  • In this video I run the Strymon BigSky pedal into the following four synths:
    1. Moog Memorymoog
    2. Yamaha DX7
    3. Korg Monologue
    4. Casio VL-1
    Four keyboards of quite different prices, but the BigSky produces an amazingly beautiful sound with all four :)
    0:56 Wthat's in the box
    3:01 Moog Memorymoog through BigSky
    4:52 Yamaha DX7 through BigSky
    6:22 Korg Monologue through BigSky
    7:58 Casio VL-1 through BigSky

    Trust Me - Its Incredible. I just got mine about 3 months ago. I am still on Cloud 9. Its a: Total Inspiration Machine. Its more then a Phenomenal Reverb Pedal, its a Synth Pad, Echo Machine - too. It has a Cab Sim on the rear. Infinite Hold & Freeze. It is even better ( hearing it in person ) then I was expecting, and Strymon is So Helpful & Professional . . . with their Tech Support & Customer Service - They have "Earned my Business" - I will be purchasing a Zuma for the Holidays. ( no affiliation - just my honest experience )

    The best video on the Big Sky and synths that I could find. Thanks for the great vibes. I did a live stream on it yesterday and it's - I repeat myself - not going to overlap with the multitude of plug-ins and things we have. The Big Sky is legendary (so is the Timeline, which you have a great video for, too).
    When you already own one and you watch a video and it makes you wanna go play, you know it's good stuff ;)

    It's time to stop calling these "guitar pedals" and start calling them effects processors, considering rack mount processors are an abandoned technology these days, and pedals are clearly the new format. It's less misleading to other instrumentalists.

      I still wish they'd return with rack units. Or, like MOTU does: half rack units that can be linked side by side. My desk is full, rack space is more easily added.

    Bigsky is the Ambient/New Age pedal. I love all your reviews... I'm a guitarist that's been teaching myself to play keys on a Yamaha DX7 FDII and a Yamaha Stage 70. After watching many of your reviews and lessons on soundscapes I've realized layering synths is what I love. I'm considering buying a Roland JD-XA... I want the weighted keys of the DS88, but can't stand how limited and canned it sounds and i have weighted keys on my stage piano. I've really learned a lot from your videos, thank you so much :)

    i got the arturia microfreak abougt a year ago and i have loved that little synth which is surprisingly deep. i also love the periodic firmware updates that have, so far, given me 5 new synth engines at no cost. my only quibble with it is the lack of any onboard effects. i'd been looking at getting some less expensive effects pedal for it but the more i read and hear about the bigsky the more i think i'm going to get it. i have several patches that could only be enhanced by a touch of bigsky.
    thanks for a beautiful demonstration of some of the possibilities.

On top of that I have two other effects units patched into the mixing desk so I might try using a combo of different effects. If it made the Casio sound great and a Moog sound better then I could only imagine what it will be like on the Roland gear.

    I think it sounds great. Makes total sense to use high quality guitar pedals on old synths, especially when most synths were mono and the outputs were basically dry. I see you were using your BigSky as a mono to stereo converter which is one advantage right there. At least with pedal gear you get something you can sit on a table top and does not have a bunch of sharp edges like rack gear. You don't really need gear made with balanced jacks on line level synths either, it's kind of a waste of money so I think you made a wise decision and hope you get many years of service. ciao.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom

    Montana calls itself the "Big Sky" state because the land is so flat and there is nothing there. So the sky rises from the horizon 360 degrees around. It is an awesome blue dome visual experience; this pedal has a similar aural effect.

    I’m surprised nobody mentions the smaller Strymon Bluesky which sounds similarly awesome. I thought about buying the bigsky for my Moog Sub37 but ended up buying a used Bluesky instead. It has simpler controls and no presets besides one favorite. You can get them for roughly half the price of the Bigsky and they also have the shimmer reverb. To be honest I ended up not using the shimmer setting much because as someone else mentioned while it’s nice it tends to sound the same and gets old after a while. But I’m quite happy with the Bluesky. Sounds just as amazing.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  Před 6 lety

      The BlueSky is definitely the same high quality, if you don't have the budget or need the extra modes and features of the BigSky. P.S. On the BigSky, you can edit the shimmer note intervals so it doesn't always sound the same.

  • @Dr_Satan
    @Dr_Satan Před 6 lety

    If it's like the smaller strymon pedals, you have to move a little PCB jumper inside to enable stereo input. I think watching you put the feets over the screws on the bottom is what made me think to mention that, lol.
