  • Last time, we looked at the Gateway Profile 5.5, an "ugly" yet interesting All-In-One computer. Now, we're trying out a few different operating systems to see which ones the Profile can run.

    My school still uses these for Windows 10. I told the school board and "we don't have enough money for new computers". Although we do have enough for an air conditioner in the teacher's lounge, principal office, and superintendent office. As well as new vending machines 4 in the hallways, 2 in lunch room, and 1 in the auditorium (not gym, the place where we go for announcements)). They charge $1.25 for M&Ms, $2.00 for sodas, $2.75 for a Hershey bar, and $2.50 for chips.
    By the way, the computers were originally donated and only 9 of them were bought with fundraisers. We have 15 in total in the library.
    I asked if there was a way we could do a fundraiser for newer computers, and was told that it'd be just too expensive...

    -Purble Place (an obscure vista game)
    -music and photos that used to come for free with Windows
    -wordart feature, not only the well-known 97 Rainbow version, but also the ones that came before and after (the current one has all the old features plus glow bevel and reflection)

    • @IanC14
      @IanC14 Před 5 lety +9

      Nvidia yes, but AMD now have open source drivers for the GCN series and above. And there's an open source project for earlier cards too. The old closed source drivers aren't support any more by AMD, though they do have closed source drivers based on the AMDGPU open source project if you need them.

    • @yellowcrash10
      @yellowcrash10 Před 5 lety +3

      The open source graphics drivers still detect the correct display properties, so the proprietary drivers are only needed to get the full power out of the graphics card. Windows never detects the correct display properties without the drivers.

It has multiple drivers built into the kernel, so it supports a lot of hardware out of the box. The downside is that installing missing drivers can be really *really* difficult, so sometimes it's easier to try different distros that might have better drivers for your machine. Great video btw!

    Are Ubuntu and Lubuntu really different distros? If a distro is a sub-category of the GNU operating system, then Ubuntu's "flavours", as they call them, should be a further sub-category. I mean, all it does is change the desktop environment, you could do it on a regular Ubuntu installation by installing a few packages.

      They're different distros, technically. Ubuntu is the base, all ubuntu flavours uses base ubuntu and build on top of it. Teams linked to each other but they have a bit freedom. LTS support time are different and supported hardware can change. For example Ubuntu does not support 32bit (unless you install it with base install and build on top of it) but Lubuntu does etc... Basicly they're a big really strange family.

    Getting the drivers right is extremely tricky on installing linux on old hardware, but once figured out it runs decently.
    Linux seriously needs a better driver model.

    5:48 You can clearly see that Linux is using the proper driver for your GPU, including (probably*) graphics acceleration.
    (I'm saying probably here because the screen only shows the i915 kernel module being loaded. The libGL(Mesa) also needs to bre installed and have support for this GPU compiled in, but that's very likely.)

    overall performance on Windows 8/10 can be greatly improved by simply tweaking a couple system files, as for the graphic driver there are several custom drivers online, IF you are not willing to look/try them up by hand you can use "Snappy Driver Installer" free suite to automate the process.
    With that method (plus a patch to bypass NX bit restriction in the installer files) I was able to install W10 enterprise 32 bit on a P478 Celeron based system from 2003 @ 2.8GHz. and 1GB DDR RAM sporting an intel graphics manger 82815!!!!

    I could be wrong but I think there is a PCMCIA external GPU adapter, mount, think on a Chinese site. Can you do a follow up using that and a cheap GPU like the GT 1030 or RX 550.

    Is this computer an intel pentium 4 as a cpu processor? I have an old alienware area 51-m 766 with a pentium 4 (pre-hyperthreading) so it always throws up an error that "your pc needs to restart". Is you machine the hyperthreading pentium 4? Because The hyperthreading pentium 4 can install windows 8/10 just fine from what I ahve researched
