I'm convinced the reason Onix sucks so badly is so that Brock could have an intimidating-looking Pokémon for his gym battle without hitting the players too badly
Isn’t onyx the Pokémon with worth base attack then oddish
@@ShinyUmbreon106 Yes. Worse than Oddish, Vanillite, Piplup, and more!

Onix is actually hilarious. 12 foot giant rock snake - less attack than a caterpillar.
It’s not lower then the caterpillar but it is weaker then a weed
I like to think that the speed and attack of Onix was switched accidentally by the devs while in development because it's surprisingly fast
@@mikemyers3079 70 attack wouldn’t be bad especially for a non fully evolved Pokémon

Yes but before Generation 2, Waterfall used to be the signature move of the Seaking line. When Gold and Silver were released, Waterfall became an HM and even to this day, only Goldeen and Seaking learn the move by level up.

Sableye: "has no weakness". But with half the defensive ability of most pokemon, it is basically weak to everything.
Even as a kid, I knew he was bad. But I always wanted him to be good cuz he has such a cool design
I mean immunity to normal is amazing, and it's one of the few available ghost types early game, when normal moves are the most common.
@@owenaspinall2046 Sure. My comment is about its competitive use ;).
@@tiemen9095 Sableye is way more viable in the official competitive Pokemon format (VGC) than in casual play. Prankster with access to fake out, trick, quash, will-o-wisp, helping hand and foul play makes it a decent support pokemon. Only in singles format it's pretty much useless.
@@seeibe okay, I honestly don't know much about competitive pokemon beyond gen 3, when it didn't have prankster yet ;)
I believe the reason Onix's attack is so pathetically low is due to the development of gen 1. The game's link cable battles were implemented late in development, so the game was designed with only the story in mind, and Onix was meant to be a "boss" of sorts you encounter early, meant to be imposing, but beatable as it would be attacking the likes of Squirtle and Bulbasaur, so its stats reflected that, with its defense being high to encourage players to level up and use special attacks rather than relying on stuff like Scratch and Tackle. Sadly, its stats were never redone after gen 1, so it may as well just be a faster baby Steelix now.
This. Mewtwo and mew were added late too. As were trade evos (unfortunately).
Not sure why they decided to give it to give two of them to bruno though.
They can easily fix it with some regional variant with less def and more atk. Balance it out.
@@Tassooow an ice or fire onix would be so fun! Especially Ice is great vs dragon types.
I imagine both to have high defence, low special defence, high special attack, low attack.
@@SirThomezz sadly, a bulky ice type variant would likely be terrible. Ice is the quintessential glass cannon type, with its only resistance being to other ice moves. Having a defensive ice type pokemon is like having a shield made of styrofoam, and defense is the only thing onix is good for.
It's insane how beginner friendly Gen 3 romhacking is. I hacked a new room into Mt. Pyre as a cemetery for my Emerald nuzlocke Let's Play when I was a teenager, and it was ridiculously easy with all the tools the community has made.
Yeah the tools are pretty self explanatory considering what it is you’re doing. I wonder if we made a rom hack specifically for Jan if we could get him to play it.
i’m sorry but “ADOPT DONT SHOP!!” in front of the daycare is so funny to me 😭
Funny to see two of the three "trash" starters being essential encounters for EK
Seaking and Magcargo Respectively 😎
@@sedogaming5756 Sorry to burst your bubblebeam... It's actually Sunflora and Magcargo...
I feel like you should make a version of this for FireRed. That game not only needed new spicy encounters, but some more mons not from the region. Also doesn't help to be pretty easy to Nuzlocke.

This has to be done with gen 5. Id imagine how fun it could be
That makes you wonder, what gen 5 mons are trash? Hell, I just got done with a black 2 playthrough where I swept Caitlin with a underleveled watchog
iirc there is a trashlocke for Black and White, jan streamed it a while ago, im not sure who made it though
I actually kind of hope we get this. Although I doubt we will, considering it'd take way time to trim down and pick out the 'good' Pokémon.
@@CardGameAcolyte Purrloin is pure garbage, it can't even farm properly cuz it just tickles wild pokemon
This is actually good for using Pokémon that you never used
"When Ditto transforms into Onix, its attack gets lowered" is a line from FlygonHG's video on Onix sucking that summed it up to me the best.
I subscribe to the theory that the devs accidentally switched Onix's Attack and Speed around.
The hoppip line is actually decent in a playthrough
And damn is it annoying in Gen 4 Random Battles in Pokemon Showdown

Counterpoint:
Watch Pikaspreys "Smeargle Only" runs
@@maguc5906 I mean if you only have a team of a single utility pokemon of course that's gonna be bad. Seems like a weak counterpoint
I think that the problem is actually getting the utility moves, because you can only copy moves from your opponents. Also you can get 1 move every 10 levels
Smeargle's utility is entirely dependent on what Pokemon you run into when it has Sketch, and what moves they decide to use. It's incredibly difficult to get Smeargle into a position where its limitless utility potential actually gets to be realized.

Though to be honest, both original comment and the first reply seem fine, they're valid points, just different. Don't think you needed to interject though.
I am actually amazed at the amount of effort you put into this content; most pokemon challenge videos are quite lazy rehashes of the same formula, but this is actually really creative and required an insane amount of planning and community input.

Same problem as Sableye. I love its design, but holy shit.
I've actually seen someone bring Ledian to the endgame before in a nuzlocke comic, so like in spite of its reputation apparently it can do SOMETHING. We just need to find out what exactly because that's a breakthrough and a half.
@@twofortiel Sableye is actually good for exactly 3 gyms, that being Brawly who can't touch it, Norman who can only hit it with non-stab special faint attacks and get Slaking walled by detect, and Tate and Liza who have 2 mons with only psychic and Sableye gets stab physical shadow ball.
