I had a college professor who gave me a failing grade on a project because I didn’t hear him ask us for it. About 10 minutes into class I asked him with my project in hand if there was a pile or something I was suppose to place it in and he said he already asked for it and I apologized and said I must not have heard him. It was only the second day of class and arriving was still a chaotic scene and he never said his ‘no late work’ was THAT strict. FYI on day one he bragged about how 15% or less passes his class. The previous quarter only had 3 people pass everyone else dropped out.

I can't really imagine what the OP was going through. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders, seems like she's normally a positive person, but is understandably frustrated by circumstances beyond anyone's control. From the outside, we have a desire to "fix" things or at least make others feel better when they're going through something. However, we can never feel what another is feeling. When my three year old daughter passed, I had a pregnant wife and two other small children to help through it. Feeling bad was better for me than trying to feel good or feel nothing. That's OK because that bad feeling also reminded me of all the love we shared in that short time.
You don't really want to hear that things will get better because sometimes all you can do to keep it together is concentrate on the present and the present sucks. She is being strong. However, there's a weight that staggers even the strongest person in the world. She seems like someone who will push through to the other side, but can only focus on today at the moment.
Maybe one day she'll see that even if it wasn't the relationship she planned on, there was love and affection which is more than a lot of people get. He was dying, but still thought of your well being first. Hopefully, you can hold on to knowing someone loved you that much. You should also be proud for helping protect his child from an abusive and neglectful parent. Maybe that's romanticizing a bit, and I know you're not ready to hear that sort of stuff but maybe some day down the road, you'll be in a position to romanticize things just little. There is a healthy level of illusion we can let in at the end of the day.

first story made me think of a teacher i had. in grade 10 i did an alternate fashion and design course, which was focused on learning sewing skills, art, and fashion design, as well as having english and social studies included. for the final project, we were each supposed to design and make 3 full outfits. part of the process was picking out fabrics online (we had one fabric store in town, and it was owned by my teacher and didn't have a huge selection) and then give our fabric orders to her. i of course did this, but as everyone was getting their fabrics i got.. three of mine. i wasn't able to complete my final project, but i did make each piece i did get the fabric for. my teacher just said that i never gave her my fabric order for the rest but i most definitely did. she was also pretty transphobic, and grade 10 was the first year of my transition (im a trans man) so not only did she not order my fabrics and blame me, she would constantly misgender and deadname me despite all my classmates correcting her, and my mom coming into the school multiple times to talk to admin. her fabric store has since closed btw, which while its much harder to get fabric here now, i cant help but get some joy from that. i did well enough otherwise in that class that i actually got a pretty good mark, but not being able to complete the final project definitely took a hit, as well as being incredibly disappointing since i was really excited about my designs

My guess? She was a control freak, and it made her feel like she had "power" over her students, so she did it to act like a petty little tyrant.
My shitty excuse for an uncle treated my cousin the same way, trying to control literally every aspect of her life, until my aunt kicked him to the curb (and once my cousin turned 18, she legally cut herself off from him entirely. She refuses to even call him her "dad" or "father", she just dismissively refers to him by his first name). The guy is a total pariah to our entire family, and the guy's father literally disowned him. He was *that* bad.
On another note, how did that teacher think she would get away with it if half of her class inexplicably failed her class? People *would* start asking questions, *especially* parents, particularly if the parents were told that the teacher herself lost the papers and failed the students to cover her own ass, especially if those students could prove to their parents that they *had* done the work by showing them the timestamps for the online copies of the papers.
That teacher was an idiot for thinking that she *wouldn't* get caught. But her having tenure might have made her feel complacent and "untouchable". Though, personally, I think the very concept of "tenure" is stupid.

That reminds me of my high school teacher, she was always late to her own classroom. After lunch, we’re all waiting on her. When she finally came after the second bell rang, she told us we’re late. When we finally came in the classroom, she realized she forgot to pass out the homework papers day before. Instead of blaming her self, she 100% places the blame on her students, and some of us got Saturday school. When Monday came she was late again, I went through the other classroom because our classroom is connected to another ones. The question is turned on her because of her lateness. I ended up fighting against the corrupt teacher, and she ended up crying after that. I pretty much won the argument against her, I even put a dent on a door what made my hand bleed. I told her “next time, that would be her face. I would make sure she’ll never look in the mirror, nor teach ever again”, my classmates told me I took it too far, I say she pretty much deserved it. Even some of my classmates are crying, because it was the fist time I’ve yelled towards a teacher. They told me I’ve mentally abused her, it was actually karma. And I made her write on the white board 100+ times and say it out loud to give her a Lesson after school, and I was watching every word she put on the white board “I would never be late to my own classroom, and blame it on my students”.
Ps: I was the quiet kid, in a 1.5 star review high school. Martin Luther king high, is the most corrupt school in the RUSD learns school district. Graduated with a certificate of completion back in 2016, currently doing my GED to get my diploma. And hopefully get in the Navy getting my E3 seaman, skipping few ranks because my Eagle Scout rank. Let’s just hope I get in the Navy.

2nd story: I can't help but think how amazing it is that she got to have a baby by the man who loved her for his whole life! Please don't think that's romantic clap-trap... I honestly don't mean it that way. I am a mother of two, one of whom was born when I was 37 and is profoundly delayed and disabled. My husband is a lot older than I and is fading away on me, as dependent now as is our younger boy.
And yet... children are still the absolute best gift that a person can be loaned! (Loaned, because you raise them, hopefully functional, and give them on to the world one day.)
They are our chance to pay everything forward... And they are our chance to change a bad past.
Children are expensive and a lot of hard physical work! - They are endless sources of worry and they make you think way too hard sometimes. - - And they are literal miracles that we can hold for a while before we turn them loose on the expectant world.
I wish and pray all the best for this woman and her family.

the teachers who are like Mrs. Smith are like that because the reason they become a teacher is because they could not get any other job and it is that frustration that they vent on the students

I had a teacher who lost our year 10 English exams and marked us on the previous years exams... Yeah the actual year I tried my best in an exam. As someone who struggled with English I actually did really well in the end of year exam as I actually attempted my very best on it instead of my substandard attempts that were c grades average. No wonder I gave up on English as a class after that even at other schools my confidence as a kid in that subject with all the learning difficulties I had on top of it really says a lot about the quality of the teacher especially at a private school.
It's most important that teachers do their best to encourage students to get the best results from them and not lame excuses for poor teaching ability. Anyway in my final year I did rather well despite the useless teachers in my life, I did have many awesome brilliant teachers who helped me to flourish
