Watch this video to see what it’s like onboard the Train Suite Shiki-Shima across Japan! On our journey through massive urban centers, passed breathtaking mountains, and over peaceful rivers. We’ll cover nearly 550 miles over almost 31 hours!
The Shiki-Shima Train should be at the top of your travel bucket list. In this video, we’ll leave Tokyo at 9:15 and travel across Japan to return, the next evening, to our starting point: Ueno Station in Tokyo. Along the way, we’ll travel in a First Class train car with every amenity you can imagine (and some First Class Luxuries to surprise you!).
Onboard the Shiki-Shima First Class Train experience, we’ll have our own dedicated Team to take care of our every need, two INSANELY comfortable beds and Michelin Star Quality food.
Our room is in the “entry level” type, but you’d never know it! It’s got every amenity you can imagine!

I think the fact that it's a round trip and ONLY two days makes it a bit too excessive for me. I can't stomach the idea of paying that much only to end up right back where I started 48 hours later.
Now if it was like 96 to 128 hours total. Absolutely worth it that way.

Amtrak: "You're lucky you're only arriving 2 days late, shut it"
If a daily train is delayed by 30 seconds, you get a letter explaining to your employer why you were late
Japanese hospitality at its finest
According to Japanese Rail..., a 1-minute delay is considered "unacceptable"
In 2018, Japan Railways sent out an apology due to a Shinkansen leaving 25 seconds early
The operator was misinformed about the time to leave, and so he closed the doors. When he realized the mistake he decided to leave early as opening then closing the doors would take longer than 25 seconds and they'd be late (and no one was on the platform)
But as pointed by a few people, with the trains being so specific, someone might of planned to make the train at this particular time but missed it

One thing I noticed is that the driver points at every signal he looks at, as I understand it this is part of training to add muscle memory to taking note of everything you need to watch for.
It's also used to stop fatigue trying to keep the driver awake
I'm a train attendant aboard Amtrak(Southwest Chief) & this would be my fantasy train to work. If only we could have this type of train travel in the USA. The detail of the product presentation is other worldly.

Amtrak trains are notorious for delays from what I've experienced riding in the past. More people would ride if they ran those cars on time.

@fackafacka 18 billion people could, by riding it multiple times. It's not just one visit per person, but surely many.

Let’s say you rode the train to and from work, that’s counted as two passengers, then you do that 5 times a week and you’re up to 10, times that by 48 weeks (assuming 4 weeks annual leave) and then you’re up to 480.
Times that by the population of Japan (125million, and you get to 60billion).
Obviously not everyone rides the trains that often, but even if it’s only one in five, that gets you to your supposedly impossible 18 billion.
The Rocky Mountaineer doesn't have quite the level of on-board luxury, but the views certainly beat it, at a lower price point
There used to be "The American Orient Express", which was pretty much the same concept, and one of the coolest aspects was they had managed to acquire historic cars from famously luxurious trains of the past to be the train cars, like the Santa Fe's Super Chief and New York Central's 20th Century Limited. Sadly it didn't take off. They tried to partner with Amtrak, but that only put it on borrowed time. The cars were auctioned off and the train is no more.

Imagine that you are there. Go to sleep every night as though you are in Japan , FEEL the joy and the appreciation for being already there and fall asleep in this feeling. See your now place where you live FROM there in your imagination. If you walk in this FEELING all the time, see yourself there, hearing in your imagination people who speak Japanese., their houses,....conditions will be created by Devine power and you will go there. You don't have to think how, when, etc.( you can't think how and when if you ARE already there. It is a shift in your mind.) Just live as though you are there. What you need to do from your part, you will do under compulsion.

Jeb and Suzzane, as a fan of Japanese trains since I was 6 years old, I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time watching this video! As awesome as Train Suite Shikishima is, but Japanese trains delight no matter what kind you're riding. What I love best is their uniqueness, the whole experience of using them, the scenery that passes by the window and the unmatched enthusiasm the Japanese people share about trains. It's amazing when you're waved off by the staff at the station, everyone is taking pictures on the platform and the staff are very accommodating to us railfans. I just came back from a 2-week holiday to Japan and I already want to go back. I'm so glad you enjoyed your journey and thanks so much for taking us along for the ride!
I worked for a Japanese company for years and travelled there often. I did a variety of excursions throughout the country. I don't think I could have justified this trip in my mind, even back then when I was discovering and loving the country. That's a lot of money. But, it is beautiful. And if I paid that price I would have been awake for the entire 36 hours.... some how. Regardless I love this channel, and wish you guys the absolute best in this new year.

What a beautiful train trip. I've never seen such a fancy train is that nor their passengers being treated as good as they did. Such beautiful scenery, my granddaughter actually would love to go and do that she loves the japanese. She reads rights and speaks Japanese.. I agree with one of the comments that Jeb Brooks is the best travel CZcams guide. In fact I only watch him now.

Of all the trains you've been on, this has to be the top of the line. The ticket cost is way (way, way) out of my price range so thanks for letting me ride along with you. I was looking forward to this review ever since the teaser to get your perspective. There are not really ANY reviews of the Shiki-shima experience.
My wife and I was able to ride this train in December for a 2N/3D Trip to Aomori/Akita/Matsushima. You covered the experience really well, so I only want share some of my anecdotes. We are in our 30's.
Like you, we were the only foreign couple (sort of, I'm half-Japanese, half-Caucasian), my Caucasian wife speaks very little Japanese. I was expecting to translate everything, however this was not the case. Though I can speak Japanese fluently, when my wife was present they spoke in English to ensure my wife was included. Were your announcements also done in English? Our announcements were also done in English, but they also included additional descriptions of the areas that we passed through (whether it be castle ruins/famous location). We all knew those English announcements were done "just" for us 😆
Additional notes as a foreign traveler:
- Every excursion, we were provided English brochures without asking (I was given both languages).
- Every menu was provided additionally in English, and customized for my wife, who also like you, has an allergy. We never had to mention her allergy. They were are all aware of it.
- On the bus, we had dedicated staff sit near us *if* I needed help translating for my wife or if I had any questions about the excursions (I had several)
The details were incredible, it is difficult to document everything. Every chef came to us to greet us, and really made us feel special. When my wife complimented the food and joked about getting additional pieces. They brought her more.
By far the most memorable is - the staff. Each staff member knew our names and made an effort to converse with us. The trip is really dense and intimate so we often had conversations with many of the crew members. Some staff even remembered some of the answers to the questionnaire we answered after we were accepted applicants. I could type a novel on how great the staff was. At the end of the journey, we wanted to get a quick picture with some of the staff that had helped us; not only did we get that picture - the entire 40+ staff members took a group photo with us in the center. This was incredible and we will never forget it.
I would have brought pitchforks on behalf of the Shiki-shima crew if anything negative came out of your review🤣
P.S. It took us 4x before we finally got accepted.

Actually there are a few in Japanese, but unfortunately, none (that I know) have English subtitles. This is the first review of Shikishima in English. (There was a Japan Railway Journal segment, but I don't count that as a review).

Jeb, thanks for introducing us to your lovely wife Suzanne. I have to admire her spirit in recovering from a root canal so quickly, en-venture. Seeing this train is a surprise since I never thought something like that was possible.
I have to admit another massive dose of respect for you; since traveling to Antarctica and now this Japanese luxury train. You have given me recollection of one of my unique experiences of visiting and traveling by rail in Japan in the mid 1990s. I visited Fusa, and some small mountain towns in the opposite direction to Tokyo.
The entire journey appeared to be nothing short of amazing. In addition to bringing us along on the journey, I appreciate how you encourage us to decide for ourselves if such an experience is worth it. That is true with so many life experiences. Rather than trying to convince everyone to do exactly what you are doing, you instead share your experiences and then inform others how to learn more details should they wish. It is then up to us to inquire. Thank you.

nobody, but nobody does railroading like Japan.. There are lots and lots of luxury and tourist trains all over the country. not to mention the regional, commuter, and monorail lines. The Tokyo station is just gorgeous!
I was expecting something stupid like $10,000 for a ticket !!! That price is amazing for the experience ! This is cheaper than flying business class !

I used to live near Tokyo. I was waiting for my local train when this one approached. I was confused by it. It's beautiful, but it also looked so out of place. Some people in the lounge waved as they passed by. I thought, "they must be filthy rich" 😅 Now I know what it looks like inside. Thank you for allowing us to see the experience!

The popularity of air travel during the 60's was really the death knell for US rail travel. Each railroad had their premier passenger trains. Ex: Atlantic Coast Line had The Champion, Seaboard Air Line had The Silver Meteor, Southern Railway had The Crescent, and Norfolk & Western had The Powhatan Arrow. By the late 60's the railroads were losing money on each passenger train they operated. Amtrak would assume nearly all passenger traffic, and equipment in 1971. The Carter deregulation era saw the abandonment of many rail lines nationwide. By the 2000's, several trains were combined with others or abolished altogether. Brightline seems to be proving very successful in Florida. Hopefully, that service could eventually expand across the country.

I grew up along the Illinois Central Line. My hometown had a roundhouse for the NY Central which intersected the IC about two miles from my house. Ours was one of the old Midwest railroad cities. Your videos have reawakened my love of the rails. Thank you.

Haha right? Every ryokan in Japan always has a safe since they go into your room to lay out the bedding etc. while you’re at dinner, but I’ve never once thought of using it.

I believe you could honestly say the Shiki-Shima is the QM2 of Japan. The forward observation cars would be a railfan's dream here in the US! Aside from the Rocky Mountaineer, it's truly unfortunate we don't have this type of classy service here.
I think it would be a good idea to research services in other countries and absorb what you think are good.

I have so many comments as I love your video's. I am UK based. I know this is late, but years ago I was visiting my sister in France when I had a tooth problem. Yep root canal problem. The correction and announcement of the time delay brought back memories. The idea of being late seems natural/almost expected to westerners. That was something I couldn’t get used to while living in Japan. The Amagasaki derailment occurred because the driver was running 90 seconds behind schedule and he had to make the time up somehow so was driving way too fast.
Thank you for taking us with you on this amazing journey! I love watching your videos from home here in southern Germany all the time! They are so inspiring for future journeys as well, although this one might have to wait untill I finished my master's :D Best wishes from Germany and keep up the amazing work!

One of the Japanese CZcamsrs did the winter tour. He had room 901, and took his mom, lucky mom. What an amazing train.
Can't wait to see other CZcamsrs adventures on this train.

I was hoping for you to ride either this train or one of the more conventional, but still very stylish express trains like the Odakyu Romancecar. I think Japan incorporates creative styling into trains like no other country. Some of the designs are a little jarring to be honest, but they experiment and apply variety in a way that I can only respect. Your presentation was great as usual!
