How To Play in Tune on a Piccolo

  • Steps:
    Step 1: check your headjoint cork
    Step 2: tune to an F, then maybe an A - get your baseline intonation correct
    Step 3: start tuning individual notes. Play the note, look at the tuner. If it says sharp, hear the pitch for that note fall so you hear it lower, then play again and re-check pitch. If note is grossly out of tune, roll in until it's in tune, look away from the tuner, hear the note (really listen to it) and notice how it now sounds lower (maybe even sounds flat). Vice versa for playing flat instead of sharp.
    Step 4: Start tuning intervals. Do you tend to play a note higher or lower when you come from another pitch? Do only two notes at a time.
    Step 5: Tune octaves
    Step 6: Spot check notes in a piece of music

    just started working on piccolo, and I immediately noticed that i need earplugs! I don't remember people using them in marching band years ago, but man, its brutal, especially when you need to work on the upper register...
