  • This film - captured between 1955-1956 and presented in a full frame scan of the original 70 year old 8mm home movie - shows scenes from Sacramento's West End during the days before redevelopment would change the face of Sacramento forever. We see men milling about and sleeping on the sidewalk; police and fire trucks driving through the neighborhood; street scenes; Tower Bridge; passing trains; the intersection of 4th and L streets; Japantown; people walking; street scenes shot from a car while driving; K Street decorated for Christmas; closed businesses; businesses with "Moving" and "Sale" signs; Taylor's Drug Store; Ouye's Pharmacy; houses; and an official demolition ceremony with speakers (a business behind the ceremony has a sign up that says "You may be next"). There are also shots of newspaper ads and articles about redevelopment, Proposition B, and the West End's demolition.
From the Harold N. Ouye collection (MS195) at the Center for Sacramento History.
