On April, 14th, 2009, the Boston Section of the Audio Engineering Society hosted a Hands-On Workshop “Building a Cable Tester” with Andrew Lypps in the Electronics Lab at the New England Institute of Art.
Attendees received kits that were prepared in advance. These kits included all the parts/supplies necessary to build the cable tester as well as an instruction booklet including a block diagram.
Andrew started by giving a brief introduction of the project. He outlined the pin connections for each of the four connector types used on the cable tester; ¼” TRS, XLR, RCA and MIDI. He explained the proper way to connect the three LED’s and how to know whether the connection is correct or not using the three test switches.
Andrew described two additional modifications that could be done; testing for phantom power and checking for the presence of MIDI data. Andrew added these modifications to his pre-built prototype while the attendees were working on assembling their projects. These modifications would also outlined in the instructions. Cable testers were completed successfully within the designated time. Additional kits are available for purchase for $35.
Andrew Lypps has accumulated over 25 years of professional audio and event staging experience. This includes commercial recording studio, live sound, education and broadcast facilities design and installation. Additionally he has a depth of experience in audio production, engineering, and audio electronics design and repair. For the last ten years he has held the position of Audio Systems Engineer at the New England Institute of Art where he provides support for all audio technology and occasionally teaches.
