My fiance and I discussed moving to different states. He mentioned South Carolina. I did some research and fell in love. I settled on moving to Greenville. The only thing stopping me was raising the money to move.
I'm having second thoughts after reading some of the comments from residents who were born and raised there. You have a beautiful state but it's the people that make it feel like home.
Just remember this. You were born and raised in South Carolina but your ancestors came from other countries and settled there.
I live in a tourist town but I welcome anyone who wants to move here as a friend I haven't met yet. You should do the same.

Somethings are obviously different, but the great regentrification that occurred after Hugo in 1989, has greatly improved the area. When I first visited in 1976, it was very rundown, though very affordable. The sad thing (for natives) is that it has lost some of its small town charm, though it is still regularly voted the friendliest city in America! The food scene is drastically improved.

We came to SC in 1981 because of my husband's job & settled in Mt Pleasant. It is now Mt. Unpleasant, trees are cut without thought about the effects, green spaces are disappearing, huge houses are built on small lots so new subdivisions are crammed full- wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys & birds in general have lost their habitats - people complain about deer eating their gardens that used to be the woods where the deer lived. And worse are older black neighborhoods are being destroyed by the greed of builders. The traffic is horrible. A beloved 300 year old live oak- the Meeting Tree was just cut down so a turning lane could be added. If you enjoy heavy traffic, highways getting wider, overbuilding, disregard for the environment. If you enjoy rain, there is flooding in Charleston when it rains -especially during high tide- making it difficult to get to work, this is the place for you. If you like the exciting, keep you on the edge of your seat you will experience during hurricane season & if you like the excitement of a hurricaine that also brings tornadoes, hitting you, - and leaves you without electricity or drinkable water for days along then this is the place for you. You will get a glimpse of beauty and the next day it will be gone. You are more likely to have neighbors from Ohio and to hear a New York accent than to hear the soft, distinct Charleston accent.

We go to Myrtle Beach for Summer Vacation every year since 2015. I must say in just 5 years, I have noticed the amount of housing down there growing tremendously. It is a very long area. North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Murrels Inlet is like 50 miles long. Conway is a popular town which is like 17 miles inland from there. I love all the palm trees every where. I believe it is the most northern city where you can see lots of palm trees. I did notice last year because of the pandemic lots of restaurants were already closed down. Being an area that survives on tourism and summer vacationers, I don't think it would be a good choice for people looking to make a career in the area. However, for retirement, or people who are able to earn a living remotely this would be a great choice. The beaches here are so clean and top notch compared to what I am use to more north.

@@deehope9477 Hi Dee! Rock Hill is a little less expensive and more diverse. Fort Mill is more expensive as there is more northern migration (with northern money) happening there and it is a little closer to Charlotte (just a few interstate exits closer on I-77). Values in Rock Hill are climbing, especially in some of the more recently developed areas but there are definitely some older areas that are undervalued. What do y'all think of Columbia? Got a potential job opp there. Raleigh NC born and raised here, but been living out West for a while now. Spent many memorable times in South Carolina as a child. Looking to tap back into these Carolina roots sometime soon 😎

South Carolina is a very conservative state. If you are not conservative, maybe you should consider moving to North Carolina, more liberals there. Better yet, why don't you stay where you are and change your state by voting out the people that don't like the values our country was founded on.

I'm going to guess before he starts that fort mill is on this list. I wasn't all the way wrong I was close. But you mentioned all of the major cities there. I was born in columbia and could not wait to leave the state when I graduated HS. Now it's almost time to make a plan to get back. Somewhere in between clt and cola off 77 will be my target. The only thing I will say about clt the traffic is a mess 77 N and S can turn into a parking lot making the commute a bit painful.

Charleston is run by a liberal DAMOcrat mayor and has a YES BOSS police chief.
North Charleston is a DAMOcratic war zone.STAY AWAY..
If you own a horse and like the low country look at places like Jedburg,Cottageville,Givans,
      Ridgeville.
Of the four Jedburg is the closest to Summerville which has everything a big city has with a small town feel BUT its growing everyday.
S'ville is not really horse friendly do to the fast growth..
Charleston County has the highest taxes and highest crime.
Berkley County and Dorchester County have a lower crime rate and lower tax rate than Charleston County.

Our #1 priority is walkability of the downtown and being able to walk to the downtown or live in the downtown
#2. Conservative people. We are done with the pontificating liberals up here in Mass. want to be around people where you don’t have to bite your tongue
#3. Crime. We like evening walks.

I aware that there is a Macy’s in Columbia and Greenville. My point was that Macy’s and Bloomingdales are literally the same store. The sign on the one in Columbia used to even read Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s. Rich’s was also the same thing as well, but if I’m not mistaken, the Rich’s stores are all now Macy’s. They’re all three Federated Department Store Corporation though.
The only problem is these locations don’t have as wide a selection as their higher volume stores in cities like Atlanta or NYC.
The Dillard’s stores in these cities do however have the wide selection of goods, brands, and sizes that a Bloomingdales in much larger cities would have.t
