I wish you included that Venus informed them of her withdrawal that morning but the tournament didn't approve the withdrawal until 4 minutes before the match. Venus didn't just wait until the match was to start and pullout. The organizers at that time did that because they were trying to urge Venus to play injured because the tickets were already sold.

She has to do that, per the rules of the WTA......truth be told, most tennis players struggle with minor injuries for most of the year. I despised how they played this out, and made it look orchestrated. I am thankful these women rose above, and have had such amazing careers.

Venus actually told them the day before she didn’t think she would be able to play. They held out because the wouldn’t be able to sell tickets if they had announced it earlier. You’re right they waited until minutes before they were set to play to announce it. They had everyone believing that the dad pill Venus out at the last minute. To add injury to insult when everyone was attacking Serena and her family the tournament sponsernd and director fail to step in and defend them. That’s why they boycotted Indian Wells so long.

@@magnetmac1 The way she carried herself in a smug manner, her lack of respect for her peers and veterans, and just her overall attitude in general. Don’t get me wrong, I grew to like her enough to be able to tolerate her, even when she did reveal more of her true character as her career progressed. I enjoyed watching her matches over the years, but at the end of the day she was definitely a psychopath.

Serena Williams was 19 yrs old when she was needlessly jeered at the 2001 Indian Wells. She was young, drama-free, no problem with her fellow tennis athletes. At the time she was nothing like you negatively described her.
So, I ask again - why do you think a young teenage Serena wasn't likeable at a time when there was no controversy around her?

I don't think Venus's withdrawal was a coincidence, not saying their dad is to blame. Maybe they didn't want to go against each other due to concerns that it would cause tension in their relationship, since they both are very competitive tennis players. I respect them boycotting the Indian Wells because who wants to face racism? Especially in a line of work, they should be able to play comfortably without receiving hate from a crowd that they spend hours and hours entertaining.

That is far from the truth what you just said. Venus informed them the day before about her knee and they said wait until tomorrow to see how it’s doing. Early that morning she told them she wasn’t going to be able to play and they still waited until minutes before the tournament to announce she pulled out. The fans were upset at spending money to watch them and had to watch a doubles tournament. Instead of the tournament directors trying to defend them they allowed them to be called names, racial slurs and booed at. it was awful and that’s why they boycotted.
