      Minish It looks like LGR, and sounds almost like LGR. Even the music sounds like LGR and the keyboard typing in the beginning sounds like lazy typing from LGR, all slow and whatnot. But beware, beware your ears and eyes, your thoughts and the knowledge that you think you have, for this is NOT LGR! This is not LGR... This is not...

    • @amfram
      @amfram Před 5 lety

      How the hell is this at all similar to LGR? LGR largely revolves around reviewing and showing off old technology, Science Elf is a channel more based on retrospectives and while yes they cover obscure technology too the presentation is very different.

    You forgot about the Hyper-Text Pizza Ordering Protocol (HTPOP), which would've allowed computers to order pizza easily and quickly without the limitations of HTTP. However, it never exactly materialized, since it was ultimately decided that HTTP would be better suited for this, and would be more compatible.

    I forgot the name of the movie, but I remember at the start of the movie, the main character (Sandra Bullock) ordered pizza via computer, and the site shows look like an early version of online pizza delivery website. Don't if that was Pizza Hut back then.

    Alright, here's a subtle thing not many people are acknowledging but as someone who knows too much about overly-specific tech history:
    The bit at the start with the computer "ordering its own pizza", is in reality a *speech synthesis* system test. It was meant to help people with vocal problems communicate verbally. They hooked the computer up to a phone and dialed the local pizza joint. There was no actual data transfer like the gag implies. (This actually confused me as I was in fact one of the many people who didn't catch on to this being a joke until halfway through.)
    And yes, it actually succeeded!

    I actually think this would be excellent and fun material to teach kids some historical computer facts. You would simply say: "Here's a little video for you to watch. I'm sure you'll have fun with that". And when the video is over, you would go: "Well, some of you might have figured out all of this was not created to just order pizzas. But, other than that, you get the picture, right?"... I'm sure they would laugh and would be eager to watch it again. Kids love to be treated as people capable of using their wits like adults.

    I think you will want to fact check a lot of this stuff. There are a few things early on that I let slide but they are coming more and more frequently. Like hearing the words on the modem - this isn't how modems work and clearly, they are using a speech synthesizer. Maybe they figured out how to tune the modem sounds to synthesize speech?
    That being said, it's a fun concept to display the history of computer science by examining the history of a peripheral purpose such as online pizza ordering.
