      He wouldn't have gotten past the first rival battle for a long time if he chose Chimchar, because Piplup has growl, which makes you deal less damage, and it also has 100% accuracy, so he was even wrong in saying that he should use Chimchar.

      @@imjustryley2197 I mean, whats better? Spending 3 hours on a turtwig, only to be delayed 8 hours later in the game by grinding up your pokemon? or spending 5 hours on a chimchar and only having to train up like 2 extra hours? Its like saying you can earn 5 million $ now and get 5.000$ every single month for the rest of your life, or earn 1 million$ right now, but earn 50.000$ every single month for the rest of your life. Which would you pick? On the short term, the first option is very appealing, but the second option is by far the best option on long term.

  • @emjer7906
    @emjer7906 Před 3 lety +5920

    I decided to do the math on the odds of beating the first rival battle using chimchar, and the best odds seem to be 1/21065 for chimchar having 4 or more ivs in attack, an attack boosting nature, and getting double crits against a piplup with a negative defense nature using growl, which means an average of about 15000 resets to beat the first rival battle. Assuming each reset takes 10 seconds, that's about 41 hours worth of resetting, which is longer than smallant's entire run, so it doesn't seem like picking chimchar is really any faster than picking turtwig

    • @flallana18

      Crit ignores with defense boost and attack drops so the odd is not as bad as you think

    • @betonamu7514
      @betonamu7514 Před rokem +4

      It’s not as bad as you think. The key is we need to leer until we can crit while needing piplup to growl. The reason for this is the chance for pilup to growl is 1/2, and the chance to crit is 1/16, which means leering into crit kill is always beneficial. We do not care about growl attack drop, since crit ignores attack drop. Since chimchar goes first, the math would be:
      1/2 ^ (# num of lear) * 1/16 * (chance to OHKO)
      Worst case (-atk nature 0 atk iv chimchar and +def nature 31 iv piplup), we need to lear 5 times into crit to have a 30% chance to KO
      (0- Atk Chimchar Scratch vs. -5 0 HP / 0+ Def Piplup on a critical hit: 18-22 (85.7 - 104.7%) - 31.3% chance to OHKO )
      which means piplup has to hit 5 growl so the chance is:
      1/2 ^ 5 * 1/16 * 0.3 = 1/1536
      And this is the WORST case scenario
      The average case should be:
      neutral nature with 15iv each and we need 4 lear into crit:
      0 Atk Chimchar Scratch vs. -4 0 HP / 0 Def Piplup on a critical hit: 22-26 (104.7 - 123.8%) - guaranteed OHKO
      So piplup will growl 4 times
      => clear chance is (1/2)^4 * 1/16 = 1/256 which is not bad at all
      Best case scenario we get a chimchar with 31iv +atk nature and a piplup with 0hp 0def iv -def nature. Now we only need to lear twice to have to KO:
      0+ Atk Chimchar Scratch vs. -2 0 HP / 0 -Def Piplup on a critical hit: 20-24 (100 - 120%) - guaranteed OHKO
      Which means piplup get to roll growl twice. Which brings the math to:
      1/2 * 1/2 * 1/16 = 1/64
      Remember that we can also check the chimchar’s stat so we can reroll for at least neutral nature and average attack iv

  • @Macie-Jay77
    @Macie-Jay77 Před 2 lety +29

    The reason he didn’t use chimchar was because if he did, in the rival battle against piplup, the piplup would have to use growl to not deal damage, which would reduce his chimchars damage, resulting in him needing to hit more and the rival to miss more attacks. The chance of this happening is much lower than just picking turtwig.

Grinding for that complete with restarts and all isnt worth getting chimchar. There are no optimizations you can make other than just getting insanely lucky and resetting over and over again. took him 40 mins of real time for 1/16 odds imagine the time itd take for over 1 in 1000

    • @betonamu7514
      @betonamu7514 Před rokem +1

At least until the speedrun would need to get optimized that much. While you could cut out the requirement of Starly completely with Chimchar, the early part is the most likely for resets, which means more relying on double crits for chimchar.

    Assuming no crits, it'd be a 1/6400 chance to beat Piplup using Chimchar. Assuming you actually do get 2 crits in a row, it's a 1/4 chance. But... that's 2 crits in a row. That's a 1/256 chance. So if you add those together, a 1/1024 chance per reset. Let's give the benefit of the doubt and assume all the in betweens make it a 1/1000 chance to beat Piplup without taking damage. With him showing it took him roughly a minute per reset since he started from scratch, only saving at gyms. This would take a little over 16 hours for 1k attempts. Now THOUGH he did take 40 hours according to his timer, he'd still need to grind his entire team to level 100, and like you said a couple times, his Chimchar would have to be significantly higher leveled than his Turtwig was. Aka the "need to grind less" arguement was just dumb. It saves nothing but him needing to catch Staraptor. On top of that, you basically shit on the run at the end because he doesn't have to worry about higher priority and he doesn't have it to set battle style. Top this off with the fact that you introduced yourself as the best nuzlocker in the world, and I have no clue why I watched through this video, because you come off as EXTREMELY full of yourself constantly, as if you had the willpower to try this yourself. I'm not seeing a no damage run on your channel 8 months later

    He had a 1/16 chance of getting past the very first battle without taking damage with Turtwig, and it took him 40 minutes. He has a 1/1024 chance of getting past the first battle with Chimchar without taking damage, and if we just run a calculation, that would take about 2,560 minutes (42.6 hours roughly). Chimchar would not be worth any time saves later on in the game. It would be interesting to see a Chimchar run, though.
    Edit: Yes, this is probability we’re talking about, so anything could happen. However, that number (which is given to us by Jan) is as accurate of a calculation that we can make right now. Either way it would still most likely take multiple hours. Now, this doesn’t include the chance of crit or other standard Pokémon battle factors in an effort to keep the calculation as simple as possible.

    Love your videos. Can you please review subjectively new Pokémon region and just react to their designs and inspirations. I think it would be really entertaining.

    Yes, Monferno would get Mach punch, assuming it beats the Piplup (who has growl) which would be the same issue as picking Piplup in the first place.

      Growl doesn’t matter if you just get some crits

      @snusmumriken7764 same applies for withdraw and you saw how long he tried with piplup, it would take even longer than that to actually beat the piplup with chimchar

    19:35 To be fair later gens actually give you a lot of nice tools to do this.
    Kanto - you can just sweep through anything. Same with Johto, which is actually kinda easier early on, as you get access to a lot of early priority moves and Pokemon they always give you Pokemon that is SE against the leader.
    Hoenn brings Fake Out, but it also brings Shedinja, which helps with a lot of issues.
    Shedinja also appears in 6th and 8th generation.
    7th Gen can be done using strong priority moves and it's also a generation that brings Psychic Terrain and Psychic Surge, which can be utilised even more in Gens 8 and 9, with Indeedee.
    Kalos has Mega-Kanga, Alola also has Mimikyu. Galar has Eiscue. Most of the later games actually have Sylveon with Pixilate Quick Attack as well. And Bibarel also at some point becomes a Double STAB priority overlord.
    Which pretty much leaves you with Gen 5 and that has Unfezant super early on and that's a solid priority STAB user. Unless you can Dream World Nincada somehow early on as well.
    19:45 Good part about Sturdy - those Pokemon don't really get Priority moves and their spread is limited. Mold Breaker, Skill Link and Parental Bond can also help with that. And obviously multi-hit moves are standard ever since gen 1.

    it would've taken him fucking ages if he started with chimchar since growl lowers your attack, and crits are not very fuckin consistent
