As an adult who is autistic, it is not about the actual language itself as much as him using it as an insult. It is ablest and should not be excused no matter the age. I'm not saying we need to instantly cancel someone - but this would be a great time for people to take a step back and think about how language matters for all groups. Especially since the same video started by showing out the damage that comes with hate.

Personal experience is irrelevant/insignificant. Statistics are not. False equivalency. The developmentally disabled do not, inherently, believe in violent ideologies like religion. Religious wars are not fought over slurs, they are fought over the 'better' imaginary friend. @@jimjo8541

He's right that every word used to describe developmental disabilities will become an insult - but it's not justification for using it as an insult. We should be focusing on insulting people without throwing others under the bus. Calling someone disabled as an insult should become outdated.

I think the problem is that it's not really a slur against the people, but rather the condition itself that is being used as an insult.
It's a bit like saying someone is a "cancer."
The difference between this and an actual slur is that a slur is specific to a group of people to be used against them. This is more of an analogy to exhibiting symptoms of a condition that negatively affects the mind.
The meaning isn't really tied to negativity towards people suffering from the condition, but rather negativity towards the condition.
Same problem with words that describe other conditions, obesity, mental illness, etc.
Honestly I think the only groups that the negative connotation applies to the people who have the condition rather than the condition itself is probably obese people or addicts since those have a perceived choice involved to at least some people.
But even then people can use the terms negatively without that because it's still not at its core directed at the people but rather the condition as the negative.
That was a bit repetitive sorry, was essentially stream of consciousness, working out my thought process there.
