A lot of people think of this film as a love story, which it is...but what I don't think a lot of people pick up on is that it's actually not really about the romantic love which Elaine and Peter feel for each other. It's far more about the love and support which Elaine and Teresa have for each other as friends. When Elaine comes back from Russia -- deep down, I'm a romantic but I know that this world is not built for romantics and not kind to them and I have the sinking feeling that Elaine will only find heartbreak in Russia -- she'll need and value Teresa's friendship all the more.
Reminds me of a particular arthouse cinema where I saw so many great '80's films: 'Repo Man, ' 'Paris, Texas,' 'My Beautiful Launderette,' 'Buster,' 'Blue Velvet,' 'Mona Lisa,' 'Liquid Sky' ... the list goes on, but this film was among the very best. Thanks for the memories. Loved, loved seeing it again, positively!
As a result of acting out a romantic relationship on camera or on stage day after day, a lot of actors end up falling in love with their co-stars behind the scenes. It doesn't sound as if that happened in this instance -- but then they met again and fell in love 30 years later. One wonders exactly what was different back then so that the chemistry on screen evidently didn't take off screen...but did 30 years later.
Peter Firth said they dated for a short time right after the filming of the movie, too. I just found out yesterday that they're a couple, I think that is fantastic!
I was so excited to find this movie, I love it and couldn't find it to rent or even buy. After I watched it, I found an interview with Alexandra Pigg and Peter Firth and I couldn't believe it - they got married 5 years ago!
I,ve just cast this film to my tv. Such brilliant quality, couldn,t be better if i,d watched it on dvd. Ahhh ....bronski beat brings back so many 80,s memories.
Brilliant movie, one of the oldest human tales, a boy and a girl from different waring tribes fall in love, cannot live apart and with a little help along the way are united at last.
we were nieive back then.. beleiving the hype it REALLY was a letter to 'breznev' i ws young in the 80's a teen but people now still wear masks and beleive everything God speed
Chickens that lays no more eggs are soup chickens. 🤞said my grandpa !!!! But the one that does, You enjoy 😊 Victory for the righteous ones 💪. They make you grow!!!!
The primary focus of this film is not really the relationship between and Elaine and Peter but the relationship between Elaine and Teresa (and other people). Unfortunately, the reality is that what awaits Elaine in Russia is probably not good. It's quite possible that the man from the home office is telling the truth when he says that Peter is already married. It's not that hard to understand why Peter might have wanted to indulge in an escapist romantic idyll with Elaine and for a time allow himself to believe in it, especially if his marriage isn't happy. Even if Peter is not married, the chances that Elaine will be happy in Russia are slim since Peter is a sailor and will be gone most of the time. There's even a chance that the government will take Elaine hostage and use her as a bargaining chip. One of the alluring aspects of fiction is that you can make anything you want happen...but real life is not like that. Fiction is essentially a form of magical (or at least wishful) thinking which we use out of a desire to redress life's many injustices, even if only in our imaginations.
Most of the USSR's Black Sea coast gained independence as the Ukraine just 6 years after this movie took place. (It wouldn't be a great place to be now for sure, but for over 30 years it would have been okay.)
Wonderful film. I love the dance scene 25:09. Goof: 28:00 after Elaine and Teresa pee, the water in the toilet is still clear. Or did they drink that much beer?

A tender and a heartwarming gem of a movie.
Watched it after 1985.
Such a fantastic film... Never get fed up with watching this...
Me either. Just love it.
Peter Firth and Alexandra Pigg started dating 30 years after playing the pair of lovers. Heartwarming or what?
Sometimes love make us wait
They married in 2017

Had some of the old Liverpool Spirit this film, ( SEAPORT ) and proper Liverpool Humour! AYE Depressing Days work wise but we got by.
My absolute fav film. I think Margi Clarke plays a wonderful part! She’s fab! 💗🌸💗🌸💗🌸💗
Really enjoyed this down to earth British film. What a stunner Margi Clarke is.
Iggy Navarro who played President of The Soviet Union was Shake Hands in The Boys From The Blackstuff.
Excellent spot there mate!
There was no 'President' of the Soviet Union at this time. Brezhnev was General Secretary of the Communist Party and Chairman of the Supreme Soviet.
