    The ibex is the king of the Alps, famed for its curved horns and extreme climbing skills. But for centuries, these mountain goats were hunted by humans - to the very brink of extinction. A royal hunting reserve in Italy saved the Alpine ibex, but is climate change now threatening them all over again? We tell the story of their remarkable comeback and ask what the future might hold.
    👉🏽 Gran Paradiso National Park is on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, a program of best practice for conservation. It’s also one of the WWF’s Alpine “gemstones”, areas that have been identified as in need of urgent protection. The hope is that classifications like this will raise awareness and save the ibex and many alpine species. Visit GPNP's website to find out more about their conservation work: www.pngp.it/en/ . Apparently, the wild goat is an ibex, it is basically known as the West Asian Ibex, an ibex is any goat that belongs to the genus Capra, there are six species of ibex, the West Asian Ibex/Wild Goat (Capra aegagrus), the Himalayan Ibex (Capra himalayensis), the Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex), the Iberian Ibex (Capra pyrenaica), the Nubian Ibex (Capra nubiana), and the Walia Ibex (Capra walie), in fact, because the West Asian Ibex (aka Wild Goat) is the direct ancestor of the Domestic Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus), the domestic goat is an ibex.

    • @Kenan-Z
      @Kenan-Z Před 2 lety +2

      @@sanjivjhangiani3243 They can, but they prefer not to take such needless risks for they have no taste for "extreme goating". Of course, from time to time they make small tricks just to amuse occasional guests from "Hindistan" ("India" in Turkish). The umbrella organization of Turkish wild goats, ARCGOT (Association of Responsible and Concerned Goats of Türkiye), regularly conducts awareness-raising events for "kids", discouraging them from taking lethal risks and from climbing man-made monuments. And they do this not by the tough way, but by giving the kids a "kid glove" treatment, informing them of the dangers of the ways of their crazy Ibex cousins.

    There actually was a surviving population of Ibex outside of Italy in France during the 19th century in the Vanoise valleys. It would later become a French national park and the park is adjacent to the Gran Paradiso national park right across allowing for the two population to exchange genetics which was crucial in their recovery. I was extremely lucky to witness an Ibex on my recent stay there, they are incredible creatures!

      @r-t 92, there are actually six ibex species, the West Asian Ibex (Capra aegagrus), the Himalayan Ibex (Capra himalayensis (formerly Capra sibirica)), the Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex), the Iberian Ibex (Capra pyrenaica), the Nubian Ibex (Capra nubiana), and the Walia Ibex (Capra walie), the former out of the six species is also known as the Wild Goat, in fact it is the ancestor of the Domestic Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus), meaning the Domestic Goat is actually an ibex, an ibex is any goat that belongs to the genus Capra.

      Especially here in Himalayas
      There are still many species of domestic goats almost similar to native ibex
      The only exception is smaller horns and half the ability of surviving harsh Himalayan winters alone

      The turs and markhor are the only goats not considered ibexes since they are not part of the genus Capra, but instead two separate genera being Brachyceros and Aegoceros respectively.

    If Alpine Ibexs are still at huge risk from climate change and have such drastically decreased genetic diversity then they'll have less chance of being able to adapt to the changes as once a gene is lost from the genepool it can't just come back. It sounds like the Alpine Ibex is still facing a huge risk of extinction from humans.

    A great story is of successful conservation. The world needs to emulate this model of distribution. Especially in India, where the Gujarat government is denying to distribute or spread the population of its lions to other states like Madhya Pradesh, which proved potential habitat range for lions, despite MP state's repeated requests for the past 2 decades. The consequence, overpopulation, inbreeding, and lion population is dying with various diseases in Gujarat. What Gujarat government say to all this, they say its 'Gujarat's pride' they wouldn't like sharing or distributing their lions to other states which otherwise would have raised the chances of survival also increasing their healthy living and increased habitat range.
