Japanese Scenic Train Ride Experience in Kyoto ★ ONLY in JAPAN

- Japanese trains are famous around the world for their style, comfort and speed. In the countryside of Kyoto though, you may not have speed, but you do comfort and style. The Eizan Electric Railway starting at Demachiyanagi Station is a 94 year old line that is evolving fast. Since commuters are decreasing, Keihan Railways has changed the way it designs its trains to attract more tourists.
The plan is working and the Eizan Line is super cool.
The trains are all “One man” one person operated trains where the driver is also the conductor, taking tickets and payment before letting passengers off. They’re the ultimate multitaskers!
In September 2018, a strong typhoon damaged a lot of the Kansai region including Kyoto and the Eizan Line suffered heavy damage. The line was suspended for 90 days, the longest in its history. What’s impressive is that the entire company pitched in to help from the technical staff and construction to the office workers at headquarters. It’s a great example of teamwork in Japan and a reason why the Eizan line is so beloved.
There are many interesting stops on the Eizan line worth checking out.

★ DEMACHIYANAGI STATION
The first station with change to the Keihan Line express for Osaka and Kiyomizudera, Gion, Central Kyoto
★ ICHIJOJI STATION
It’s known as Kyoto’s Ramen Town! There are 36 shops serving some of the city’s best!
★ KURAMA STATION
You can hike around Mount Kurama and Kurama Temple or head to Kurama Onsen for a dip in the closest hot spring to Kyoto city. It takes 40 minutes to reach Kurama from central Kyoto.

Keihan Railways sells tourist passes for 1500 yen ($14.00) from Kyoto Tower. It’s also sold in Osaka at the airport and in town.
For foreign residents of Japan like me, there’s a 1-day train pass for the Eizan line for 1000 yen ($9.50) that lets you jump on and off. You can get this pass at Demachiyanagi Station.

Proving once again that John & Only in Japan is the best "ワンマン” show on CZcams! NHK's "Japan Railway Journal" better watch out! But seriously, it is fun to see videos on rail passes other than the JR Pass. Japan has MANY of these regional tickets. One could dedicate a series to exploring these regional passes. Additionally, tourists can get these passes at a great discount without the need to pre-purchase. (The JR pass must be purchased before leaving to Japan and it's quite expensive.) These regional passes often come in 1, 2 and 3 day unlimited travel varieties and can can be purchased at the station after showing your passport.

@@lostinhorizon8341 Was that made permanent? I heard it was part of a trial that was ending this month. Also I believe it was sonly available for the main "JR Rail Pass" and not the regional passes for areas like JR East, JR Kansai or JR Hokkaido.

I took this train to go to Kurama Onsen without knowing the beauty of it beforehand. It really has a Ghibli atmosphere to it and I strongly advise you to take it especially for the Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi fans.

Nice video. I lived in Japan for 15 years and then started my own tour company called hikari-partners. I take JR pass and ride all types of trains. My clients love it. It is the only company in india who only travels to Japan.

I actually bought those passes for the Keihan line when we traveled to Osaka and Kyoto earlier this year. It came in handy as our accommodations were near Kiyomizu-Gojo station. After i bought those passes i found out they have a "Premium Car" which has reserved seating and an attendant tending to passengers. It was not very expensive to upgrade, just maybe 600 yen along with our passes. It made for a nice comfortable ride from Yodoyabashi station in Osaka to Kiyomizu-Gojo station in Kyoto. I was dreading boarding a crowded local train and having to deal with luggage. The attendant even stored our luggage for us and as we got off at our stop, he wrote a note to let us know where to find an elevator in the station so we wouldnt have to climb the stairs with our luggage! Such service! After watching this video, I wished we had ventured further up along the Keihan line past Demachiyanagi on the Eizan! On my to do list next time! Thanks for the great video!

It's amazing that no matter where you go, it's so clean and neat in Japan and there is no garbage or gum or spits on the ground. Being there is truly like being in a different world.
What a beautiful train ride, I nearly went on this train, but I did not have time. I only had two weeks in Japan, so I packed all the popular sites together. This is such a fantastic video production and a beautiful flow to each scene, just like the Japanese countryside.
Japanese have a way of performing the most routine mundane tasks extremely efficiently without looking or sounding the least bit bored

I've been to Kyoto a few times and I've always loved taking this train. However, this was usually just to visit my friend's house several stations down the line. Thanks for alerting me to the other possibilities the Eizan line has to offer shortly before my next trip to Japan!

I love trains, so I really enjoyed this video. And the momiji illuminated by the lights was stunning; I want to see this in person. Indeed, you’ve shown us so many wonderful places to visit in Japan, but, sadly, finding the time and money to see them is a challenge.

Japanese trains are the best in the world and so are its passengers. When I first went to Japan in 1998 I was shocked 😲 how clean, efficient and reasonable the train 🚉 service was. Even if the whole train was empty apart from 1 person that 1 person would only take up the space of 1 seat, not 2,3,4,5,6, like in London. Sorry London but it's true. Plus you don't have any passengers eating, drinking, talking loudly on the phone, no feet on the seats etc etc. I never get tired of looking at the hundreds of adverts in the train. ✌️

This is one of the best japan centered channels on youtube. If I made videos, Id do a whole series on Japanese cinema. Small retro theaters hand paint billboards over their theaters for a single movie that plays for about a week. They are similar to morioka shoten's single book bookshop.

Been following and watching ONLY in JAPAN since November '18. All i want to do now is to visit Japan, honestly the one country on the top of my list, and my Japanese is basically non excistent. However, John has tought me that i really dont need to know Japanese to find my way around Japan :)

This is a really cool video. I was in Kyoto in 2017 and stayed at a cool Onsen Ryokan in Kyoto Ohara. Beautiful views and gorgeous temples. I could have stayed there forever :). Your video reminded me a lot of my time in Kyoto.
Which spots did you like in Ohara itself? I'm a big Kyoto fan, but have yet to go to Ohara. Any favourite spots, shops, and so on?
@@picknick21 So we stayed in Ohara no Sato Onsen which was a really cool place and we visited the Sanzen-in Temple. Unfortunately we were only in kyoto for 3 days and we used most of that time to explore Kyoto itself.

Wow, this type of ticketing is very similar to the buses. Ahh, I like these videos, this demonstrates that there are private rails in Japan. The themed trains are always great to see..this can tie into mascot, or a magical rail experience. Keihan is a private rail company. Oooh mame mochi, nice snack! What a nice way to end trips with soaking in a Japanese spring.

Sightseeing kurama-dera and hiei-yama during autumn is the best view ever. I went there during by bycicle. It was tiring because the route is going uphill.

This is like the cute train in Arashiyama, though I think that is more crowded because of bamboo forest.

Ah - there's something very satisfying in looking at train driver's work in Japan. And for some reason I feel uneasy when I hear those 'bells' at crossroads with train tracks.

Hey I was there last week and drove to Kibuneguchi Station and then hiked to Kurama Onsen with two friends.
Some thoughts from my side:
- If you want one of the scenic seats you should plan to wait around 15 minutes. The trains drive in 15 minute intervals, so let the full train drive off and a few minutes later the next one comes around and waits to depart, so you can grab your good seat.
- If you exit the station before Kurama and do not take the bus to Kibuneguchi you have to walk the road, which is too bad, because I felt there could be enough space for a walkway..
- The hike is rather short, but going up the mountain is still nice and fun. But as John said, there has been a LOT of damage due to the Taifun, but it is save to walk anyway. And you can take a pilgram walking stick for free. You just have to return it at the exit.
- The Onsen has a machine with English Buttons and offers towels to if you forget. And a shuttle service to Kurama Station for the lazy. Just ask the driver, he is very nice.
People do meditation to get peace, I watch Only in Japan...

Fantastic video! I was in Kyoto in January and rode this line, but not as far out as you did. It's a beautiful line for sure and I truly enjoyed my time on it. I'd like to go back in fall and ride it out till the end.

I was lucky enough to go to the Kurama fire festival many years ago. I don't remember much about the train trip except for the crowd. The line started outside the station went all the way through the station back outside and doubled back to the platform. Totally worth it. But I didn't see much more of Kurama than the festival at night. I would like to go back during the day time and spend some time there. Plus who doesn't like a nice train ride. :D
