    I got an 14" M1 Pro at launch and have been using it every day since then. I had picked up a 13" Air M2 for my wife and really liked how light and thin it is, but the screen is a bit cramped for my everyday work. My son's old 15" intel Mac died last week so I decided to hand him down my 14" m1 Pro and try picking up the 15" Air to see if I would be good with it as a daily system. I'm in IT, so anything I do that is systems intensive, tends to be on a remote server and not locally. The 15" Are has been great so far. I did get the semi specced up one with 16GBs of RAM and 1TB SSD because thats what was in stock at the nearest Apple store, but even with that being close to what a base M2 Pro would be in price, I still think I prefer this. Typing feels better with how much lower this sits on the desk and I like the key switches a little bit better. The bigger screen screen is great for coding/scripting. While the weights may not significantly different between the 14" and the 15", it is noticeable when moving this thing around. I see a lot of people saying don't buy the 15", a 14" off amazon is a better deal, while that is absolutely true, having used both, I think I prefer the 15". Except for the speakers of course.

In the USB-C hub I had attached an OWC dual HDMI DisplayLink adapter. That way I have a one cable solution that delivers power, drives three external monitors and attaches external storage and wired network all attached to the underside of my desk. I did not like multiple cables hanging off of my 14" Pro either, so the solution I had for that system worked for this one as well.

    I'd have to disagree on the conclusion. comparing new to new, equally spec'd, the M2 Pro 14 offers so much more for a small premium (more performance, 120hz miniLED, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, SDXC slot) for only 3.2 oz more in your bag. Even better, you can still get the refurbished M1 Pro for $300-$325 LESS than the MBA 15.

    • @ahaimes6320
      @ahaimes6320 Před rokem +7

      There are no refurb M1s in most countries and the M1 is old so I would expect a much cheaper price. Most of the benefits of the Pro are moot for me so the MB Air is an easy choice as I do not need the power. Also, I only need the base and the MB Air 15 is now discounted in the UK so much cheaper than the M2 MB Pro 14 (new -v- new).

      Very true. I was just in an Apple Store and pulled up old CZcams videos on the 14MBP, like from 15 years ago-and they look AMAZING on the 14. It was like watching old vids for the first time. Really delightful, joyous actually. Not so on the 15 MBA. Sound too. It's a trade off between chunky and expensive for very impressive quality or last decade meh quality for the optimal physical experience of the Air. The Air is very good, but it isn't going to make you beam, which is ok too.

If for some reason, I need performance that the 15" MBA can't offer, and multiple monitors, I have a Mac Studio at home with 2 monitors. I’m a masters student and a part time consultant with low key shit eyesight so the answer was obvious for me and I don’t regret it. Especially when we’re so busy working and studying, all we care about is efficiency (so the lightweight) and being able to look at multiple documents at once for reading, essays, and analyses. At the end of the day I’m so tired that when I’m tuning down, the last thing I’m literally thinking about is if I got a machine with a good display or if the speakers are good or not or if i’m going to need the power of highly specked out CPU/GPU or what not (see I don’t even know what any of that means). I think the point that was made about the “Macbook Pro is only worth it for those that need the power” needs to be extremely taken seriously for the rest of us who couldn’t be further away from being editors, youtube content creators, photographers, filmmakers and etc. Like I’m literally writing 10,000 page analyses on word doc, I don’t need anything more than convenience. Also the few hundred dollars can make a big difference for people out there, especially students. So don’t let that comment get to you too much if you’re feeling that. Like I was able to use the few hundred dollars difference for a new bag and some new school kit that I needed to buy anyways.

The Pro has better CPU, significantly better GPU, better screen, more ports etc. Its just that I dont think I really need any of that if I am being completely honest about my actual needs. The larger screen, lower weight and better battery life of the Air on the other hand is something I will notice every day. Can you do a low power mode on the Pro as well? I originally purchased the 15 inch air, but was disappointed in the charging as well as battery life so I ended up returning it and getting the M2 14 inch Pro. I’m quite happy with my Pro but kind of miss the thinness of the air. I didn’t think I really needed the extra power for what I do but screen quality as well as battery life with just day to day use, I felt the pro was a better purchase. I really wish they could lose the gap more between the 2 models and give me the amazing screen with thinness and amazing battery life all built into one device.

    • @brightboxstudio
      @brightboxstudio Před rokem +3

      Yes, the low power mode is available on the Pro as well. I use it. But on the Pro, low power mode does not extend battery life as much as on the Air, because the Pro has too many other features that can draw more power such as the brighter screen, more memory and storage (if you order more than the max available for the Air), more performance cores, and keeping the fans spinning when needed. That is why you will never get everything in one device…many of the features that make the Pro a Pro, require more energy and more space.

    IMO speccing air 15 properly (16/512) pushes the price so close to Pro territory, that it makes sense to just get a Pro for the benefits of much better screen and speakers, plus ports and performance. not to mention that you can get Apple Certified Refurbished pro's (m1 pro) for less than equally configured airs, so that's a clear choice, and exactly what I got, zero regrets. In India, there is no Apple Refurbished store(and I don't think there is one anywhere except USA), and buying from outside market will always be potential scam or false information about the product(obviously you can do good research and use trusted websites and so on and so forth).
    Still I will say that 14inch MBP is better than 15inch MBA because it's just better performance which one get with awesome battery life.
    Still most people won't need the power of M2 pro (even the base version), so getting the bigger screen with M2 chip in MBA will probably be ok for the masses using laptops for browsing, watching content (screens are quite same on both from viewing perspective in the real World unless someone is doing specific colour grading work or watching HDR10 content all day) and just doing basic document editing and stuff

I'd really like to see if that improves the cooling, particularly for the 14-inch but also for the 16-inch if you still have one. I would guess that, at least for the 14-inch, there'd be a small improvement if you put a high-quality thermal pad with high heat conductivity, over the heatsink to contact the bottom chassis. Would likely help with fan noise when maxed out as well, but I don't know because I've never seen it done!

And it is loud! To me personally. I consider buying new M2 Air 15 as replacement for my 2020 XPS 15. I do need a bigger screen for my work. So 14" Pro isn't an option. But 16" Pro just way more expensive. From CPU performance point of view, I'm happy with my current XPS. But I'll get another 20-30% boost with Air 15. What I do need is RAM and some space to run Docker containers. So my choice will be 16-24/512 model. I know it will be overpriced. But still way cheaper than 16" Pro. As I said before. I just need a bigger screen.
    P.S. HUGE advantage (to me) of Air 15" over my XPS 15 (2020) is complete silence. Despite the fact the XPS has less CPU power than Air 15. The fans kicks in eventually for few minutes here and then over the day. Not talking about gaming. You can't game on XPS without earphones on. It is freaking jet-loud.

    I think most buyers will not spec up the config. The small slow ssd sucks but you get a great discount for it and most people will just deal with it. People don't game or photo edit on their laptop, they literally do everything in the web browser. 8gb ram and 256 ssd will work fine for a lot of people and then the discount starts to make more sense. Apple's price ramp is perfectly designed to tempt you into going for the pro laptops.

    The 15” Audio does sound better - but i might be mistaking louder instead of better quality.

    I wish the MBP 14 was lighter. The weight of the MBA 13 is awesome

    I would separate this two models according to the customers types of work.:
    Buy 15" Air If you are: casual user, school member, office employee(manager, accountant, marketing etc.). Don't buy 8gb RAM version, in any case. Buy 16 or 24.
    Buy 14" Pro If you are: Software Engineer, Music Producer, Designer(2D, 3D), Content Creator, Gamer(lol). I would recommend to buy 32gb.
    NOTE: RAM can be bottleneck for your Laptop, no need to save money on RAM. So choose it wisely!

      But once you upgrade the MBA 15" to 16GB of RAM, it's no longer a good deal unless you prefer the form factor. The 16GB MBA 15" is only $100 cheaper than the base M1 MBP 14", which provides a much more powerful chip, an additional 256GB of storage, a mini LED screen, and more ports. Opting for a base M2 MBP 14" seems like a better choice when compared to the 16GB MBP 15" on a good day.

      @@PolarTea yes, but if you don't need those benefits, and actually bigger screen means for you more, it's still a good option.

    the bottom line is you keep the laptop for a number of years. so you want a machine that will grow with you. a have bought a nearly new and mostly unused macbook pro M1 14 inch with saved myself a boatload of money.

    I got the 14 inch MacBook Pro for my school. It’s a great computer but I don’t play games on it. I play games on my gaming pc , w vid❤
