Lyrics:
The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.
He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.
The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.
A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.
There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.
Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.
The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

The words and his voice completely immerse you in the world and makes one believe that such a place/time could have ever existed! Simply beautiful ❤

❤️💯
just go to wales.
It get my blood going and makes me wish to forge armour, sword and axe. And charge with a great Host of dwarfs against the armies of MORDOR!!!
It exists in my heart.
That man is a world treasure!!!! No gold nor silver could buy the likes of him. When he passes the light will surely dim.
He’s worth more than Mithril ☺️
@@ChiaraSiasat More than the Silmarils themselves.
>When he passes
When you pass the world will be less crass and be that much brighter. There will be several new colors. Well get on with it then.
When he passes the world will morn. For he will sit on his seat of gold and sliver in his Mountian kingdom of Moria.

Damn, dude. That was violent. Why? 😢
Hearing it from Gimli hits different 👏🏼
Closing your eyes to listen just makes it sing. You can hear it in that rumbling bass.
It’s just a beautiful thing to hear him recite this. He makes it so magical and full of awe. He truly is a master. I’d love to hear him do his own audiobook of Lotr. He makes it so immersive.
Are you sure about that? You wanna hear the likes of Arwen and Galadriel sounding this intense?
@@JPLOWMAN2 😂
For some reason I read your comment as “so magical and full of AXE”
Which, to be fair, also works.
YES I NEED THAT AUDIOBOOK IN MY LIFE!!!!! PLEASE!!!
Wow, just wow. This is like Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma. I’m not gonna lie, I teared up a bit.
Exactly!
Chuckles.
Before immersing myself more into opera, I would have also cited Pavarotti all the time. Although I still consider him amazing, he is often too technical and now I know other singers who make me tear up and actually relate to his characters’ emotions.
Rhys-Davies's voice when playing Gimli is one of the elements that made the LOTR film trilogy so magically poetic.
"These are the descendants of the house of Durin. They're noble, decent folk. And they're surprisingly cultured. They've got a deep love of the arts."
Now we need him to narrate Gimli's Glittering Caves monologue
If I’m not mistaken, when Matt interviewed John for the first time, he asked John to narrate the Glittering Caves monologue. I’m sure you’ll love it.
This Guy is an absolute legend!
You hear him recite, and suddenly green meadows appear all around him, dark forests and ancient creeks, tall mountains and deep chasms form, his words are like watching a movie! Amazing!
I have heard many good and even amazing readings/performances of the Song of Durin, but to have it recited by Gimli himself, as Tolkien portrayed in the original tale, is truly spellbinding!
I met him 20 years ago. He’s amazing!
I also met him about 8 years ago, along with Sean Astin
Dude, thank you so much for organazing all of this.
The movies made Gimli the comic relief and kinda put aside his Warrior-Poet persona.
Hearing John (who will always be Sallah, the greatest of friends) reading this is justice for the character! So yeah... thanks, man. Love the channel.
Baruk khazad!
Thanks so much!
Khazâd ai-mênu!
To me, he will always be Man Ray from Spongebob Squarepants.🤘🏻😎
Just goosebumps from head to toe.
He reads this so beautifully, literally gave me shivers. He’s such a legend!
This is great poem by Tolkien & great rendition by Mr. John Rhys-Davies. 💙 💙 💙
John Rhys-Davies is simply amazing! If only this speech could have been included in the films. Imagine a montage of the Halls of Moria while Gimli recites this verse to the Fellowship!
So sad more of Tolkien's incredible songs and poetry didn't make it into the movies.....I guess all the same people who wouldn't have wanted to sit through Old Tom Bombadil (a merry fellow, bright blue his jacket is and his boots are yellow) wouldn't have had the patience for this either unfortunately.
@@GraemeFaber-ls5wpSad indeed. Wouldnt suprise me if PJ wanted to add something like this, but with how short they had to cut down the movies its almost a marvel they became as good as they did. God damn movie companies lol
@@GraemeFaber-ls5wp I remember watching a review of the Hobbit films, and the guy was slamming the movie for having singing in it. Like, when did singing become an end-all-be-all for films? This guy was complaining about the films not drawing from the books, but then he has the nerve to say the singing was dumb and cringey? Like, bro, all the songs in the film are taken straight from the book! In fact, I wish they had put more songs in for the 2nd and 3rd film, both of which were lacking musically.
It is crazy to think that one man has created all this... Middle earth, different people and their own languages, all the unique songs, their history and mythology. Truly a masterpiece by J.R.R Tolkien.
I’ve heard this sung by so many different artists over the years but nothing compares to Gimli reciting the song of Durin. I will treasure this for years to come
My favorite LOTR character brought to life by the best actor for him. It's great to see Rhys-Davies still caring about the fans.
This man is living breathing magic. He came to CCXP in Sao Paulo and I was enchanted by him recounting a story of when the Hobbit boys wanted him to get a cast-tattoo and he so poetically declined lol
If I remember correctly, he asked his stunt double to go in his place.
Wonderful. I could listen to John recite this stuff all day. Pure escapism.
Speaking as a Welshman, John Rhys-Davis is an absolute national treasure.
Bloody amazing 👏
Was probably my favorite part of the stream, could listen to him talk for hours
WOW!! I can close my eyes and imagine he said this as Gimli in the film to the Fellowship in Moria.
I hope my generation can produce someone to these older actors level. I have been seeing too many excellent performers from my childhood pass over the last 10 years.
I'm not ready for that, not yet
What a treasure. Chills. 🎉❤
This is so awesome, I really wish that this had made the movie cause it’s completely epic and John would have pulled it off so well 😍. So much respect for this man ❤❤
A truly memorable experience, even for a second hearing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
: John Rhys-Davies ......legendary
Legit why isn’t there an audiobook version where each of the actors say their lines?
This is like my greatest wish! How amazing that would be!
Not sure it would happen, given the deaths of some of the actors, but if you could get the remaining ones to do an audiobook of the Lord of the Rings, that be Epic! Ask Nerd of the Rings if he be interested in organizing that project.
That would be beyong amazing. The audiobook by Andy Serkis is already amazing, especially when he gets to do Gollum.
Pure GOLD!
A delight …. Just wonderful.
Amazing! Sir John's voice just casts you away to another world. Bravo!
WOW Listening To A Great Legend Speak This Words Gave Me Goosebumps And Tears At Same Time, I Was Moved ❤
This was beyond words. How utterly excellent.
I remember the one quoted in the BBC’s old radio drama with Ian Holme. I didn’t think I would get a companion people to not only compare but something of wonder in the world today. Thankyou, John Rhys Davies for taking us out of this world for a time to Middle-Earth and Thankyou guys for setting this up and making it possible!
One word only.
EPIC
Magnificent!
Goosebumps... I close my eyes and see Gimli by the fire telling Durin's poem to the rest of the company..
My son, listen close and listen hard for this may just be one of the most surreal readings of Tolkiens creations
до мурашек... Гимли - моё почтение.
Well then. That was awesome! Capturing Mr. Rhys-Davies reading this for prosperity!
Legend for a reason :3
How marvelous
Thank you for this🙏 made me cry in the best way.❤ And thank you John Rys Davies🙏
Love how moments like this connect directly back to Tolkien’s books and writings. Always said that when I went back to the movies filled in what was missing in my imagination.
This is especially poignant as the dwarves had their own magic and loved song and music too. Simply thank you. 🙏
Beautiful
I love that he loves that he’s Gimli.
Bless you Master Gimli. Absolutely Wonderful!!
Man, I have loved watching John Rhys-Davies since I first remember seeing him as a kid in Shōgun, Ivanhoe, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and so on. He is an absolute treasure and I could listen to him read the phone book. Reciting The Song of Durin? Priceless.
What an absolute treat this is. Pure gold. 🏆
Gives me shivers!
Love this.
I really appreciate he gave this gift to all of us thank you !
This gave me goose bumps. How great Durin's Folk were!
I'm so glad to have lived long enough to be able to hear this
the sound of his voice makes me feel homesick for a place i can never go 😢
I'll say it again I want an audiobook of Lord of the Ring read by each actor from the films as their own characters
This is epic. I feel so honored to listen to it.
Nobody else can do that, I’m simply speechless
Absolutely wonderful 💚 tears in my eyes 🥹 loved the whole interview, thanks Matt 🤗
bruh...the CHILLS from the voice he gave gimli
John and the entire cast are precious. Oh, how any subsequent production pales, both in quality and passionate cast.
This gave me chills
His voice is wonderfully melodious!
Simply gorgeous! Love his deep, intense voice!
Amazing.
Goosebumps ❤
(Gimli voice), "YESSSS!"
This was such a great recitation.
John you don't know how many people love ya. It's a lot. Please stay healthy.
He could probably read the ingredients off of a cereal box and it would sound epic.
So enjoyable ❤
I love this world so much! Gimli son of Gloin, thanks for this!
Omg I could cry
This man is a national treasure. I hope the game will make justice for Tolkien's dwarves, since they already got the best of the dwarves in it.
I want this added to an audio book
I love John! I've loved him since princess diaries. Love ya John
I wish he'd do an lotr audiobook, I already have one but if he read it I'd buy it again
I met him in Amsterdam 🙂. He signed my fellowship book. Such a nice man. 🙂
Bless his wonderful heart for doing this!
I already had great respect for Mr. Rhys-Davies, and this only elevates it further
Much has been said, and will forever be said, about the great Sir Lee's enthralling voice.
But he certainly was not the only one in staff capable of compelling words!
Bravo Sir! 👑✨👌
That was simply magical ❤
I just closed my eyes... and was there
What a treasure. Thanks everyone who made this happen! I love settings with melancholy, nostalgic lore, and the Legendarium is right at the top of the list. Really makes me wish that other fantasy settings could get this sort of treatment.
That was moving, I had tears 😁what a performer!
Had to listen three times. Will probably do the same tomorrow. Wow. Just wow.
Wow. that was beautiful. I've got a huge lump in my throat right now.
Thank you so very much for this!
Love this
Thank you for this!!!
Thank you JR-D for this reading. It brings my soul joy.
Thank you so much, this is awesome!
This is amazing..
Some people have perfect voices for narration and his is just that for reading this kind of writing
Thank you, gentlemen, I needed that tonight.
