Actually Russia has ALL the necessary resources to become a strong country. (And a good country to live in) The problem is that it is difficult to become strong when you have evil leaders. With all the natural resources, educated people, technological skill and modern infrastructure (in cities) Russia has all the possibilities to be a rich country providing for very comfortable lives of its citizens. Instead people outside cities are poor like in development countries, their male children are dying in the 10 000's. Life is misery to many people. Russia is simply the most underperforming country in the world! The reason? The culture is very receptive for destructive forms of nationalism where Russia must "be powerful". The Russian culture needs a reformation just like christianity once did. Vladolf Putler and his entourage is stopping this reformation and is the direct cause of Russias underperforming and the Russian peoples bad quality of life.

True. From what i learned about Venezuela, it seems like if countries which overly rely on commodities like oil and do not diversify into other sectors are doing worse than others, especially when commodity prices go down(Or if you start a war and Europe slowly stops buying your commodities :D). It is easy in these authoritharian countries to blow that reliable oil money on corruption and politics but then they never get anywhere. They should have innovated other sectors decades ago if they had less corruption and more care for their country and people, instead they wanted to achieve things militarily like in the previous centuries which is not gonna be tolerated anymore. Venezuela used to be the 4th richest country and now it is the poorest country of America. Russia is definitely on the same path right now even though how much poorer it can get is questionable and sad to think about. Norway has a huge sovereign fund put aside to be good even when oil performs badly or does not make money anymore, Saudi Arabia has i think the cheapest cost per barrel and the USA is a technological powerhouse with diversified industries and global currency. :D Russia is in a costy war while being sanctioned to the hell...so "good luck" Vladolf, people used to think he is smarter than that, before he started acting and proved everyone wrong.

Russia could learn something from Germany. Germany's influence is greater than ever because Germany respects its neighbors. The EU countries were always at war with each other up to and including World War II. Since then, it has been possible to discuss disagreements at a table rather than on a battlefield. It has brought prosperity to the population.
That was also the hope with Russia when the Soviet Union fell. But now Putin has revived all the enmity which only gives a worse economy to a better life because more money has to go to the military. And unfortunately it will probably be like this for the next 30-50 years.
And Russia will lose the economic war for resources. Russia's economy is the size of Spain's. Then add all the other countries in Europe. It will be like the escalation of the last cold war. And it could have gone completely differently.

Regarding the guy with glasses in the middle of the video, I've often heard that Russia is an autocracy because Russian leaders think that this sort of control is necessary to expand and maintain influence. They do it to become "great", as they see greatness.
Then, the idea goes on, Russian leaders feel frustrated that their country is not the best at all things, that it cannot compete well in all domains.
I don't agree that any of this is true, reasonable or even logical, but I would like to point out one thing: Great innovation and accomplishment is likely to occur in historical periods where there is 1) an influx of new ideas due to contacts with other cultures because innovation must always stand on the shoulders of giants. When you encounter new ideas and technologies, there is a bloom of invention because new things become possible when you synthesize new ideas.
and 2) Innovation can only occur in a fairly free and unhindered environment. This is why google has silly things like ping pong tables, yoga classes, meditation rooms and flexible scheduling.

[..] The terms of the treaty stipulated that if either country were attacked by England, the other country would invade English territory.'
It lasted until 1560 when it was replaced with a new treaty involving England too.
The Scots and the French shared a powerful neighbour - sometimes harbouring ambitions in one or both of their countries! It was politically expedient for them to form this alliance. Incidentally, not exactly but _roughly_ the same principle informs the NATO alliance. (Each country in the treaty will come to one another's defence if attacked.)
