Yeah, It does seem like they have built this in though. It bolds words that are close synonym of the word I am searching for.

Does Google Scholar search the full text of papers that are not open access?

It probably doesn't even search the full text of open access papers. It is primarily looking in the titles and the abstracts of these papers for keywords not the full text.
