  • Wave Soldering :- Wave soldering is a large-scale soldering process by which electronic components are soldered to a printed circuit board.
    Applications of wave soldering in PCB assembly
    Wave soldering is not as widely used for PCB assembly as it was at one time. It is not suited to the very fine pitches required by many of the boards in manufacture today. However it is ideal for the many boards still manufactured with conventional leaded components and some surface mount boards that use larger components. These boards are often those which are used in lower volume and possibly more specialised products.
    Flux Unit :-
    1.To Clean the metal of oxides that would otherwise interfere with the bond being made between base metal and the solder.
    2.It increases the wetting ability of the solder, causing it to flow more uniformly over surfaces.
    Types of Fluxing Process:-
    There are two methods for depositing flux onto the bottom side of the PCB in wave soldering. These are the foam fluxing and spray fluxing.
    1. Micro drop fluxing (Use in Selective Soldering).
    2. Foam Fluxing
    3. Spray fluxing
    Preheater Unit:-
    (A freshly fluxed board cannot be wave soldered successfully unless its underside has been heated to a temperature of about 100°C, the exact temperature depending on the flux being used. The reasons for preheating a board are:
    To evaporate volatiles
    To start flux activation
    To reduce thermal shock on the assembly when dwelling
    To meet the "thermal demand" of the assembly)
    (The reasons given for preheating are almost always:
    * To “activate” the flux by heating it.
    * To prevent solder balls by drying the flux solvent that would otherwise.
    * spatter if only contacting the solder wave.
    * To reduce thermal shock to the PCB from the solder wave.
    * To decreasing the warpage issue.)
    Types of Preheater:-
    * IR Heater
    * Calrod Heater
    * Force Convection
    Soldering Pot:-
    Wave soldering is usually the best method to use when high throughput rates are required.
    For wave soldering of surface mount assemblies and complex through-hole assemblies, two solder waves (Double wave soldering) are used. The first solder wave (Chip wave) is usually a fast flow-rate, turbulent wave formed by some mechanical means. It is formed by pumping the solder through rows of small fixed or moving holes at the outlet of the nozzle or by means of a unidirectional hollow jet wave
