Turin is intuitively using the Landsknecht like they would have been used in real history, which is really cool. Central European armies at one point deployed Landskenchte to break enemy formation after the initial clash. The Landsknecht, who in real history was very heavily armored, would use his mighty two handed sword to cleave through the first rows of enemy spearmen, paving the way for other close quarters fighters into enemy ranks. Their weapons would also be called "Gassenhauer", which roughly translates to "alley-cutter".
And it's said that the Landsknechte of the 15th and 16th century had detachable codpieces that doubled as coin purses. Now picture this:
You are a humble host of an inn in 16th century bavaria. The war against the protestants has been raging for far too long and all the mercenaries Generalissimus Wallenstein is attracting from all over the Reich are not making it better. Now this group of 2 dozen armed men, trained to kill and plunder, is staying at your establishment.
They drink and gamble into the morning hours, sing songs of war, wine and wenches, f*ck the barmaids (which might be your daughters), maybe some girls from the village get "volunteered". The Werber (advertiser or recruiter) who dropped them of a week ago vouched for these fine lads to be honorable fighters in defense of the righteous catholic church and now that Wallenstein starts to move out to bohemia, it comes to the bill. The Markholz (a piece of wood, where for every flagon of booze a notch is cut) has more notches than their pikes, your inn looks like Magdeburg in '31 and the locals will avoid coming to your house in the next two months.
Now for a change these guys make no more fuss than the locals, so after some 2 hours of negotiating, multiple invocations of the holy Mother Mary and curses on whole bloodlines the prize is agreed upon. But, oh no, the Kompaniekasse can not pay for the whole bill, negotiations start anew. After additional 2 hours, the threatening of you property, family, life and livelihood you agree to the new prize, still more than the funds. The Hauptmann of this lot yells "Taschen leeren, Gesindel!" and, oh surprise, his men obey. Small purses (which definitely didn't belong to that lot a year before, none of them could afford velvet) and bags from compartments in belts, vests, boots and then codpieces... THEY HIDE THEIR FUCKING MONEY IN COCK-ARMOR?!?
So after having to cater to these goons from all over germany, italy , switzerland, austria and god knows where from you barely survive with enough to cover the costs of their stay and you get payed with coin from metal cock-sleeves and boot-purses. Penuntia non olet. Praise the lord and his servant the pope.
Landknechte in general were pikemen in combination with Crossbow/handcannons.
The unit in the game is a Gassenhauer or Doppelsöldner. Its a guy who jumps into an enemy breach and Cuts in a way (Gasse) in the enemy formation
@@kael2295 Realistically the Landknechte would be the other infantry in his army and the greatsworders would be Dopplesoldner.
@@kael2295 Correct. To add to that: They were called Doppelsöldner (doppel meaning double) because they got twice the pay of an ordinary soldier. Walking around with light armor and great swords to cleave into the opponents was very dangerous.
Hardly. Landsknecht did not use two handed swords that much and they also werent heavily amormored. They were mostly pikemen and handgunners and mostly used just breast plate.
Dude, I've loved your warhammer content for years. But I got to say that I can't get enough of these Age of Empire 4 matches.

auchen chapel is much better for long games. It boosts huge amount of income. What is more important it will buff late game farms. Meinwerk is only for rushes.
Agreed. I always place it where it hits a stone and gold for sure, then wood or berries if possible. Mine out and ring twice with farms. Mill in the corners to connect and it's all you need with 28 farms and with the monastery tech it's 50% faster farms with only 1 tech. That's more than all three farm techs combined at 15% each afaik.
I swap to farms quickly as HRE cause of this and either boom into infantry/cannons with the money chapel or flood with infantry in era 3 with the 5x barracks building.

the chapel doesn't make the prelate's bonus any better IIRC, so you literally get the same effect by probably building 2 extra prelates. It's just save you building a few extra prelates, the money you save collectively on every upgrade through the course of a game is probably a lot more.
@@sammor9 not practical solution becouse prelate is considered military unit and will go to front when all military units are selected. Huge misdevelopment if u ask. Prelate should be civilianclike china tax man.
@@pw5232 no offense to your kills, but I think for a high level player that can manage your rally points well, that it's not a big issue.
The Regnitz Cathedral is even better than you think: it generates +200% extra gold from relics, meaning that you actually get 900 gold per minute from 3 relics, not 600.

I'm new to the aoe games and your videos are really helpfull, plus very entertaining! Just watched a vod of a livestream where you played every faction from couple days ago! Grand theft deering is the strat.
Just a defensive idea: i think you could really maximize the use of a single Mangonel by building stone walls on either side of the front gate creating almost a “hallway” that funnels the incoming enemies into a single line. Then place a mangonel behind the gate lookin through the door so it can fire with springs/trebs (or anything to defend it) behind it so it doesnt get flanked. I’m no pro, but it would seem to be a really efficient way to guard one gate from a large invasion force assuming they dont destroy the hallway walls.

Those small fights like for relics in early age 3 is very important especially when you have that landmark as hre that gives 3x the gold. Loved the attention to relics on your part to act fast and pick ‘em. Sometimes even the pro players disregard the relics for some reason

Quick German lesson: Landsknecht is a combination of two words. It's basically Lands-Knecht, so there is no "sh" sound as the s and the k are pronounced separately ;)

An alternative name for the Landsknecht (or at least the ones that fought on the front line) is Doppelsoldner, which literally means "Double-Pay men" because they were basically the suicide squad the germans sent in to break the spear line. More importantly its also much easier to pronounce when you are trying to do commentary and play the game at the same time.
Different things though. Landsknecht was a term broadly used to describe german mercenaries in the XV to XVII centuries, and Doppelsoldner were, as you stated, soldiers who were paid double and wore better armour due to being in the frontlines of the pike formations.
I mean, the way he uses them (as a few elite units within his line of greatweapon infantry) probably lines up with Dopplesoldner's more

I have really big problem using mixed units. Generally I am trying to play as low diverse army as possible, eg. Strelcy + Knights with priestes/infary + some (anti)sidge as support).
It really hurts me when I have to build archers/crossbowmans early and cant really use them later :S

So, at around 27 minutes into this video, you mentioned that Archers get a bonus vrs "lightly armored units". Sadly, that is not entirely true. They do get a scaling bonus against "light melee infantry". It's pretty much only the Spearmen and Landsknechts, as far as I'm aware. Same thing for Longbows.
That being said, I do find Archers somewhat useful vrs Handgunner units. The trick with using them to counter HGs is to have a meat shield for them. Their dps is rather poor compared to HGs, and their HP pool is low. They are a more economical choice for sure. Not too many options when out of gold, yet...
The real counter to HandGunners though is the Horseman "light cavalry ". The bonus damage that they do vrs ranged units does count on HGs. Horsemen have great HP per resource spent and are rather cheap. It won't work too well if they have a big critical mass, or if they have a choke point setup, but it can be amazing if you are able to envelop the enemy. The sheer movement speed of horsemen allow for excellent fluid movement. Great for picking off reinforcements and doing flanks. Or snipe dives on artillery. All the while giving you a chance to bring in some other support units, hopefully. XD
Fun fact, 200% of 100 is 300. The regnitz is even better than you thought. It gets you 900 gold per minute.
I would not recommend to mix in the longswords especially in a 1 to 5 ratio. You only waste tech time and money on them and they get focused by good players and still go down as fast as groups of them.
I think I know what my issue is, but has anyone else not had AoE not start? I think I need to update windows. I checked the whole "missing files" thing, and it all seems to be there.

Ive never played RTS games very much but Age 2 was one of the very first games I ever played. I want to jump into online play but im very intimidated. How does the matchmaking work? Will i be paired against a veteran of 15 years and just get demolished?
There is an MMR, so you'll face another new player at first!
Not sure if you are aware but the sacred sites also give you a gold income per minute.

Do wild animals provide better/quicker food gathering? Is that why its big to find those hunting grounds?
HRE keeps are normal cost. Useless emplacments are 25% cheaper. Garbage faction bonus like many other hre bonuses

You do not want to be pressured with a faction with no stone walls. On the other hand, attacking the enemy while knowing enemy raiding cavalry cannot do anything against your walls is really reassuring.
Uh, Turin, a math question... Does the Regnitz catedhral give +200 % gold? Cause that would be 300 per relic, not 200... 200 per minute is extra 100 %, not extra 200 %...
I challenge you to complete the campaign mission in the 100 Years War campaign: Siege of Paris on hard difficulty. I don’t think it’s possible.

The warrior monk is too OP in case of relics. HRE are religious focused and a lot of their boons come from it but it really means nothing if you can't secure a couple of relics and sites. That's why I stopped going cathedral.

I like how in this game attack moving is considered a “fancy micro trick” but in games like MOBAs it’s just basic knowledge for attack damage carries

In your game you just got T3, and made a T3 clash with your enemy, who left you untoched for the entire time. No "timing" involved at all
