  • The Last of Us Part 3 is inevitable. There is more story to tell in Ellie's life. Naughty Dog has been relatively quiet on all working projects outside of the occasional update on Factions and the incoming HBO debut. But post The Last of Us Part 2, the environment for a sequel is different. Naughty Dog can take things many ways.

I would love to see that as like a prequel or like what they did with left behind and make a dlc/ standalone or something, or even just a full game in itself..
However, Naughty Dog has confirmed a plan for Part III so I doubt they would pass up the opportunity to be able to make it..
Now, lets imagine a prequel of any part of Joel's story after the events of Sarah and Before the events of Robert (since technically that was the earliest event in the game besides Sarah)..
Joel said he worked as one of those pricks who would ambush you so that would be interesting but like what else because I am prettys sure he did multiple things as well, even his current Boston life surely had some excitement to it.. XD

Part 3 will likely be about how Ellie, who lost everything, finding meaning to her life again. Just like what happened to the Joel 20 years later after he lost Sarah. I do hope Ellie won't be starting the game with Dina and live peaceful life. Maybe Abby finds what she was looking for, and form a new fireflies, her path may come across Ellie again if she decides to continue her father's work.

I say I would agree that there would be more to Ellie's story but we arent the creator to this fantastic story.
If Dr. Uckmann deemed it necessary then we probably wouldnt see Ellie again or at the least maybe a feature of the next game..
Thats if Dr. Uckmann deemed it necessary but I think.... I hope that Ellie does get one last story, it would be nice for Ellie to have if not a happy ending atleast an ending that could be classed as redeeming for her as this video pretty much said.
Also this is why I absolutely loved Part 2 and its ending.. I understand, blood, violence, revenge but.... This isnt Doom Eternal!. XDD
But more with a serious point, its telling a story, whether its heartbreaking and people hate it or not, it felt right the way it ended..
Abby is a piece of dogwater at times as well but that really only portrayed in the worst way for her..
If only she was shown in a different light..
I played the game and for the longest time I stopped, it was at a bit where I started as Abby for the second time, I was let down I think but also I didnt stop on purpose.. Got carried away with life I guess. XD
But when I eventually came back and played the game I focused on playing the story again and kinda got to a point where I forgot about the entire point of the games story, I was playing a character I started to like and it was enjoyable which made each scene watching the two characters Ellie and Abby fight eachother.. Like the stress and anxiety of having to choose and like ofcourse I choose Ellie but... I didnt want to choose.. XD
I think that may have been the way Naughty Dog would have wanted people to feel when playing the game..
Sorry for massive reply as well.. XD

I could see a third game where Ellie seeks out the remnants of the Fireflies to see what chance at redemption she has if she can find them and still do something good by making the cure. Maybe Abby’s father’s notes and the work of the original group Joel slaughtered still exist and can be incorporated somehow. But there’s a minor difference as the plot progresses, there is a chance she could survive, but it’s only a 10 percent chance or something. I could even see a fitting ending shot. Part 3 ends with a shot of Ellie going under for surgery and the game cuts to black as she closes her eyes. It would bring a trilogy full circle. Both in context, Ellie herself going back to seek the fireflies for a chance at a cure, as well as redemption, only this time it’s Ellie’s redemption instead of Joel’s and she finds it on the same journey, and it would leave the same ambiguous ending where people would discuss for years whether Ellie survived or not based on what transpired or what she learned through the game, or it would leave that one piece the first game always had. Hope.

the issue with ellie giving herself up for the cure is it completely undermines joel's decision in the first game, which went beyond just the selfishness of him not wanting to give up his surrogate daughter for a cure that saves humanity when in reality, humanity cannot be saved. what we learn in part one is that the good of humanity is so sparse. bad people run things now--even the fireflies are morally ambiguous. we see it with the hunters, the cannibalistic group that david lead, the WLF & seraphites, and the few good ones left, like henry and sam, are not compatible with the unfortunate reality that the last of us is in.
joel knows that humanity is not worth saving, and that really one of the only good things left in the world, like childhood innocence and pure goodness that *was* ellie, should not be sacrificed for the garbage that humanity has became. she deserves to live her life, and this is something ellie could not grasp until she herself went out into the world as an adult with less naivity after joel's death. she saw the sheer horror that the seraphites and WLF did to each other over their stupid tribal feud that got them both killed in the end. like the seraphites hanging and stringing up WLF soldiers, and the WLF killing a bunch of seraphite kids for trespassing.
in the end of part 2, she realizes why joel did what he did, and let abby go. he did what he did because ellie is good, and goodness is scarce. killing abby would have just put the cherry on top of the terror she inflicted on people completely unrelated to joel's death. she killed hundreds of people just to get and kill one person. joel killed dozens of people in the hospital just to save one person. they contrast in this way. ellie, in part two, has succumbed (you could say inevitably) to the evil that is within the world, but we know she is still good inside, there is a chance for her redemption.
what i'm basically trying to say is that i think part 3 should absolutely wrestle with the cure and the dilemma that comes with that, but she should choose to not die for it. because at the end of the day, what is she dying for? the fireflies would have posession of the cure because of her, and then what? it will obviously become politicized. who should get the cure? the hunters? the cannibalistic tribes? who? she should focus on redeeming herself through whatever medium (maybe through jj?) and live the rest of her life in jackson.
i think the end, the message will be humanity is simply not worth saving. the world has gone to hell, and bad people run the world now.
sorry for the long answer but speculating on part 3 is so fascinating to me!

I appreciate that you touched on the fact that Part II was a tonally appropriate ending. I hear a lot of people talking about loose ends... "Abby's still out there. Ellie has to finish what she started." I believe people who feel this way missed the whole point. Part II is complete because both Abby and Ellie had multiple opportunities to end the cycle of violence and they both finally chose to do just that. Ellie lost almost everything, but she finally made the right choice.
I actually hope Part III will not be a continuation of this storyline. Remember that the story progression of Part II revolved almost entirely around characters we had never met before, aside from Ellie and Tommy. I hope the writers do something similar with Part III, creating a story that is truly original and adds even more depth to this world we've all come to love so much. I believe Ellie has to be at the center of the story in some way. Other than that, I hope they surprise us.

Lev also being the commander of the fireflies armed forces would be fitting too. Seeing Ellie alone and maybe become a smuggler like joel would be interesting she would have to face her worst fear of being alone and this could have a lot of devolpment with her character. Maybe she takes Joel's role on and becomes like him to some kid, which would make the trilogy come full circle. However I could see Abby having alot of conflict within the fireflies since she knows Ellie is the only immune person but I highly doubt she will go after Ellie, maybe this cause conflict within the fireflies since Abby effectively tried to erase knowledge of the only immune person and the fireflies end up finding out.

    A couple of things:
    1. Part III has been confirmed more or less by Neil Druckman. There is a making of part II documentary that is on CZcams where the last scene is him saying that “it does feel like there is another chapter to be told in this story.” He has also discussed a possible DLC or spinoff just involving Tommy.
    2. There is more or less confirmation that Abby does find the fire flies and it wasn’t just the rattlers baiting her out. Keep in mind, she was on a HAM radio and anyone can be listening as well as chime in and they were in an area marked with the rattlers tag so it’s fair to assume that they may have been in the area and heard the conflict with the infected that you encounter before you find the right house. However, at the end of the game upon completion the title screen changes from the boat docked at the rattlers base to it stranded on a beach in front of the building described by the firefly on Catalina island which is apparently the Catalina casino.

exactly. i think this is what joel had in mind when he slaughtered the fireflies. ellie instills hope in people not just because she could save mankind with her sacrifice, but who she is is a genuinely good person, and that is so hard to come by. arguably, it's as rare of a commodity as a cure. her very existence proves that the good of humanity can still live on in face of all the bad, and her lack of existence dims the light that shines in the darkness. a cure won't save humanity. maybe an uptick in morals will.
the fireflies act as if they are the light, but they just contribute to a cycle of never-ending rebellion and violence. look at the wlf and the serpahites. both believed they were right, and both caused their own extinction because of their self-proclaimed righteousness. if the fireflies were to gain complete control, i can wager ten million that they'll become just as draconian as the military. it's so ironic. the fireflies claim to be the light in the darkness as they try to snuff out an actual light in the darkness.

A sequel that did not have the same emotional weight as part 1. Part 2 had to justify itself to me and it did that in abundance imo. I don't think The Last of Us Part 3 has to happen - but you're certainly right that this concept of continuation in games has been a norm. And the whole game is about both Ellie and Abby looking for each other. Then the last few hours of the game is of Abby finding her and letting her know that there’s a doctor willing to do a surgery, then Ellie choosing to sacrifice herself. And the game will end with a four or five minute cut scene of her prepping for the surgery and laying back down on the table and the camera is above her slowly zooming in to her face and may be a few flashbacks of Joel and everyone she loved. Then she would slowly start dozing off because the anesthesia starts to kick in, and it fades to black, and that’s the end of the game end of her story.

I don't really want there to be a Part III. I see a lot of people saying that Part II ends with Ellie at her lowest, and that she needs to redeem herself in Part III and that Part II has a sad ending, and I don't really agree with any of that. Ellie's lowest point is not in the moment where she walks away from her empty home with two missing fingers, its in the moment where she almost kills Abby. Trying to kill Abby cost her everything that meant anything to her (Dina, JJ, Jesee, her relationship with Tommy, her ability to play Guitar/connection to Joel, etc.) but in that moment where she spares Abby, she keeps something more important than anything else she lost along the way: her humanity. If she had killed Abby, and returned back to that farmhouse, still carrying the trauma of what happened to Joel with her, that would be an unresolved ending that I could see all those points being made about, but that isn't how it ends. She spares Abby, and forgives herself for not taking advantage of all those years with Joel where they were no-contact, and begins to take steps towards resolving some of her trauma. That to me IS redemption for Ellie. Not the entire journey, but the first step of a journey that we don't need to see.
If we were to see Ellie redeem herself, what would that look like: Making up with Dina and trying to fix her family that she broke? Making things right with Tommy, who is bitter that she could have killed Abby but chose not to? Learning guitar left-handed, not as effecient a player, but good enough to keep the skill? Maybe she goes on a journey of self-discovery and travels the country looking for meaning, trying to live in peace to attone for what happened in Seattle? These sound fine, but they aren't enough to fill a game with, and they also would not be good PLAYABLE stories. A Part III about Ellie means that she has to be in a position where she is killing infected and, very likely, humans again, and I just don't like the idea that the next part of Ellie's journey is filled with more violence. I don't see any point. Ellie's journey towards redemption isn't done, but I don't think there is any way to tell the story of her redemption in an interesting way in a Part III.
And I also don't really like the idea that Part III could have Ellie give her life for the cure. The whole point of the last scene with Joel in Part II is that Ellie has to come to terms with the fact that her life has meaning OUTSIDE of being the cure for the infection. Her life DOES matter, and she leaves that house at the end of Part II to go find that meaning. Ellie making the cure in Part III just ignores everything she just learned.
I don't know, I figure Part III is coming eventually, and I'll see what it's about before deciding definitively that I don't want to play it, but I have a hard time imagining a Part III that can continue her story in both an interesting AND a narratively satisfying way. For me, Part II is a perfect ending.

Honestly, i think part 2 wasn't even necessary. Not talking about drama or any of that, i just think that Ellie and Joel story was closed perfectly in the first game. A perfect sequel for me would have been same universe, different characters.

I'm ready for TLOU3 as well. The story telling is amazing. I'm not into multi-player games though so unfortunately I'll be skipping the next game they are coming out with. I look forward to hearing people breakdown the story aspect of it though.

My initial thought is they will mirror Joels actions in the first game with Ellie about to give her life so the cure can happen, only to flip in order to save someone she cares about, eg Dina's child. Thus choosing not to save humanity but the people she cares about.

Part 3 is as necessary as Part 2 was, IMHO. This has the potential to be one of the most satisfying stories ever... at least that's how I feel about it. Nothing has ever impacted me more.
What redemption could mean for Ellie... I really hope ND recognize that a vaccine will not cure humanity of the problems that ended the world... it's so relevant to what's going on today, too.
