- Play Better Tennis In 15 Minutes - Instant Tennis Improvements
We all want to improve our tennis game faster, we want to feel good when we're hitting, we want to have energy on court and enjoy the game.
But so many of us neglect three important elements of tennis and it costs us big time. In this free tennis lesson, coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you how to play better tennis in 15 minutes for instant tennis improvements.
There are a few golden rules that all tennis players should follow, regardless of skill or playing level. These simple tricks will help you play better tennis each and every time you step out on the court, whether it's for practice or you're playing a tennis match.
Play Better Tennis In 15 Minutes - Instant Tennis Improvements:
Tip One - Track the ball at all times. The golden rule of tennis - watch the ball. Yet how often do we all forget to actually do just that? When was the last time you stepped out on the tennis court and purposely put all your focus and attention on doing the main task in tennis, tracking the tennis ball during the entire rally or point?
So often, tennis players of all levels, from complete beginners to the very best players in the world, including even Federer and Nadal, will forget to focus on and zone in on the tennis ball. This normally results in hitting the ball off-center or shanking the shot.
When you truly focus on the tennis ball, from the time it leaves your opponent's racket until the point it hits your strings, you'll be setting yourself up with the best possible chance to hit the shot cleanly, in the middle of the sweet spot on your tennis racket.
Focus on the ball when it's bouncing on your opponent's side of the court, as it's rising up to their racket, as they make contact, see how quickly you can pick up if the ball is coming to your forehand or backhand side, if the ball is coming deep or short, if the shot has topspin, slice or is flat, and as it's passing the net. See the ball land on your side of the court, see it rise up towards your racket, see the blur of the contact point and then see the ball travel towards your opponent. Repeat this entire process for the full duration of the rally or point.
The more you practice this, the better you'll get at focusing solely on the tennis ball.
Tip Two - Take a deep breath. The majority of tennis players will make this crucial error when they play tennis - hold their breath when they make contact. There are three main types of tennis breathers:
1. The tennis player who holds their breath during contact then exhales, often using a grunt
2. The tennis player who holds their breath during most of the rally or point, taking emergency air only when they're about to collapse
3. The tennis player who exhales during the strike zone and inhales deeply between shots (Federer style)
When you hold your breath, two main things happen, firstly your body is tense when you make contact so the swing is not as fluid or loose as it can be, and secondly, the body gets tired much quicker.
When you exhale during the contact point, however, the body can stay relaxed and you'll be fresher, for longer.
Focus on inhaling as you prepare for the shot, the backswing, then start to exhale as you swing towards the ball.
This will set you up really well to produce effortless power!
Tip Three - Margins. Often, when tennis players make unforced errors, it's not because of a particular stroke being bad or weak but the type of shot they've gone for. The two main obstacles on the tennis court that we must avoid and be aware of are:
1. The net
2. The lines
You almost want to take the net out of play, by hitting with two or even three net levels. Think about Nadal on clay, he rarely hits balls into the net because of his massive net clearance.
But by hitting higher over the net, we also have to get the ball to dip before the lines, this is best achieved by hitting with good levels of topspin.
If you eliminate the net and get the ball to dip, you'll reduce your unforced errors massively.
Crosscourt vs down the line. The other major thing that will help you become more consistent and a better tennis player, in general, is hitting mainly crosscourt. By hitting crosscourt, you're hitting over the lowest part of the net, into the most amount of court and you'll reduce your recovery steps to being in position.
So, the next time you play tennis, focus on just tracking the ball properly for the first five minutes, once you feel like you're zoned in, focus on your breathing patterns and finally focus on increasing your margins.

1. Track the ball
2. Breathe (I like to quietly say the word "easy" as I hit/swing)

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial yooo appreciate the response! I’ve been learning about how and when to approach the net, but I struggle with how to hit the ball when I am charging. Not just as far as where to hit it but just the technical aspects of how to hold and swing the racquet when Im in that position
Like I usually find myself with the racquet straight up and I have decent reaction time so i don’t feel uncomfortable close to the net but I also catch myself just swatting at the incoming ball legit like a fly swatter and I know that’s not good haha
Haha it happens, try to time your split step when the opponent makes contact, it will give you time to react and not feel rushed. Try to keep in in front of you and block not hit (imagine you are a wall) and move forward with your feet rather than with your hand. Hope that helps! …oh and appreciate letting us keep the Tennis Ball in Cup magic trick vid on Love Tennis Media!! 👍🎾 Alex

Awesome tips here. Especially, the breathing technique, which is hugely overlooked by most coaches that I have worked with. Inefficient breathing leads me to be gassed out during long points, make bad decisions on the tennis court and also has a spillover effect on the next point and the next and so on and so forth. @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Overhead on the backhand side; slice forehand; two missing pieces in my game. Thank you!
Well done. Love listening about tracking the ball. The quick snippet of the player identifying long or short ball is great. Notice how ones body needs to be reactive. And furthermore the psyche you need to instill in yourself to be able to react to any shot while you’re tracking. Well done.
How about breaking down how to maintain warm up rally before match starts. From rally pace, how to calmly hit, volley, overhead, and lob. I can’t tell ya how many times I’ve seen both players simply not knowing how to maintain a fair warm up pace. And then it affects their psyche because they’re simply not use to it. Especially the volleys, overheads, and even lobs.
Also please please remind every viewer why POSTURE is absolutely important!!! The way how you’re standing during your videos speaks volumes. SO MANY PLAYERS overlook that. I constantly stress to my students, your footwork will improve... BUT ALWAYS maintain your posture!!! Running and hitting. Ugghhh.
Overall love the video. I hope one day you can explore the aspects of tracking the ball. It’s something people don’t know much about.

You know, Simon, I'm not familiar to any rating system which defines a tennis skill level of a person.
But if we imagine a scale from 0 to 10 by which a person who never held a tennis racket would be "0" and Federer/Nadal and other top 100-200 people in the world would be "10" then I'd consider myself a "2".
Also I'm not a kid. I'm in my 30s.
So being such a beginner in tennis I'm all for basics like these in the video. Watching the ball, breathing, hitting cross, keeping the ball deep and high above the net... very basic things. I guess that's all what I need to remember now during practices/matches.
Maybe I'd be also interested in tennis gear opinions and basic "rules". Like "this type of frame gives you this" and "this type of string with this tension gives you this" and such. There's an ocean of gear stuff which beginners are not certain and confused about. Many racket frames, even more strings... too stiff frame and/or too stiff strings = tennis elbow. I don't wanna become injured but I also do want to feel comfortable, find the right gear solution(s) for me and forget about it to focus on my game and on improving from "2" to "3", then to "4" etc.
That's the point where I am now.
I try to get much of what you guys advise and I'm grateful. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks for this.

What a great-great tips... Can't wait to practice it on the court. Btw... How you suggest breath circulation at the 'Serve' condition? Do you think should i do the inhale when throw the ball to the air and exhale when hit the serve?
I like to inhale on the way into the trophy position, then start the exhale then, sometimes I'll even exhale slowly from the start and then speed it up as I go along, it takes some practice on the serve

Absolutely spot on! Thank you for posting! I read the comment about wanting a video on "how to construct points". I think that I have an understanding of how to construct points, but when I'm in a rally, I always feel that I'm on defense, I never get the opportunity to "construct" a point. I'll hit a good deep ball to their backhand, the opponent slices a short angle cross-court to my backhand, and I'm running! The planned construction of a point never seems to happen for me. What can I do to improve my defensive posture?
Try to train certain patterns in practice over and over again.
One of the drills I do with my players is you rally crosscourt and one player is the boss, whenever they want to, they hit down the line and the point is open.
Change over so both players get that chance.
This is the simplest yet most effective pattern to work on from the baseline
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Sounds like a good one. I'll try it with my partner today! (Are you releasing the forehand slice video soon? I'm finding it hard and getting mixed advice from other players. Thanks.)

I think tracking the ball is toughest to get used to. I think Djokovic is among the top players who are not constantly looking at the ball especially at contact point. At recreational level, I think it is hard to anticipate the positioning of the opponent which makes it difficult for me to hit without keeping an eye of where the opponent is going to be. I will give it a try but it will be unnatural for me. Simon, could you please make a video about how to return heavy and/or fast balls from the baseline? I faced such player and I felt I did not know how to use the energy of the ball and got tired. Thank you!
When your opponent makes contact, if you're tracking the ball, you'll see where they are so it will give you clues about their intentions.
I'll add that video to the list, dealing with fast balls on the baseline
Thanks for great video. I have just one question about tracking the ball. If you watch Federer, he stays looking at the contact point after shot, so he can't track the ball when it is flying to the opponent, right?
His head might stay down but his eyes can move, he might lose it for a split second or two but that would be worth the clean contact and those initial few feet when the ball comes off your own racket would be a time that tracking isn't as important as at all other times
What racket do you recommend? I just switched from pro staff to clash 100, thinking Blade instead. Any idea in wilson for advanced players?
I would test out as many different frames as you can get your hands on and see which one suits your game
New kick serve videos would be great. And explained about speed. When I try to do the brush up, it does not work yet well enough. Maybe some slowed down videos from side angle. I can hit about 105 km/h flat serve (not every time), but struggling with the kick serve and slice serve. How to start practicing slowly and how to do it at proper speed.
I am 72 years old (young :) ) and started my tennis playing 2,5 years ago. 20 years ago I couched young players, but I myself never played properly, so my lessons and my tennis stopped when I could not give more advice to my students. I have looked through most of your videos.
I have also made some Word documents by taking some situations photos from your videos to explain to myself and some of my senior tennis friends and putting explanation in English and in Finnish to those documents. Sometimes a good picture of the situation would be also nice (in your videos or separately).
Thanks for the feedback.

1. Always track the ball. Also if the Ball is on the other side of the field.
2. Breath out while you swing, dont breath out after the swing and hold your Breath while you're swinging.
3. Don't try to play the ball at the lines and dont try to play the ball near over the net. Try to play the ball a lot over the net and away from the lines.
You get great Topspin and height if you let the racket drop low before you hit the ball.
4. If you play Cross court you Can recover longer.

Hi Simon, I’m a solid player but too often I come off the ball and don’t take a full swing. It’s a mental thing but over time it has shortened up my forehand stroke. Any advice to address this?
Get your coach or partner to feed you balls and hold the finish for 2-3 seconds on every shot, make sure the coach doesn't feed the next ball until you've held the finish.
This will reinforce the ending and help you remember when you go back to hitting
You could start every session with 5-10 minutes of holding the finish

4:50 whoa, imagine if Nadal, Djokovic knew about this trick, they would have won like 5-10 more grand slams ;-)
Lol I'm sure they both know and work on it, but the stress of the match kicks in and they forget.
Djokovic is a hawk with his eyes and is very good at the breathing, sometimes he does hold his breath in when in matches though, in practice I always hear him exhaling through the strike zone
the intro reminded me of steve backstual
Stroke no.1 : aaaaahhhh
Stroke no.2 :ouuufffff
Sounds are important for finding differences between the strokes 😂
🤣
How do I lag if that was the word... How do I lag without the racket aiming up or down? It’s like when I swing normally with some of the lag on the racket it’s like the racket has a seizure and the ball is hit up or a whole different angle somehow

grass is always greener on the other side....Bang goes that Theory, thanks to Simon's back-garden....
I wish this was my garden, we’d have a lot more lessons if it was
I am confused on how to track the ball. Whenever I watch the ball, I end up watching my own shot and I struggle to tell where the opponent's shot is going and how deep it will be. As a result, I react late, am out of position and either leave an easy ball for my opponent or make an error myself. Generally, because of this, I have always struggled against hard hitters. Anyone have any tips??? Thank you in advance, I love your videos!
Part of tracking the ball is also watching your shot, seeing where it lands and moving into the right position as you do so. Maybe you are doing what I like to call "admiring your own shot" this is where you stop and watch instead of move and watch.
If you stay active with your feet, this problem should be simple to solve
Which racket is that?
The all white frame is a prototype, painted to protect the racket identity
String tension question.
What string tension are you playing with?
I've just changed strings and tension from really high tension (maybe 28 kg) to 24 kg and are noticing a drastic effect. Some positive effects but also the added power makes the flat shots more prone to get out of control.
Would be great to hear you speak about string tension and how to evaluate your personal perfect tension.
Thanks for all the great content!
I normally get my racket strung around 48-50lbs
We need to make an in-depth video on the subject
Oh that’s pretty low tension.
Just got of the court and was thinking of raising the tension up a bit or working on the technique to be able to control it..
Such video would be much appreciated.
@@henrikbrolin2765 Racquet tension, to some degree , is determined by the type of string you use; for example, Luxilon is strung at 10% lower, so if you want 55 lbs in the mains, for example, using Lux you would string it at 50lbs. Incidentally, Roger uses a "soft" string (like natural gut or Wilson NXT) in the mains and Lux (which is kinda like piano wire) in the crosses. As a general rule: lower tension for more power, higher tension for more control. Remember Borg, who had his (wooden) Donnay Borg Pro strung at 78 lbs? I've seen, on TV, his frame implode from the high tension. But at the end of the day, "it ain't about the bike"; it's about what Simon says in this video. However, he (probably out of kindness, or possibly instructor apathy) neglected one other MAJOR factor, the thing most amateurs hate to hear (or do): SPLIT STEP! Oh God, why did I have to say THAT!!
@@meafordmichael Yeah I can imagine there is a whole lot of variables to take into consideration. Can't say I really remember Borg, being too young when he was active, but as a Swede he has fore sure been a big part of the interest in tennis. There also were a lot of courts built during the 80:s in Sweden and a lot of them open to the public for free.
