  • How to research for a paper using academic databases and academic journals. We look at what is an academic journal and a peer-reviewed journal, what search terms to use, how to choose what databases to search, etc. This is great for research papers for university and college.

The thing I'm having trouble with is finding key terms to make my searches more specific. Sometimes, I don't know enough about a topic to know a term to search for. I've been thinking of using wikipedia to help me learn more terms with a subject but sometimes it's not enough. My researching can go on longer than I have to finish my paper and I can barely find one relevant article.

If you find yourself in this situation, take a look at papers that are reference in your area of study and take a note of the keywords used. Then search a thesaurus/vocabulary of authorized terms you can find related terms or synonimous that also have a certain amount of consensus. This might help.

Hello I found this very helpful as I have been struggling with finding research that is accessible. However I have two areas where I need help, Please could you help me with info on how to find reviews for a article in order to critique it, it's taking me hours? My next struggle is how to identify research that is significant in the field I.e psychology?
    Thanks in advance

I'm sorry for the late reply. Your criterio "significant in the field of psychology" is way too broad. You'd need to define it further. Are you talking about the subfield of social cognition? Maybe, you're talking about memory and processing of information in which case cognitive science would be the right field. After you're sure about the main subfield, then you'd need to think about the main recent questions that you're trying to find answer to. Only be defining the main questions and fields, can you even begin to identify what research is significant for (let alone relevant to) your questions.
