  • Tom takes us back in time!
    Whilst most of us play modern four- or five-string instruments with steel strings, double basses in the time of Bottesini often had three strings, and they were made of gut.
    Here, Tom performs Billé's Study no. 11 on his own three-string double bass, showing us the unique sound of the gut string double bass, and the difficulties that this instrument poses.

    That was amazing! I think the original sound of the double bass with gut strings is special and deserves respect, it has an almost vocal quality!

    Hi Tom and George. Very nice. It reminds me of my first teacher because he played his entire career until 1987 with gut Kaplan strings on his 4 s Altimira sized like Tom's pear. He bought it in Buenos Aires from his catalonian teacher from the. Valls school. Yes... a Torello fellow . Have a good day. Johnny

    how far do three gut string basses go back? did any of them have gut frets like a viola da gamba?

  • @hernancuadrado120
    @hernancuadrado120 Před 4 lety +2

    Hi! Which gut strings is he playing on (Brand and/or diameters)? And would it be possible to find out the setting of the double bass concerning the string heights? Thanks a lot! Great video

    • @ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers
      @ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers  Před 4 lety +5

      Hi, glad you enjoyed the video! The gut strings are very old, that were taken off an old bass and Tom saved them. For the string heights, Tom wanted the width of his little finger under the G and the width of his thumb under the A :D

    • @hernancuadrado120
      @hernancuadrado120 Před 4 lety +1

      Great! Thanks for your answer, the strings don´t look old at all however! Did you treat them in some way before using them? And I should ask the diameter of Tom's fingers! :)

    • @hernancuadrado120
      @hernancuadrado120 Před 4 lety +1

      I would be very interested in knowing the diameter of the strings. I use gut strings in my basses, I've tried many brands and makers. I have many old strings as well but the range of the diameters is huge! I guess some were meant for soloing and others for orchestra, but it would be interesting to know the thickness of these specially this G string. It sounds beautiful in the high range (besides Tom's stunning skills and the wonderful instrument)

      @@ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers Yeah not alot of people use 3 String Basses anymore cause Basses with 4 or 5 strings are much more enjoyable after alot of updates.

  • @moresalesoryourmoneyback

    It's NOT the gut strings that sound nice. It's Thomas who sounds great.
    Try gut strings one day. They sound like a chainsaw.
