in 3 and him being actively terrified by Xehanort and his threats being very much real in dark road, both of which also fits perfectly with the "sad" feeling you got out of him without the novel's context too.
Awesome video, thank you! A couple comments about a few characters: -Marluxia/Larxene motivation of taking over the organzation probably should be about their unionX agenda of finding Strelitzia. (just my theory) -I know that this doesn't reflect Maleficent as a a whole, but I think her time travel scene in unionX is pretty important, because its pivotal is so many ways. She learn privileged info about time travel/Darkness, she uses one of the time travels pods and we see the time travel rules working, because she could only get back to the future because she still existed in people's memories (Lea/Axel's philosophy is pretty great in this context if you think about it)

I'm not at all done with the video, but immediately when you chose DDD for Riku, I immediately agreed, because even though he never stuck with me unlike other characters in the series, he has just overall REALLY great character reflections and moments in that game, everything you could say about DDD aside, Riku really does shine pretty brightly in DDD as another moment I liked from that game was him not giving in to Ansem's attempts to set the darkness in himself free. He knows where he messed up in the past and pushes on to try and save Sora instead.
Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, iconic for dying. Actually rather fitting, I think he gets his ass beat at LEAST three times throughout the series. Maybe four? He's really good at dying. KH1, Riku Route CoM, DDD, KH3...
Okay so, on Eraqus telling Terra to protect Aqua and Ven instead of giving that position to Aqua: The reason Eraqus does this is to fix his mistake of not seeing the potential Terra had as an authority and force of good at the start of BBS, for not also granting Terra the rank of Master for that small bit of darkness he saw in him. Additionally, he mentions Aquas burden as well and understands she can't, as she is now, be the one to take up that mantle again. Eraqus is making sure he doesn't make the same mistakes he did in his life in this final moment with his students.
My favorite Sora scene is still when he's inspiring the members of Big Hero 6 in kh3. I think of how much Sora influences people is with his actions and just being himself, and that scene really shows and doesn't tell in a way.

What's so great about Regular Pat is that people can demand all sorts of sequel videos (aka Crocodile 2, KH2 in 1995, BBS Boss Ranking, DDD World Ranking), but no matter what we get it's always a fucken banger!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't see Ansem in that early game cutscene from KH1 because they were playing on a CRT TV. I remember being so confused about who Sora was talking to in that cave. Also that roast you did of Naminé was hilarious 😂

Your dub of "From Chains to Bonds" gave me quite the laugh along various other parts of the video. I really enjoy how seamlessly you simultaneously put out your thoughts and make comedic remarks about so many things like it's nothing. I'm sure it takes time to think of all of it but the execution of it is very enjoyable. What probably made that dub funnier to me is interpreting the "or both" part of saying Terra's theme should be your wedding or burial theme as getting married and buried at the same time. Unless that was your intention, in which case again I applaud the effort of your writing.
Another amazing video Pat! Some of my favorite moments are: Terra: The scene in KH3 where he shows up as Lingering Will and says "Got you, Xehanort" and procedes to beat his ass with the same moves and tactics he used on us back in KH2. I go back and watch that moment so often and I get chills every time. Terra FINALLY gets his first shot at justice and it's excellent. Saix: It's a short scene but his "death" in KH2 really sticks out in my mind. After all he's done and talked about, the pathetic "Where is my heart?" really shows how bought in he was and how much he desperately wanted a heart. Aqua: It's the scene where she finally returns to the realm of light for me, and why I'm writing this comment. Aqua is one of my favorite characters in gaming and her story and plight is filled with such tragedy, sacrifice, and resolve. There's a deep sadness to so much of Aqua and her finally coming back is one of three moments that made me cry when I first played KH3. The feeling of "everything's going to be okay now" hit me so hard. She cant even comprehend that she's in the realm of light at first, thinking that the Destiny Island instead fell to darkness. When she falls to darkness at the end of BBS she says "Ven, I'm sorry. I might not make it back as soon as I thought." and she might as well be stabbing me with a knife. She's so thoughtful that in her descent to darkness she isn't concerned with herself but with Ven instead and her return means she's able to also fulfill that promise. The cherry on top is Sora saying "You're home" in the same way Kairi says it to him at the end of KH2 (another of my favorite scenes in general) just unleashes the floodgate of tears. Major props to her VA who brings so much life and emotion to the character.
I miss KH and had the FFVII Rebirth hype fill that void for a bit. This was a nice way to remember how much I love this series. Thanks for a great video, Regular Pat.
That Mickey moment at 09.02 had me in tears as i played it, the only part of a video game to ever bring me to tears, i hold Mickey Mouse very deep in my heart for personal reasons and this really hit me in the feels!!! ❤ thank you for picking that moment as Mickeys best!! 1:02:43 In the japanese script of "I am darkness" cutscene, Vanitas states that the reason why he stands with darkness is so that Sora & Ven can live in the light. Don't ask me what that even means, I'm just stating what I heard.
It's a non-dualism thing. Non-dualism is the center of KH Metaphysics, that Light and Darkness are actually just polar manifestations of the same thing because they're mutually arising, their existences cause each other. "The closer you get to light the greater your shadow becomes" as the first game states. It seems that Vanitas/Darkness views its existence as such a threat is necessary so that others can prosper. While Ven offers the counterpoint that people should be made of both light and darkness, which would mean that everyone would have darkness but everyone would have light too, and Vanitas would not have to exist in the way he does. I like to think it’s just Goofy using Cover.
So as someone who’s favorite character switched from Roxas to Ventus, I feel like I may be able to illuminate some aspects of our pure boy that may make him stand out. As you stated, Ven is a light. And this is not just some KH lore distinction. He brings smiles and good vibes everywhere he goes. Take a look at his interactions with the princesses, for example. Aqua is delegated to prince duties in those interactions, but Ven is arguably there for them at their lowest point, the point where they’re most likely to give in. There’s some room for argument like Terra arguably sees Cinderella at her lowest, but Ven saw her completely disillusioned by her stepmother’s plan to keep her busy, and got to immediately be the light, the positive force, that helped her get to the ball at all. Aqua may give the girls a happy ending, but Ven gives them hope.
As it’s been pointed out, he’s also debatably a better friend maker than Sora. You echo the “Call me Ven” line in the video, but don’t seem to get why it’s echoed. The full line is “My friends call me Ven.” He’s sending an open invitation to everyone he meets that he is one Ven-call away from Friendship City. And you know what? It works! He easily gets into the good graces of every good natured character he comes across. And there is something endearing about that, even if it’s not your particular vibe.
In this same vain, I also like Ven’s empathy. I immediately think of him connecting with Snow White or Aurora. Without words, Aurora felt that she could trust him enough to show why her heart is so important to her. And that’s enough for Ven to devote himself to getting it back. And with Snow White, his first impulse was to console her. I feel like even Sora is prone to getting their new friend out of immediate danger before having a real emotional conversation with them. But Ven, either due to his naivety or empathy, takes a moment to console Snow White in the middle of an Unversed infested forest. And I think that speaks wholeheartedly to what Ven is about.
Ventus is a bright eyed kid like Sora, but one who doesn't even have the cute little shadow from KH1 inside him. A guy who's never just being a dick, a guy who's never being any more petty than a little church boy, he's just doing his best and trying to make friends.
It's a little dry, but he's the most honest guy you'll ever know, and the best friend you'll ever have. And don't mess with his friends, because that's about the only thing that'll really set him off.
Imo, the best Ven scene is after the trio fight in Radiant Guardian. Ven's defining unique trait is to me, being the kid. Repeatedly, everyone treats him like a kid and he acts like one often too. The way he chases after Terra and Aqua recklessly, the way he screws around, the way the others (especially Aqua) treat him like a little brother...
Him inviting Terra and Aqua to Disney Town, and then pouting over "two adults" entirely says that. And whilst I said that Ven's defining trait was being a kid that doesn't mean he's emotionally unintelligent or even stupid. Kind of the opposite. And as the two argue Ven can't do anything but sit powerlessly as his family tears itself apart. Even when he thinks he knows better.
I was laughing really hard throughout your description of Mickey's thing during ReMind basically being the climax of MGS4. I'd had the thought before but the way you put it just left me in stitches.
I did not expect Namine’s best Manga moment to be her crucifixion, I was convinced that it was going to be the time she was hiding and wearing a little army helmet XD

The scene of Sora bowing to Saix has some extra sting for the Japanese crowd, as bowing to that extreme degree is body language for 'I'll do whatever you want'. However, Sora jumping up from it so fast could be taken as a sign he didn't fully mean it, too, so there's a lot of good subtext to chew on.
30:28 worth noting that in the manga, this scene was changed from child abuse to Lexaeus discussing what a heart is with Roxas (while also failing at a chainlink puzzle, pretty cute)
Honestly with how stiff some of the characters move, I just love the scene with Demyx and Vexen in 3 and how they are going back and forth with each other. Not just standing there, blankly staring at each other while their mouths move. You can see the two being defensive, Demyx's expressions showing destain. Its small but I really found it great.
If you can guess by my username, I've had a chronic illness for my entire life. This makes Naminé my favorite character. I liked her status as a remorseful manipulator in CoM, but it's her evolution in the series that has made me love her. She reminds me of my favorite nurses. A person who is giving you bad news, and trying to help you through something difficult, and be a friendly face during the whole thing. It's hard for me to pick a definitive favorite moment, but I can say that her conversations with Xion demonstrate this the best.

as for Ven: to me, his defining trait that makes him stand out from roxas and sora is basically loneliness/yearning for friendship to the point that it's at times his biggest flaw. his whole thing in KHuX was wanting friends so badly that it allowed the darkness to control him into doing a murder so he could be friends with the other dandelions haha. and then all through BBS we see him relentlessly chasing terra at first, and then switching to running around worlds basically just trying to make friends. it's like he can't tolerate being on his own.
sora has his whole 'my friends are always with me' thing, but it doesn't feel like a point of insecurity like it is for ven. and roxas - while absolutely loving his friends - also has the ability to walk away from friends when the cons of a relationship/situation outweigh the pros of staying with them (which was always a trait about roxas i found distinct and interesting in the "friends are the most important thing" series).
just my two cents on the ven nuance! but i also very much agree with you that he could stand to have more defining traits, and that his embodiment of light thing will probably be a bigger deal growing forward :p
(also i was emphatically shouting "yes exactly!" to basically every tiny thing you said during roxas and xion's sections haha. gotta love a good tragedy character)
Personally, the Xion moment I first think of his her speech right *before* her big battle with Roxas. Before anything else, the two are friends, and in her final act of compassion she shared a quiet moment with him on the clock tower. But she knows, better than anyone, that this has to end. So she explains as best she can why, and forces Roxas to fight for his life. I realize I’m leaning more into “favorite” territory here, but that scene on top of the clock tower will always be more impactful to me than the scene at its base. It’s the one scene that’s stuck with me the longest since I first started this journey.
My honorable mention choice for Riku is definitely the end of Re:CoM, where DiZ gives him the choice between two paths, mans picks the middle like a chad, prompting DiZ to ask "The Twilight path to Nightfall?" and Riku countering with a more hopeful and accurate "No. ...It's the Road to Dawn." I wrote this purely out of memory. But despite DDD definitely being HIS game, this moment came to mind first.

Imo, Eraqus told Terra to take care of them not because he was the most cappable (phisically, he is), but because of how much bagage Aqua has herself. Terra has his fair share, but it's still, less, in that scene, Eraqus was, sorta, giving Aqua a shoulder to cry on, someone to rest, who would be better at that task than his own older step-son?
Pat I hate to be all sentimental and shit, and I don't even know if you're gonna read this comment or not, but your videos give me life. I'm not suicidal or anything (God forbid), but watching your videos just brightens up my day and lifts my mood. Growing up I was majorly obsessed with Kingdom Hearts, but the worst part is I felt like I was the only one. Knowing that not only someone shares the same interests as me but also gives a big enough damn to make eye-opening and bordering-on-philosophical content for my favorite game is really comforting. Keep doing what you do!

-When Mickey in COM first saved Riku and talked to him when he was all fuzzy, assuring Riku that he’d always be with him! A great proper introduction for the mouse
-Riku also COM at the end when he chooses to walk the way to dawn
-Kairi writing the letter to Sora at the beginning of KH2
-When Namine fist appears and talks to Roxas in KH2. I think that gets at her background but also mysterious and intriguing nature as well as her (ironically) caring heart looking for connection
-Also, Vexen in KH3 saying “is that all they meant by a heart” is crazy lol
-Saix expressing his jealousy to Axel in Days gets at his calloused nature but also hints at his later arc to reconcile
-Also, if you didn’t know about Luxord’s name, it might have something to do with the correct pronunciation of the Latin lux (that is, of course, light, pronounced “loox”), I think there’s been some inconsistencies about this in the series, and idk if that’s actually what’s going on with Luxord’s name, but I promise that is how you’re supposed to pronounce lux
-Roxas charging towards the castle with sorrow, rage, and abandon only to be stopped by Riku trying to talk sense into him and having an epic emotionally charged (for both parties) battle goes so hard and is so iconic
-Pete being rescued by Maleficent in BBS helps his character make a lot of sense I think, and, of course, is very indicative of the dynamics between the two of them
-When Xehanort, in KH3, said “one sky one destiny” before a crazy boss battle I was losing it, I really felt like I was fighting a crazy dark lord master (also when he clapped the Wayfinder trio lol)
-Vanitus at the end of BBB when you defeat him and then he reveals to Ventus that the unversed come from him, and we also get that face reveal! Lol
-When Terra stands up to Eraqus to protect Ven only to fall into Xehanort’s plot by being impulsive and too filled with passion
-When Aqua saves Terra. Definitely the crux point of her whole character

My favorite "Roxas" moment is in Re:coded during the last conversation before his fight where he talks about hurt to Data Sora and promptly lashes out at Sora. By far the most emotional I've gotten for him.
My favorite actual Roxas moment would have to be Xion's death or when he begs Axel to tell him the truth right before he leaves the Organization XIII

I think that this might be my favorite thing you’ve ever done. And I say that as a massive fan of all your content. The way that you, in fulfilling the mandate stated in the title of this video, also both contextualize and synopsize each character’s role in the series in general is a masterful feat of writing. Absolutely brilliant!
Also, I know that this will probably get lost in the pile, but I hope you at least see this at some point: thank you so, so much for all the wonderful content you take the time and effort to make and share with us, and for being such a beacon of relentless positivity.
There are a select few channels that I would happily watch/recommend based purely on the good vibes and love that you put out into the world, and you are absolutely one of the foremost on that list. In what feels like an ever colder and more cynical reality, it’s people like you who remind me of all the good things in life, and I can’t fully express how grateful I am for that. The care and attention which you put into all your work is amazing; it makes me want to be a better writer, and a better creator. The love you have for these games and the worlds they create for us to enjoy is so plain to see in everything you craft.

Aqua is a bit stuffy, but she has that big sister energy that makes it hard to hate her, even if it's easy to get annoyed by her. She worries about everything, tries to make everything right, and takes everything too seriously... but screw with her friends, and she's got a pocket full of Mean Girls on standby.
Mickey vs. Replica Xehanorts is the go-to example of what I love about Kingdom Hearts. If this were any other franchise, they would undercut this moment with a joke. Sonic the Hedgehog would have a wisecrack line about how cool he is, or some Marvel hero would point out how silly it is that they're doing this. But Kingdom Hearts? It put Mickey Mouse in an epic scenario and TREATED IT like an epic scenario. The silliness of the whole concept isn't lost on KH and I respect it so damn much for tackling it with 100% earnest. Epic Mickey. Epic f*ucking Mickey.

My favorite scene from KH3 is actually Jack Sparrow’s and Sora’s conversation at the tail end of the Caribbean world, where Sora talks about how one day isn’t enough time referring to Will’s situation and Jack reassures him telling Sora hearts always have enough time to say what’s true and that he should know better than anyone, this is what I think Kingdom Hearts is, just watching Sora grow and do what he does best and connect with people, i think this is a pretty good contender for both Sora and Jack moment
Mickey using Ultima as a defensive spell was pretty baller.
For Ventus I would actually go with his talk with Vanitas in Destiny Islands (idk if that's cheating cause it's listed as 3 scenes but whatever). I think it's a perfect reflection of Ven's true character arc which is losing his innocence and free will to fit with Destiny, from the start he's just a little kid that wants to get strong like his friends and wants to explore the worlds but can't because of this huge responsibility, unlike Sora and Roxas, Ven doesn't try to fight destiny or to reshape it, he just wants to run away which is why all of his main worlds are just him chilling with Disney characters for 90% of the time, but it's the fight with his master and the talk with Vanitas that breaks him, he wants to have the courage to change destiny by not fighting, but he simply can't. he's always been like this: destined to play a mayor role in life as either a vessel for light or darkness, and is this scene when Ventus realizes it's sadly impossible to deny destiny so he goes with Vanitas' plan anyways. This cutscene is a representation of how his fate was set in stone thoundsands of years ago and as much as he wants to, he can't do anything to stop it...
Kairi knowing that she's not ready for it, no matter how much she wants to go with, is a big moment, IMO. Sometimes, maturity isn't knowing when you're ready, but knowing when you're NOT ready.

Great choice for Terra it would’ve been between that or his confrontation to Erauqs. The line “you may be my master but I will not let you hurt my friend” with his theme is a chefs kiss and one of the only cutscenes I don’t skip when replaying the game

I think Terra is my 2nd favorite KH Character...because I identify with him a lot. I've never been possessed by an old man or anything like that. But like...we've all made mistakes. We've all done things that we look back on and regret. Some folks get out of it easier than others but Terra really went through the ringer...and he never gave up.
When he was tricked by Master Xehanort, when his body was stolen, when his friends were scattered, he was still around, fighting the good fight and trying to make it right. And eventually, all that hard work paid off. There was a time where I hated Terra but now...well, he's one of the favorites...Aqua is still best girl though.

My favorite Terra moment is one where he doesn't speak. Technically. Because it's Terranort who says "Your body submits, your heart succumbs... So why does your mind resist?" And then the Lingering Will proceeds to kick his ass hell yeah
I mean I dunno, Young Xehanort had some pretty strong scenes. In particular, I think the moment in DDD where he defies Mickey's Stopza spell and casually whips out a keyblade is a great moment. Like Mickey almost saved the day here, he swooped in and froze everything before anybody could even blink, but then Young Xehanort throws a complete keyblade shaped spanner in the works. Up to this point, I don't think anybody even saw that he was capable of wielding a keyblade at that age, he certainly wasn't doing it in the Mysterious Figure boss fight. This is who Xehanort is. An evil dirty asshole with tremendous amounts of foresight and cunning. It honestly seems like he was deliberately avoiding using the keyblade up until now specifically in case somebody comes in and tries to use time magic only to find that it didn't work on him and now the attacker is low on MP. It's perfect, defining even.
When Kairi goes to the cave and carves the paopu fruit, always makes me shed a tear no matter how many times I watch it
Every time there’s a new Regular Pat I thank god. Both for having a wonderful new KH video, and for the fact that said video hasn’t sniped the KH Topic that I’ve spent months working on.
Figures a new KH video would drop the week I start watching Friends, the name is so fitting.
I don’t think you understand how wild it is your content is good enough to get me to watch hours long videos of these games
You dont seem to know it, since you were confused about what Vanitas actually wants, but it was in the bbs novel, which revealed his proper actual backstory in some too graphic and mature moments for the games (vomit and child beating and abuse), which is "he is constantly in pain from having a broken heart, any time unversed are killed Vanitas feels all of it, Xehanort actively physically and emotionally abused him to get him to get stronger, he wanted to make the xblade to stop hurting as Xehanort told him was the only way to do so", so a very elaborate suicide attempt from his pov, all of this explaining why he acts the way he does and his contempt towards everyone, Xehanort and Ventus primarily, with the xblade shattering having us see a glimpse of vanitas under his mask of venomous confidence and at his deep fear below it. Dark road and kh3 dialogue point out to this backstory too implicitly, showing him actively sacrificing himself for the sake for ven and sora and resigning to his painful existence in 3 and him being actively terrified by Xehanort and his threats being very much real in dark road, both of which also fits perfectly with the "sad" feeling you got out of him without the novel's context too.

-Marluxia/Larxene motivation of taking over the organzation probably should be about their unionX agenda of finding Strelitzia. (just my theory)
-I know that this doesn't reflect Maleficent as a a whole, but I think her time travel scene in unionX is pretty important, because its pivotal is so many ways. She learn privileged info about time travel/Darkness, she uses one of the time travels pods and we see the time travel rules working, because she could only get back to the future because she still existed in people's memories (Lea/Axel's philosophy is pretty great in this context if you think about it)

This video made me fall in love with KH all over again. Amazing analysis on what makes these characters work
I'm not at all done with the video, but immediately when you chose DDD for Riku, I immediately agreed, because even though he never stuck with me unlike other characters in the series, he has just overall REALLY great character reflections and moments in that game, everything you could say about DDD aside, Riku really does shine pretty brightly in DDD as another moment I liked from that game was him not giving in to Ansem's attempts to set the darkness in himself free. He knows where he messed up in the past and pushes on to try and save Sora instead.
Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, iconic for dying. Actually rather fitting, I think he gets his ass beat at LEAST three times throughout the series. Maybe four? He's really good at dying. KH1, Riku Route CoM, DDD, KH3...
Okay so, on Eraqus telling Terra to protect Aqua and Ven instead of giving that position to Aqua:
The reason Eraqus does this is to fix his mistake of not seeing the potential Terra had as an authority and force of good at the start of BBS, for not also granting Terra the rank of Master for that small bit of darkness he saw in him. Additionally, he mentions Aquas burden as well and understands she can't, as she is now, be the one to take up that mantle again.
Eraqus is making sure he doesn't make the same mistakes he did in his life in this final moment with his students.

My favorite Sora scene is still when he's inspiring the members of Big Hero 6 in kh3. I think of how much Sora influences people is with his actions and just being himself, and that scene really shows and doesn't tell in a way.

Your dub of "From Chains to Bonds" gave me quite the laugh along various other parts of the video. I really enjoy how seamlessly you simultaneously put out your thoughts and make comedic remarks about so many things like it's nothing. I'm sure it takes time to think of all of it but the execution of it is very enjoyable. What probably made that dub funnier to me is interpreting the "or both" part of saying Terra's theme should be your wedding or burial theme as getting married and buried at the same time. Unless that was your intention, in which case again I applaud the effort of your writing.

Another amazing video Pat! Some of my favorite moments are:
Terra: The scene in KH3 where he shows up as Lingering Will and says "Got you, Xehanort" and procedes to beat his ass with the same moves and tactics he used on us back in KH2. I go back and watch that moment so often and I get chills every time. Terra FINALLY gets his first shot at justice and it's excellent.
Saix: It's a short scene but his "death" in KH2 really sticks out in my mind. After all he's done and talked about, the pathetic "Where is my heart?" really shows how bought in he was and how much he desperately wanted a heart.
Aqua: It's the scene where she finally returns to the realm of light for me, and why I'm writing this comment. Aqua is one of my favorite characters in gaming and her story and plight is filled with such tragedy, sacrifice, and resolve. There's a deep sadness to so much of Aqua and her finally coming back is one of three moments that made me cry when I first played KH3. The feeling of "everything's going to be okay now" hit me so hard. She cant even comprehend that she's in the realm of light at first, thinking that the Destiny Island instead fell to darkness. When she falls to darkness at the end of BBS she says "Ven, I'm sorry. I might not make it back as soon as I thought." and she might as well be stabbing me with a knife. She's so thoughtful that in her descent to darkness she isn't concerned with herself but with Ven instead and her return means she's able to also fulfill that promise. The cherry on top is Sora saying "You're home" in the same way Kairi says it to him at the end of KH2 (another of my favorite scenes in general) just unleashes the floodgate of tears. Major props to her VA who brings so much life and emotion to the character.

I miss KH and had the FFVII Rebirth hype fill that void for a bit. This was a nice way to remember how much I love this series. Thanks for a great video, Regular Pat.

That Mickey moment at 09.02 had me in tears as i played it, the only part of a video game to ever bring me to tears, i hold Mickey Mouse very deep in my heart for personal reasons and this really hit me in the feels!!! ❤ thank you for picking that moment as Mickeys best!! In the japanese script of "I am darkness" cutscene, Vanitas states that the reason why he stands with darkness is so that Sora & Ven can live in the light. Don't ask me what that even means, I'm just stating what I heard.
It's a non-dualism thing. Non-dualism is the center of KH Metaphysics, that Light and Darkness are actually just polar manifestations of the same thing because they're mutually arising, their existences cause each other. "The closer you get to light the greater your shadow becomes" as the first game states. It seems that Vanitas/Darkness views its existence as such a threat is necessary so that others can prosper. While Ven offers the counterpoint that people should be made of both light and darkness, which would mean that everyone would have darkness but everyone would have light too, and Vanitas would not have to exist in the way he does.
