How to fillet a northern pike including removing the Y bones. Segment from the Real Outdoors episode...SHORELUNCH which will be airing in January of 2012.
This is, hands down bar none, THE BEST fillet instructions on removing Y bones from a northern pike on the entire internet. Every other video is tedious, rib-cage attached, and requires so many extra unnecessary cuts. This is exactly how i remove Y bones from a pike, and have been for over 30 years. Im honestly surprised this video hasn't gone viral. Good job, eh!
I used your technique in a video of mine last week. It came out PERFECT! A nice 23" pike through the ice, it was so delicious and not a single bone. Great technique.
I like the way that you started along the backbone on the second fillet before flipping it. I have always had a hard time with the second fillet since the fish is not as stout anymore. Thanks for the vid!
Excellent tutorial, and I like the outdoor fillet table, will be doing this myself this week. Thank you ! Of the 2 northern fillet methods I like this one best, less waste and less steps. I spent hours filleting big fish in the Florida Keys at a fishery. This direct method visually targets the Y Bones after the two fillets are removed. No meat left on the bones, awesome !!
Much appreciated!! Always new there was a better way, I've been doing it wrong, got 3 to do and now to do it the right way. Thank you very very much!!! Keep em coming,...
Followed for years and clean pike better than anyone I know just showed my bf this video after taking him fishing for the first time since he was a kid he didn’t catch anything but I let him clean one of mine and he did a phenomenal job love Donald Inkster 💕💕💕
I haven't caught a pike yet as I live in Alabama and it is generally too warm for them here. However, I have seen many videos in preparation and this one is the tops. You got more usable meat off of your fillet than anyone I've seen. Good job.
Gord, the guy in the video, has filleted many a pike and always seems to make it look simple. The method he uses is the only one I've ever really tried.
Well, I watched this video about a hundred times before going up to the BWCA last week, and felt prepared to eat some delicious pike. We caught three beautiful pike, but damned if I could fillet them this cleanly! I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I ended up with chunks that still had plenty of bones in them. It's a lot harder cleaning pike when they're all slimy and you're trying to do it across the bottom of a slick canoe!
Good video. One more thing I would add: make sure you trim off the belly fat. If you leave it on the meat will have more of a gamey taste to the pieces that are cooked with the belly fat on.
That little site looks pretty familiar. I got a nice pike myself today and I'm going to try your technique. I hope I figure it out. I love pike but throw them back because I can't clean em. Time to try again. Thanks, eh.
Can you tell me where your fillet a walleye video is at if you have one out? Have watched others but seems like so much meat is wasted; I like the way you do it.
Brian Whitens Agreed Northerns are my favorite fish in every way. I got hooked by a 21 pounder on Kabetogama when I was 17. I stuffed that one and it burned up in a house fire, I'm going back to the Kab after 30 years. I only keep and eat small ones now, I let the big ones go back home.
Blayde Keel Good, for you. I keep the smallest possible as well. They found that letting the bigger fish go pays dividends in the future population. You don't need a 40 inch pike to have a great meal.
I got really good at filleting this year based on this video, my technique is a little different and I couldn't get away from it, Im faster with mine but I also perfected my technique (because of this video) I get one more piece of what I call a tenderloin off the top of the y bones (I want to get everything from my fish). Strangely enough there were odd bones left in the front of my small mouth fillets. any clues to this? Do they have a short section of y bones near the gills? At any rate thanks for the tips, I let a 22 inch Walleye go at kettle falls, my kids were having a fit but we got a bunch of Smallmouth and Northerns, they tasted good. I wish we had fish like that in Nebraska. Oh well I am also good at cleaning and preparing Bullheads and Catfish from muddy creeks the secret is soaking them in a little lemon juice in a tub of water over night, it neutralizes the muddy taste.
Blayde Keel Next time you catch a Northern, make what we call a north woods cigar, put the fillet's in tinfoil with lemons, onion and spices if you choose. Fold up the foil and put it on hot coals of a fire. and let it bake. I Catch a lot of small and largemouth, and I have the same problem. You should not have more than one walleye a month anyway.
You don't have to throw it away. You could for example boil (better with steam) those 2 lines with bones, then with patience you break them into pieces removing all the bones from them, and you can mix that flesh with some sauce, for example anchovy-capers-olive oil-a little garlic is good (you cut them into small pieces, you cook that sauce few minutes and then you pour it on the fish). Of course you can do it if you have enough flesh, for example from at least 2-3 nice pikes.
Almost perfect except, if instead of going down the lateral line, I start by following the line of bones that are just above the lateral line and pull some of the back meat away first. THEN get under those Y bones. And you basically have a little string of bones left over. There is still some waste here.
pike is not a poisonous fish. young pikes (2-3kg) taste really nice with seasoning and mayo on top. these species (and perch, my favorite fish) can survive in very polluted waters so make sure you know it came from clean water if you want to eat it
Tristan Cooper smoke them, the meat will naturally pull away from the bones, Obviously you would need to have caught and cleaned a lot of pike to make that effort worth while.
Wrong technique amond hundreds other. Best pike filleter comes from Finland. Look at the video: RISTO KOSONEN KALANKÄSITTELY. He is absolutely the best pike filleter pro in the world. Easy and fast with very little wate.
This is by far the best pike cleaning video out there.
Agreed.

Holy cow. Ive been watching video after video on y bones removal. This one is magic. Love it.
Best video yet on these animals, well done!😉
Excellent video thanks! From a fellow Canadian

Wow this must have been the easiest way to fillet a northern pike. Thank you very much for uploading will try this method next time!
I watch a lots of video fillet pike but this is the best i ever watch...

Great video guys. Very helpful. Thanks a lot!
Great video I really did enjoy it keep them coming.
Awesome, like your other video too on northern fillets. This is the best way to do it, thank you for sharing.
Best method ive seen thanks man!
Gord, the guy in the video, has filleted many a pike and always seems to make it look simple. The method he uses is the only one I've ever really tried.
Dud this video is excellent. Easy to follow. Got it in one shot. 5 starts.

Thanks been needing to learn this for a while.
I love this video! :) I've filled countless fish, but I still don't quite have the hang of it. Thanks for the awesome video. :)
Thanks much for the compliments!!
Excellent! Thx for uploading :)
Great video we will be using this technique in the BWCA this June 🎣🎣
Nice way to do it,thanks a bunch guiding in 3 days can't wait, got any lake trout videos
I loved your video on a pike
Great video, thanks
awesome video!
Wow this is the best way I've ever seen, always wondered how to get rid of those darn y bones, those make the pike impossible to eat lol
Good video. One more thing I would add: make sure you trim off the belly fat. If you leave it on the meat will have more of a gamey taste to the pieces that are cooked with the belly fat on.
The efficiency is an art form
Cant wait to try this technique when I get up to my place in Georgian Bay this Spring
My cottage is right at the edge! Literally my backyard is the lake. I love fishing, caught 2-5 fish every time I went out. I used homemade lures
Great job, I find your teaching a lot easier another youtuber has the rib cage attached which really confused me
Best video so far! Exactly how I prepare my Jackfish too.
verry sharp knife, well done
Thanks helped a lot in Canada
Just caught a good bunch yesterday at Lake Francis Minnesota this video will help thats for sure :)
That little site looks pretty familiar. I got a nice pike myself today and I'm going to try your technique. I hope I figure it out. I love pike but throw them back because I can't clean em. Time to try again. Thanks, eh.
Good luck and Good eatin! Season open in only certain areas right now. Thanks for the feedback!
I've always wanted to try pie thanks for tips!
DolphinCraft 91 Yeah, pie is pretty good...
Love catching northern never kept them, always thought of them as too much of a hassle. Now I might have to try to filet one.
I have also found pike liver to be really tasty. It tastes like mussel and has the texture of liver. I eat that in addition to the fillets :)
Pike liver, I might try it on a small one. I pride myself on trying things and wasting as little as possible.
Good job 👍
hey thanks man for the vid, just catched a pike a hour ago and now I gotta do something with it. thanks thanks, my cat can get the excess carcass
Great video! only video that shows you can remove y- bone without using 2 cuts..
You made that look easy
Thanks!
Awesome video, I was looking to see if there was a better way to do it but I guess not, huh..., lol. Thanks for taking the time. LETS EAT!
Nice knife!
I emailed the Gord the filleter to find out. Will let you know. Thanks for watching.
Your knife looked really sharp. What would you recommend for a fixed blade filet knife?
I like Pike just as much as walleye. Just an extra step of cutting to perfection, but worth it:-)
StormLaker1975 Salmon is a lot better fish for cooking 😍😍😍
To me the pike and the pike perch are gross 😷😷😷
I like this much better than the 5 fillet method..
thanks useful video now I got to go catch me some good ol Michigan northerns tomorrow
Pinbones are nature's way of making you take smaller bites and not swallowing without chewing. Hence, pinbones are a benefit.
Thanks for watching!
Can you tell me where your fillet a walleye video is at if you have one out? Have watched others but seems like so much meat is wasted; I like the way you do it.
I suppose you could do something with it. Tough to deal with the bones though.
Thank you. I have always had such a rough time with these. Now if I could just find a SHARP KNIFE!!! heheh I swear every year I can never find one.
chances are you wont find one, you have to buy one 😊
I recommend a tutorial video. handling northern pike boneless It is called: RISTO KOSONEN : kalankasittely or haugifileeramine.
Those fillets were very clean! Did you by chance bleed out the fish before filleting? Thanks, Edward in Ohio
How did you dispatch the fish?
What brand of knife are you using?
You make that look easy lol
That knife looks really nice.Anyone know what model brand it is? Browning mabye?
Yes indeed, its a Browning.
I love fillet knives I thought my Rapala's were awesome, what brand is that??!!!
Thanks bud. Was just up in ear falls and threw back the northerns. After seeing yur vid, I'm wondering now what the heck was I thinking. lol
Ohhh...good eatin man!

Are the Y-bones in that entire line of meat you take off? Feels like I could just take the part out that only has the Y-bones and salvage that meat.
You don't have to throw it away. You could for example boil (better with steam) those 2 lines with bones, then with patience you break them into pieces removing all the bones from them, and you can mix that flesh with some sauce, for example anchovy-capers-olive oil-a little garlic is good (you cut them into small pieces, you cook that sauce few minutes and then you pour it on the fish).

what kind of knife is that?
Anyone know what knife he is using?
good
whoa done before I knew it
WELL HOW WAS THE FIRE DOING??.....
The line is longitudinal, not lateral. Lateral means "across", i.e. perpendicular to the spine.
+John Mianowski It's called the lateral line on a fish. Look it up.
u probably missed the cheeks on the pike. maybe I'm wrong or only walleye have checks with meat on them.
+Lucas Gamer they both
Just Walleye really
catch my northerns in deer rver minnesoata out in island lake recently caught a 31 incher 6.1 lb
Almost perfect except, if instead of going down the lateral line, I start by following the line of bones that are just above the lateral line and pull some of the back meat away first. THEN get under those Y bones. And you basically have a little string of bones left over. There is still some waste here.
That sounds better than wasting I'll try that thanks for the tip even tho the comment was a while ago just got into pike fishing
Actually not that long ago lol
Is there pin or lateral line bones too?
Exactly what I was thinking. He does such a nice job but wastes more than he has to
That Dramatic Ending Was Professional! (like if you agree)
i heard it poison.. is it rite?
the guy is showing you how to fillet a pike prior to cooking, and you wonder if it's a poisonous fish....
PastowanyKaban yupp so rite... i heard that aligator gar and pike are poisonous fish.. is it true?
pike is not a poisonous fish. young pikes (2-3kg) taste really nice with seasoning and mayo on top. these species (and perch, my favorite fish) can survive in very polluted waters so make sure you know it came from clean water if you want to eat it
stop trying to poison the poor man you troll
what are you talking about nice fish
Couldn't you put that strip of meat and bones in a stew if you absolutely wanted to?
Tristan Cooper smoke them, the meat will naturally pull away from the bones, Obviously you would need to have caught and cleaned a lot of pike to make that effort worth while.
You did good, but you wasted the cheeks of the fish bro.
Jeff hosat pike dont have cheek meet like walleyes.
Yes they do
Wrong technique amond hundreds other. Best pike filleter comes from Finland. Look at the video: RISTO KOSONEN KALANKÄSITTELY. He is absolutely the best pike filleter pro in the world. Easy and fast with very little wate.
holy shit i just wasted a lot of friken me the way i do it
This is a terrible way.
I saw a better video dude ..did it different filet it in 5 boneless pieces..
pitiful..at best D+
