I felt that many people come to CZcams for this kind of video, and it did not exist. Here I explain What is a Bone Marrow Transplant, and what is involved.
My sources for information included Leukaemia foundation and the Peter Mac Cancer Centre.

20 years ago, I donated via PBSC and pulled off the best bone marrow match in medical history. It was reverse engineered and the experts learned truckloads from it! It lead to dramatically improving the situation. I got stomped into the ground to do it. Today, it is a cake walk for donors. I am far beyond proud of being able to render such help to the situation! I am very happy to see that you survived! In 2004, my bone marrow recipient couldn't walk for 4 months. You were out of the hospital in 14 days! Did you ever meet your bone marrow donor? It is a magical friendship!
Hi! I am so glad that you are doing well. My niece also had AML 9 years ago, went through a stem cell transplant after all the other horrible treatments required to keep her alive. Her donor was her sister. My niece is now 32 and doing well. Science and medicine and miracles happen!

Hello from Spain Tyler. I was one of those 94% of viewers who weren't subscribed, but not anymore. Subscribed! Thank you for the great explanation. I had a mediastinal tumour 21 years ago. I know it's no related to leukaemia but it was a nasty kind of cancer. Luckily I overcame it, but it was a horrible, horrible experience. I still have nightmares about it. I am very glad to see you so well.
That would be a difficult cancer to have had! Congrats on overcoming it though, and thank you for sharing it on here! I relate strongly to the nightmares and re-living experiences around it all. I'm 14 years into remission and have almost daily nightmares about being chased/ sprinting away from the fear of my leukemia coming back. I'm SO glad you shared that it is a common post-treatment effect, I thought I was the only one. There is SO LITTLE information on post-treatment

You have answered a long time question about donating bone marrow. At the moment I am following a person who has AML and she had a bone marrow transplant. Her brother was her donor, but one was A+ and one was O. She is currently dealing with Host Versus Graft. She does have other symptoms like weak, headachy and dizzy. Then she knows it’s time for another blood transfusion. She seems to be progressing.

In general, what is survival rate for BMT in elderly patients in mid 70s? No respiratory issues but history of TIAs.
I saw this video after a few more of your videos, not in proper order.
Let me first congratulate you on your recovery after a successful SCT. You seem to me to be a wonderful person, I wish you the very best in your life. You might already have got your medical degree and I am sure you will be a great doctor simply because you have gone through such experiences at an young age. You also feel so much for other patients who are going through bad phases as yourself.
You told people to ask questions about SCT in this video. I have something to ask even though I note that this video is a year old. Nevertheless, I will ask my question.
My daughter was 25 years old in 2020, when she had some problems which she could realise in October that year. Then the tests for her diagnosis started and several months later in 2021 January, she was confirmed to have been suffering from Severe Aplastic Anaemia. I need not tell you what she and we were going through. She was having blood transfusion and SDP at very short intervals while she was being evaluated for the treatment . She is a single child and therefore, the best and most potent option of sibling donor was out of question. Doctors were then ready to go for the next best option of haplo identical donor among her cousins. There were a few of them, but she had a high DSR.
Finally, it was decided to go ahead with immunosuppressant therapy with horse ATG. Her condition was rapidly deteriorating and the ATG treatment was done in April 2021.
Her haematologist was doubtful of her response and wanted to be ready for SCT from a haplo donor. Was very worried about GVHD, which I understand is a big worry in case of non malignant diseases.
She had fortunately started responding slowly to the therapy at the end of two months from the treatment and after three months, she wasn't given any more packed cell or platelet transfusion.
At the end of one year, that is in April, 2022, her haemoglobin started dropping and she was given two units of packed cells. Since then she didn't require any transfusion.
Her haematological parameters are like, hb 9.6 to 10.0. WBC very good around 6000, and platelet around 130,000 or so.
Since January 2023, her cyclosporine tapering has started ( originally she took 100mg bd, now it's 75mg bd) and after a month her CBC results are the same.
We of course have to wait and see what happens as time passes. We know of all the rest of the risks which come with the treatment as well.
What I request you is that can you tell us about anyone who has undergone haplo identical SCT in case of severe Aplastic Anaemia who is in my daughter 's age group.

Macadamia nut I’m in Fiona Stanley hospital in perth currently having bmt for CML after 12 years and would love to help improve awareness about donating - we should have an opt out system like Germany as that’s where my donor came after such a long hunt - love your video

I'm wondering what is the most common cause of people dying of complications from bmt's. Infections? Drs not having the right meds to treat some outbreak like gvhd or even something much more rare... And how do most people even afford a bmt?? I've heard Medicaid being mentioned but it's hard to really figure it out...

Ah salty caramel ! Interesting 😊 It’s a difficult thing to quantify as the complications experienced are so unique to demographic undergoing a BMT. Ie age, the match of the donor, the primary cancer that is being treated, and the previous co morbiditiies. It makes it very difficult to specifically isolate the complications, but as far as expected complications, GVHD is a very common one that the clinician can expect but also the team can treat 👌👍

Okay, questions....you asked for it! Does the actual BMT change according to what your specific blood cancer is? What are the survival rates for someone who, like me, is 62, in fairly good health with MDS? I've had pneumonia (bilateral) twice in my life, does this render me more susceptible to getting it during this process? I don't drink alcohol anymore, (stopped a couple years ago)but I did every night for many years. Should I be worried about my liver? And lastly, does Ben and Jerry's really have an ice cream flavor called "Fish Food"?
So different cancers benefit from different treatments. So imagine that is where the differences would be.
Survival rates are useful with age, but more specific to the type of cancer diagnosed and previous treatment/response history and that can help determine the chances of success with transplant. Age definitely helps and minimal comorbidities. But there are so many factors that can influence it.
And the liver function is best reflected on when you look at the current state and functioning of the liver. 😊
And yes they do! It’s a great flavor 😊😊🥰

How long it takes for blood counts to come back to normal, like platelets and neutrophils? Do they ever fluctuate during the recovery?
Definitely fluctuate and can vary greatly in recovery times. You can expect that within 30 days they have recovered for some cases but it can vary a lot
My mum had high risk MDS, she had a SCT to attempt to treat her MDS however her transplant failed almost straight away after and she relapsed 3 months after her transplant her MDS then progressed to AML she’s too unwell for chemo so she’s just having blood and platelet transfusions to keep her going :/

Do you know of or heard of how common it is to actually die of the preconditioning of the bmt? My daughter died the same day she was going to have her new bone marrow 😭 she started to feel bad, slept a lot, abdomen pains, fever, very low blood pressure and very high pulse (she fainted twice), almost no urine production, at day -1. We were not informed beforehand that this could happen during preconditioning 😰 She only became 14 years old....
they told me that my risk is between 15-20% for the conditioning (myeloablative chemo + full body irradiation 12gy). i believe it depends on a lot of things, so there are no general statistics. so sorry for your loss. as a father i cant even imagine your pain... rip little girl.
Thanks for sharing this, that is such a difficult experience that you have had to go through, and I can't begin to imagine what you have gone through. I am aware of during my schedule they informed that the pre-conditioning is very intense. But I had not heard of a death before.

Do you have anxiety/ depression surrounding your treatment? I had ALL age 7 and now at 23 I am having 'late effects' relating to fear of cancer and lack of control that could return
I think it’s definitely something that persists and is always, ALWAYS worth chatting with a professional about it. Psychiatrist or psychologist, just someone professional

Hello tyler this is me Delbert (zxdd graphics) today is my day +6 now.actually my day 1-4 isn’t to bad.i just started shaking last night and high fever.its getting worse now with mouth sore and diarrhea.constant chill and fever.my case is MDS (myelodysplastic Syndrome) they used two umbilical cords as my donor.
Ah day 6 very early. In my experience every day closer to day 100 gets you better even when there are complications that occur during the process. I hope the days are getting better as they progress for you
